Development of the abdominal musculature in the chicken embryo.

The abdominal musculature is of prime importance for stabilization and flexion movements of the trunk, and of high clinical relevance in hernia surgery. Despite a number of severe congenital malformations involving defective abdominal muscle formation, little is known about abdominal muscle development during embryogenesis. Here, we used the chicken model system to investigate anatomy, morphogenesis, segmental origin, and fiber formation of the abdominal musculature. The specific anatomy of the chicken abdominal musculature was first determined by macroscopic dissections of adult specimens. We

Insulin resistance and PCOS: chicken or egg?

PCOS is a common and heterogeneous endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, frequently associated with metabolic abnormalities. It was estimated that about 75% of these subjects have an impairment of insulin action, as measured by gold standard methods. While the relationship between insulin resistance and PCOS is consistently shown by a number of studies, the mechanisms underlying its primary origin still remains an unsolved issue. Insulin resistance and the associated hyperinsulinemia can induce both the endocrine and reproductive traits of PCOS. However, androgen excess, in turn, ca

Fibrosis and secondary lymphedema: chicken or egg?

Secondary lymphedema is a common complication of cancer treatment resulting in progressive fibroadipose tissue deposition, increased risk of infections, and, in rare cases, secondary malignancies. Until recently, the pathophysiology of secondary lymphedema was thought to be related to impaired collateral lymphatic formation after surgical injury. However, more recent studies have shown that chronic inflammation-induced fibrosis plays a key role in the pathophysiology of this disease. In this review, we will discuss the evidence supporting this hypothesis and summarize recent publications demon

Genetical Genomics of Tonic Immobility in the Chicken.

Identifying the molecular mechanisms of animal behaviour is an enduring goal for researchers. Gaining insight into these mechanisms enables us to gain a greater understanding of behaviour and their genetic control. In this paper, we perform Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping of tonic immobility behaviour in an advanced intercross line between wild and domestic chickens. Genes located within the QTL interval were further investigated using global expression QTL (eQTL) mapping from hypothalamus tissue, as well as causality analysis. This identified five candidate genes, with the genes PRDX4 a…

Gonadal and Endocrine Analysis of a Gynandromorphic Chicken.

Birds have a ZZ male and ZW female sex chromosome system. The relative roles of genetics and hormones in regulating avian sexual development have been revealed by studies on gynandromorphs. Gynandromorphs are rare bilateral sex chimeras, male on one side of the body and female on the other. We examined a naturally occurring gynandromorphic chicken that was externally male on the right side of the body and female on the left. The bird was diploid but with a mix of ZZ and ZW cells that correlated with the asymmetric sexual phenotype. The male side was 96% ZZ, and the female side was 77% ZZ and 2

In Ovo Electroporation in the Chicken Auditory Brainstem.

Electroporation is a method that introduces genes of interest into biologically relevant organisms like the chicken embryo. It is long established that the chicken embryo is an effective research model for studying basic biological functions of auditory system development. More recently, the chicken embryo has become particularly valuable in studying gene expression, regulation and function associated with hearing. In ovo electroporation can be used to target auditory brainstem regions responsible for highly specialized auditory functions. These regions include the chicken nucleus magnocellula

Lack of oblique astigmatism in the chicken eye.

Primate eyes display considerable oblique off-axis astigmatism which could provide information on the sign of defocus that is needed for emmetropization. The pattern of peripheral astigmatism is not known in the chicken eye, a common model of myopia. Peripheral astigmatism was mapped out over the horizontal visual field in three chickens, 43 days old, and in three near emmetropic human subjects, average age 34.7years, using infrared photoretinoscopy. There were no differences in astigmatism between humans and chickens in the central visual field (chicks -0.35D, humans -0.65D, n.s.) but large d…

Isolation and culture of primary chicken osteoclasts.

Osteoclasts originate from hematopoietic myeloid progenitors that differentiate into specialized multinucleated cells uniquely capable of resorbing bone in both physiological and pathological conditions. Osteoclast numbers and degradative activities increase in various inflammatory disorders of bone and certain bone oncologies, thereby causing bone loss that may weaken the skeleton, increase fracture incidence, and disturb marrow function. Many valuable insights have been obtained through the use of osteoclasts directly isolated from the bones of chickens fed a low calcium diet to enhance oste…

Characterization and expression of chicken selenoprotein W.

As an essential trace element, selenium (Se) deficiency results in White Muscle Disease in livestock and Keshan disease in humans. The main … NA expression is high in skeletal muscle followed by brain, but extremely low in other tissues from chickens fed a commercial maize-based diet. The SeW gene is ubiquitously expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, brain, testis, spleen, kidney, lung, liver, stomach and pancreas in chickens fed a commercial diet supplemented with sodium selenite. These results …

Haemorrhagic bullae associated with a chicken scratch.

Complicated skin and soft tissue infection caused by a chicken scratch has rarely been reported. A 3-year-old boy who developed haemorrhagic bullae and necrotising fasciitis following a chicken scratch is reported. Morganella morganii and enterococci were cultured from the aspirate. He received antimicrobial treatment, surgical debridement and a skin graft, and recovered uneventfully.

Gentamicin pharmacokinetics in the chicken inner ear.

Avians have the unique ability to regenerate cochlear hair cells that are lost due to ototoxins or excessive noise. Many methodological techniques are available to damage the hair cells for subsequent scientific study. A recent method utilizes topical application of an ototoxic drug to the round window membrane. The current study examines the pharmacokinetics of gentamicin in the inner ear of chickens following topical application to the round window membrane or a single systemic high dose given intraperitoneally. Chickens were given gentamicin topically or systemically and survived for 1, 4, …

Craniofacial development in the talpid3 chicken mutant.

The talpid(3) chicken mutant has a pleiotropic phenotype including polydactyly and craniofacial abnormalities. Limb polydactyly in talpid(3) suggests a gain of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, whereas, paradoxically, absence of midline facial structures suggests a loss of Hh function. Here we analyze the status of Shh signaling in the talpid(3) mutant head. We show that Shh expression domains are lost from the talpid(3) head--in hindbrain, midbrain, zona limitans intrathalamica, and stomodeal ectoderm--and that direct targets of Hedgehog signaling, Ptc1, Ptc2, and Gli1, are also absent even in areas a

[Angioedema due to sensitization to chicken meat].

BACKGROUND: Egg is the most frequent cause of food allergy in children. The bird-egg syndrome, found in a group of patients sensitized to egg through bird proteins, was infrequent in children. We report a patient with former history of hypersensitivity to egg who developed episodes of angioedema after ingestion of hen meat. METHODS: Prick testing with egg and their different antigenic protein fractions, alpha-livetin and chicken meat was performed. Antigens of hen meat were used for the skin prick test and prick-by-prick. Serum-specific IgE was identified with use of the CAP techniques and SD

Adrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the chicken pancreas.

The distribution, as well as the morphological characteristics of adrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibres was studied in the pancreas of the hen and the cock. The presence of numerous adrenergic and moderately numerous cholinergic structures was revealed in the organ. They were seen as nerve fibre bundles or single nerve fibres located in the vicinity of blood vessels and exocrine ducts, as well as the cells of the exocrine and endocrine pancreas. Single TH- and ChAT-positive nerve cell bodies were also found in the organ under study.

Brainstem connections of the macula lagenae in the chicken.

The macula lagenae, an otolithic hair-cell organ with probable vestibular function, lies close to the apical end of the avian auditory hair-cell epithelium, the papilla basilaris. In an earlier study in the pigeon in which lesioning techniques were used, Boord and Rasmussen ([1963] J. Comp. Neurol. 120:463-473) reported finding a projection of lagenar fibers to parts of the cochlear nuclei (nucleus magnocellularis and nucleus angularis). Subsequent to this report, it has been generally assumed that at least part of the cochlear nuclei has a vestibular or a combined vestibular-auditory function

Pinopsin is a chicken pineal photoreceptive molecule.

In avian pinealocytes, an environmental light signal resets the phase of the endogenous circadian pacemaker that controls the rhythmic production of melatonin. Investigation of the pineal phototransduction pathway should therefore reveal the molecular mechanism of the biological clock. The presence of rhodopsin-like photoreceptive pigment, transducin-like immunoreaction, and cyclic GMP-dependent cation-channel activity in the avian pinealocytes suggests that there is a similarity between retinal rod cells and pinealocytes in the phototransduction pathway. We have now cloned chicken pineal cDNA
