[Advances in the studies of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in males].

Chlamydia trachomatis(Ct) infection in reproductive tract is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases at present. However, relatively fewer studies are made on Ct infection in men. The paper reviews the epidemiology of Ct infection in males, Ct infection and male diseases, Ct infection and male infertility, and the detection of Ct infection in men. It aims at providing a theoretical basis and a practical guide for the prevention and control of Ct infection in men.

[A study on ways of intrauterine infection of chlamydia trachomatis].

OBJECTIVE: To study the route of intrauterine infection of chlamydia trachomatis (CT). METHODS: Seven hundred and seventy-two cervical samples from in women and 105 matched maternal-labom neonatal samples composed of cervical samples, cord blood, amniotic fluid, conjunctival and nasopharyngeal samples of neonate were detected by PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing technique. RESULTS: CT were detected in 87 of 772 (11.3%) cervical samples. In the 81 matched maternal-infant samples from pregnant women with cervical CT-positive, CT were not detected in all of the cord blood samples. In the 30 CT-positi

Chlamydia pneumoniae as a triggering infection in reactive arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of Chlamydia pneumoniae as a triggering infection in reactive arthritis (ReA). METHODS: Sixty patients with acute arthritis were screened for the evidence of triggering infections. In all patients, bacterial stool cultures, culture of Chlamydia trachomatis in urethra/cervix, and/or bacterial serology were studied. Chlamydia pneumoniae antibodies were measured by specific microimmunofluorescence test. RESULTS: Thirty-five of 60 patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for ReA. Thirty-one patients had microbial/serological evidence of preceding infection due

[Arteriosclerosis as a sequela of chronic Chlamydia pneumoniae infection].

In the last years several new data allow a controversial but convincing interpretation of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis). Atherosclerosis can be apparently the result of ultrachronic persistent infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae and not the result of different risk factors. The main arguments for the chlamydial genesis are: 1. Correlation of coronary heart disease and other atherosclerotic disease with antibodies against C. pneumoniae. 2. C. pneumoniae could be detected with different techniques (PCR, immunohistology, electromicroscopy, culture) in a high percentage in a

[Chlamydia infection and female low fertility in Morocco].

Chlamydia trachomatis infection is recognised as the most common asymptomatic sexually transmitted disease, and this may lead to severe complication including infertility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the part that this pathology takes in the female hypofertility, using serologic, cell culture, and histopathologic tests. Some of the women had undergone biopsies during coelioscopic exam, the others during salpingectomy. Cervical specimens were carried from other women. They had as clinical signs: primary or secondary infertility, ectopic pregnancy, syndrome of synechie, hydrosalpin

Epizootic of Chlamydia psittaci infection in goats in Taiwan.

Epizootic abortion in goats has been frequently reported in Taiwan since 1993. The outbroken flocks were found in most of districts in Taiwan. No apparent clinical signs were found in aborted doe. The typical abortion occurred in the last two months of pregnancy. The incidence of abortion was from 10% to 87% in outbroken farms in 1993, and a total of 976 out of 2130 pregnancies (46%) were found abortion in our investigation. Gross lesions in aborted fetuses included generalized haemorrhage and swollen liver. Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from tissues of aborted fetuses and from vaginal swabs

Experimental Chlamydia psittaci infection of Japanese quail.

Japanese quail were used for the infection model of avian chlamydiosis. One-day-old Japanese quail were highly susceptible to lethal infection by a Chlamydia psittaci strain of budgerigar origin upon inoculation via the air sac route with 10(4.1) FFU of the organism, showing an acute and lethal course with chlamydial propagation. In contrast, 7-day-old quail developed resistance to the infection as shown by the lack of lethal effect with the same dose. The resistance of 7-day-old birds was abolished by immunosuppressive treatment with cyclophosphamide. Upon inoculation with a sublethal dose of

Lower respiratory tract infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae.

Chlamydia pneumoniae, also known as TWAR, is a common respiratory pathogen that can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and pharyngitis. The clinical similarities between C pneumoniae infection and infection with other respiratory pathogens together with the lack, until recently, of readily available diagnostic tests for C pneumoniae have hindered its recognition and treatment in the outpatient setting. In this report, three patients with acute C pneumoniae infection from the Acute Respiratory Disease Study at the University of Washington are described, and the microbiologic characteristic

Infection due to Chlamydia trachomatis in pregnancy and the newborn.

Bacteria in the genus Chlamydia comprise three species, C. trachomatis, C. psittaci and C. pneumoniae. C. trachomatis infection is common, varying in prevalence in women from 0% to 37%. In the United States, the prevalence rate is estimated currently to be about 5%. Pregnancy may predispose to an increased chance of infection with C. trachomatis, through physiological immunosuppression and/or cervical ectopy. Maternal antibodies to C. trachomatis provide limited, if any, protection for the newborn. C. trachomatis causes pelvic inflammatory disease--which can result in tubal infertility or ecto

The role of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in female infertility.

The incidence of positive Chlamydia cultures in females undergoing laparoscopy for tubal patency is high. We advocate routine screening for Chlamydia infection in females with infertility. Of seventy-five patients undergoing laparoscopy for infertility, 49 grew Chlamydia on tissue culture of material from the cervix, an incidence of 65.3%. of these 49 cases, 33 (67.3%) had tubal blockage. In asymptomatic patients, 22 out of 50 had positive cultures from the cervix, an incidence of 44%. Peritoneal fluid culture was negative in all infertile patients. When compared to populations studied elsewhe

Chlamydia psittaci infection and associated infertility in sheep.

Nineteen ewes were injected subcutaneously with the agent of enzootic ovine abortion, Chlamydia psittaci serovar 1, at 50 days gestation. Placental and fetal tissues were examined at 15 days postinfection and thereafter at ten day intervals. Placental infection was detected at 15 days postinfection. Only postinoculation sera collected from postinfected ewes contained antibodies reactive to C. psittaci. Five (26%) chlamydial infected ewes experienced inapparent fetal loss before day 105 of gestation. This finding is significant since C. psittaci infection in sheep is commonly associated with ab

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in acute exacerbations of COPD.

Chlamydia pneumoniae, strain TWAR, is a frequent causative agent of acute respiratory disease. We assessed the incidence and prevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae infections in COPD. We studied, from January 1990 to May 1991, 142 out-patients with acute purulent exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 114 healthy control subjects. Oropharyngeal swab specimens were collected at each exacerbation and analysed using a high definition monoclonal indirect fluorescent antibody test for Chlamydia pneumoniae identification. Evidence of Chlamydia infection in a Belfast antenatal population.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an important cause of postpartum endometritis and neonatal conjunctivitis. However, the prevalence of chlamydial genital infection varies considerably from one population group to another. A study was thus conducted to determine the incidence of C trachomatis infection of the cervix in an unselected group of women attending a Belfast antenatal clinic. One hundred and six patients were screened for evidence of current cervical infection with C trachomatis or serological evidence of past infection. C trachomatis was identified in 2.9%, and there was evidence of past infe

[Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women with ectopic pregnancy].

Chlamydia trachomatis infection, presumably sexually transmitted, has been implicated in the spread of tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy. In searching evidence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection as a possible cause of tubal ectopic pregnancy, we enrolled 40 consecutive pathologically proven tubal ectopic women and 37 normal early intrauterine pregnant women from our OPD and ward from Jan. 1989 to July 1989. All cases underwent a structured interview giving particular attention to past reproductive history, contraception history and past history of STD. The levels of serum antibody IgG to

Endocervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Canadian adolescents.

The highest prevalence rate of sexually transmitted chlamydial infection is among adolescent girls. To determine the rate among predominantly asymptomatic girls who were seen at a pediatric gynecology unit and to identify those at high risk we screened 541 such patients from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 1986, by means of direct fluorescent antibody testing; 422 (78.0%) were asymptomatic. The most common reason for presentation was a request for contraceptive advice (the reason for 59.2% of the patients). Of the 446 patients (82.4%) who were sexually active 66 (14.7%) had evidence of chlamydial infection

[Several years' course of an oculogenital Chlamydia infection].

A 46-year-old woman had been suffering from recurrent bilateral keratoconjunctivitis, vascularized corneal scars, and incipient pannus vasculosus for five years. Oculogenital chlamydial disease was diagnosed by Giemsa stains, McCoy cell culture, and serum IgG immunofluorescent techniques. Isolates from cervical smears were positive for C. trachomatis in cell cultures. Systemic therapy with doxycycline 200 mg per day for 14 days resulted in resolution of the acute symptoms and no further recurrences. The patient's partner was also treated with tetracyclines. Because of reduction of vision, a la

Effect of vaccination on feline Chlamydia psittaci infection.

Experimental ocular infection of specific-pathogen-free cats with the feline pneumonitis strain of Chlamydia psittaci produced an acute, severe conjunctivitis characterized by blepharospasm, conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, and ocular discharge. Organisms were recovered from the conjunctiva for several weeks, and persistent genital and gastrointestinal infection also resulted from the ocular infection in some cats. Subcutaneous vaccination with live feline pneumonitis C. psittaci 4 weeks before ocular challenge significantly reduced the severity of the conjunctivitis. However, there was no ef

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in homosexual men.

Chlamydial cell culture isolation rates from 51 unselected homosexual men were 9.3% from the urethra, 4.3% (pharynx), and 6.5% (rectum). All the positive cultures showed extremely few inclusions. Direct immunofluorescence with the Microtrak reagent (Syva) was an acceptable alternative technique for non-genital sites, whereas the infectious disease enzyme immunoassay (IDEIA) (Boots-Celltech) was unsuitable.

Chlamydia trachomatis infection at a family planning clinic.

Endocervical samples were taken for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis from 500 consecutive patients attending a family planning clinic. The Microtrak direct specimen immunofluorescence test was used. Swabs from 79 patients (15.8%) were positive for chlamydia. Seventy-one (95%) of these patients were symptom free, and 39.8% were under 20 years old. Twenty-one patients were pregnant, seven (33%) had chlamydia. Those positive for chlamydia had twice the frequency of abnormal smears and other sexually transmitted infections as those who were negative. Contraceptive use was similar except that
