Bats, as members of the order Chiroptera, are vital to ecosystems and serve as reservoirs for numerous microorganisms, some of which can cause zoonotic diseases. Human interactions with bats are increasing due to habitat alterations, making it essential to understand their microbiota, particularly potential pathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the excretion of zoonotic bacteria and protozoa in insectivorous bats from four caves in the provinces of Ragusa, Catania, and Syracuse (Sicily, Southern Italy) using molecular biology tests for zoonotic agents, including Bartonella henselae, Borrelia…

Leptospira is a bacterial genus which includes several pathogenic species. Wild mammals can act as reservoir hosts, shedding bacteria in their urine. Leptospirosis is an important health problem in Villeta, but data regarding potential reservoirs hosts and natural sources of infection are still scarce. We aimed to detect and characterize the presence of Leptospira among small wild mammals from Villeta municipality, Colombia. Small wild mammals from three orders: Didelphimorphia, Chiroptera and Rodentia, were sampled in the region. DNA was extracted from kidney samples and screened for Leptospi…

Variation in immune defense influences infectious disease dynamics within and among species. Understanding how variation in immunity drives … nds to the acute stress of capture and to storage time of frozen samples across the orders Aves and Chiroptera. After adjusting for host phylogeny, sample size, and total microbe colony-forming units, we find preliminary evidence that the constitutive innate immune defense of bats may be more resilient to handling stress and storage time than that of birds. …

Automated monitoring of individually marked animals enables the collection of high-resolution activity data, yet commercial systems capable of continuous individual organism tracking remain inaccessible to many research programs. BatLog is a modular, open-source passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag logging system built on Arduino-compatible hardware, costing ∼180 USD. BatLog is designed to extend the application of existing PIT tag infrastructure by incorporating individual identification data into continuous behavioral datasets, without requiring additional animal handling or marking. Pathogens that persist in an environmental reservoir can drive host populations to extinction because host abundance does not limit pathogen survival or reproduction. Fungal pathogens are of particular conservation concern because many fungi are generalists that persist in the environment. One example is Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the causative agent of white-nose syndrome (WNS), which has caused severe declines in hibernating bat populations across North America. Treatment of environmental reservoirs could help reduce transmission of P. destructans, and thus, reduce bat population declines

Understanding viral infection dynamics in wildlife hosts can help forecast zoonotic pathogen spillover and human disease risk. Bats are important reservoirs of zoonotic viruses, and bat metapopulation dynamics, seasonal reproductive patterns and other life-history characteristics might explain temporal variation in the spillover of bat-associated viruses. Here, we analyse reproductive effects on viral dynamics in free-ranging bat hosts, leveraging a multi-year, global-scale viral detection dataset that spans eight viral families and 96 bat species from 14 countries. Bayesian models revealed th

We detected Histoplasma capsulatum in 2 bat-inhabited tunnels of a tourist route in northern Spain. This finding confirms that the geographic distribution of this fungal pathogen is wider than previously thought. Our results highlight the need for surveillance and assessment of the potential infection risk for workers and visitors.

The surveillance of wildlife viromes is essential for identifying zoonotic threats within the One Health framework. This study analyzed rectal and oral swabs from 88 individuals representing 13 species as felids, wild rodents, marsupials and non-human primates in Southern Brazil using metagenomic sequencing. Akodon montensis (n = 15 individuals) and Coendou spinosus (n = 4) harbored Chikungunya virus (ChikV, Togaviridae), marking its first detection in these hosts. Molossus molossus (n = 17) presented Coronaviridae and Orthoherpesviridae, while Eptesicus furinalis (n = 1) also carried Coronavi

Bats carry zoonotic viruses which can be harmful to humans. Zoonotic diseases have caused huge economic losses in the production and trade of animal products and recurring diseases outbreaks and global pandemics. Studies have shown that Rabies and rabies related viruses (Lyssavirus genera, family Rhabdoviridae) are spread to humans by bats. The aim of this article is to assess the global distribution of bat Rhabdoviruses, detection and challenges in Africa. Studies have shown that the prevalence of Rhabdoviruses is high in Africa and Asia. In addition to Rabies virus, other bat Rhabdoviruses w

Global changes have increased the risk of emerging infectious diseases, which can be prevented or mitigated by studying host-parasite interactions, among other measures. Bats and their ectoparasitic flies of the families Streblidae and Nycteribiidae are an excellent study model but, so far, our knowledge has been restricted to fragmented records at a local scale. To help boost research, we assembled a data set of bat-fly interactions from 174 studies published between 1904 and 2022 plus three original data sets. Altogether, these studies were carried out at 650 sites in the Neotropics, mainly

Blood feeding ectoparasites of bats have been found to contain insect-specific and vertebrate-infecting viruses of agricultural and medical importance. While it is plausible that some of these are of bat origin, those would be sourced either from the bat exterior or their blood meal. Bats, in addition to their regular diets, consume numerous ectoparasites during grooming. All microbes on and in the ectoparasites would then be introduced into the bat gut upon ingestion of the ectoparasites. To investigate the potential impact of bat ectoparasite viromes on the gut viral microbiome of bats, we c

Despite the great diversity of bats (64 species) in the State of Acre, northwestern Brazil, there are no studies on occurrence and diversity of Bartonella spp. in bats in this region. The present study investigated the occurrence and molecular identity of Bartonella spp. in spleen samples (n = 271) from bats of 30 different species from this region, within the Amazon biome. Twenty-one out of 208 (10.1%) samples positive in the PCR for the mammalian gapdh endogenous genes were positive in the qPCR for Bartonella spp. based on the nuoG gene. The two gltA Bartonella genotypes detected grouped wit

Molossus molossus is an insectivorous molossid bat that is important in the control of nocturnal insects. It is the nominal and the most representative species of the family. However, there are few studies about its reproduction. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate variations of its female reproductive organs during the different reproductive phases. Twenty adult females, divided into four sample groups (non-reproductive, early and advanced pregnancy and lactation), were submitted to morphological and morphometric analyses. Results show that the female reproductive system of M. molossus is comp

BACKGROUND: Haemosporidian parasites of the genus Polychromophilus infect bats worldwide. They are vectored by obligate ectoparasitic bat flies of the family Nycteribiidae. Despite their global distribution, only five Polychromophilus morphospecies have been described to date. The two predominant species, Polychromophilus melanipherus and Polychromophilus murinus, are broadly distributed and mainly infect miniopterid and vespertilionid bats, respectively. In areas where species from different bat families aggregate together, the infection dynamics and ability of either Polychromophilus species

Histoplasma species infect humans and animals, notably bats. Histoplasma species are thermally dimorphic fungi existing in mycelial form in the natural environment and in yeast form in infected tissues. In this narrative literature review, we summarize the occurrence of Histoplasma spp. in different species of bat tissues (n = 49) and in soil admixed with bat guano where the species of bat dwelling nearby has been identified (an additional 18 species likely infected) to provide an up-to-date summary of data. Most positive isolations are from the Americas and Caribbean, with some studies from T

Novel coronavirus species of public health and veterinary importance have emerged in the first two decades of the twenty-first century, with bats identified as natural hosts for progenitors of many coronaviruses. Targeted wildlife surveillance is needed to identify the factors involved in viral perpetuation within natural host populations, and drivers of interspecies transmission. We monitored a natural colony of Egyptian rousette bats at monthly intervals across two years to identify circulating coronaviruses, and to investigate shedding dynamics and viral maintenance within the colony. Three
