Adherence to 24-h movement guidelines among Chinese children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Meeting 24-h movement guidelines for children and adolescents has been associated with improved health indicators. However, the literature examining adherence to 24-h movement guidelines among Chinese children and adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) remains lacking. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines and its socio-demographic correlates for this population. METHODS: The sample includes 319 Chinese students with ID. Accelerometers are used to measure moderate-to-vigorous physical activity time and sleep duration. Question

Effects of Social Isolation and Loneliness in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Loneliness and social isolation have negative consequences on physical and mental health in both adult and pediatric populations. Children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) are often excluded and experience more loneliness than their typically developing peers. This scoping review aims to identify the type of studies conducted in children with NDD to determine the effects of loneliness and/or social isolation. Three electronic databases (Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO) were searched from inception until 5 February 2019. Two independent reviewers screened the citations for inclusion a

Examining the Role of Language in Play Among Children With and Without Developmental Disabilities.

Purpose Play is a critical aspect of children's development, and researchers have long argued that symbolic deficits in play may be diagnostic of developmental disabilities. This study examined whether deficits in play emerge as a function of developmental disabilities and whether our perceptions of play are colored by differences in language and behavioral presentations. Method Ninety-three children participated in this study (typically developing [TD]; n = 23, developmental language disorders [DLD]; n = 24, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]; n = 26, and autism spectrum disorder

Teaching early reading skills to children with severe intellectual disabilities using Headsprout Early Reading.

BACKGROUND: Beginning reading skills are often taught using phonics. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of phonics with typically developing students, but less research has evaluated this method with students with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: This paper evaluated the computerized phonics-based intervention Headsprout Early Reading® with eight students aged 7-19 years with severe intellectual disability. Six children were verbal, two were non-verbal. Four students completed Headsprout as it was designed for typically developing children, and four students accessed two adapted ve

Risk of exposure to air pollution among British children with and without intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to outdoor air pollution is a well-established risk factor for a range of adverse health conditions. No previous study has quantified the extent to which children with intellectual disability (ID) may be exposed to outdoor air pollution. METHODS: Secondary analysis of data extracted from the UK's Millennium Cohort Study, a nationally representative sample of over 18 000 UK children born 2000-2002. RESULTS: Averaging across ages, children with IDs were 33% more likely to live in areas with high levels of diesel particulate matter, 30% more likely to live in areas with hig

Effect of Working Memory Updating Training on Retrieving Symptoms of Children With Learning Disabilities.

Working memory (WM) deficiency is a primary reason for the poor academic performance of children with learning disabilities (LDs). Studies have shown that the WM of typical children could be improved through training, and WM training contributes to improving their fluid intelligence and academic achievement. However, few studies have investigated WM training for children with LDs, and results have been inconsistent. The present study examined the long-term effects of WM updating training and whether it can mitigate LD symptoms. Fifty-four children with LDs were recruited and divided randomly i

Does therapeutic electrical stimulation improve function in children with disabilities? A comprehensive literature review.

The use of therapeutic electrical stimulation for medical purposes is not new; it has been described in medical textbooks since the 18th century, but its use has been limited due to concerns for tolerance and lack of research showing efficacy. The purpose of this review is to discuss the potential clinical applicability, while clarifying the differences in electrical stimulation (ES) treatments and the theory behind potential benefits to remediate functional impairments in youth. The literature review was performed as follows: A total of 37 articles were reviewed and the evidence for use in ped

Syntactic Awareness and Arithmetic Word Problem Solving in Children With and Without Learning Disabilities.

Arithmetic word problem (AWP) solving is a highly demanding task for children with learning disabilities (LD) since verbal and mathematical information have to be integrated. This study examines specifically how syntactic awareness (SA), the ability to manage the grammatical structures of language, affects AWP solving. Three groups of children in elementary education were formed: children with arithmetic learning disabilities (ALD), children with reading learning disabilities (RLD), and children with comorbid arithmetic and reading learning disabilities (ARLD). Mediation analysis confirmed tha

Magnitude Representation and Working Memory Updating in Children With Arithmetic and Reading Comprehension Disabilities.

It has been argued that children with learning disabilities (LD) encounter severe problems in working memory (WM) tasks, especially when they need to update information stored in their WM. It is not clear, however, to what extent this is due to a generally poor updating ability or to a difficulty specific to the domain to be processed. To examine this issue, two groups of children with arithmetic or reading comprehension LD and a group of typically developing children (9 to 10 years old) were assessed using two updating tasks requiring to select the smallest numbers or objects presented. The r

The progression of severe behavior disorder in young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Behavior disorders, such as self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive behavior are common among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. While we have learned much about those behaviors over the past few decades, longitudinal research that looks at developmental trajectory has been rare. This study was designed to examine the trajectory of these three forms of severe behavior disorders over a one year time period. The behaviors were measured on two dimensions: frequency of occurrence and severity. Participants were 160 infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays
