A Case Report and Literature Review: Chlorhexidine-induced anaphylaxis in a hemodialysis patient.

Chlorhexidine is a widely used antiseptic in healthcare settings, particularly for catheter site preparation in hemodialysis patients. While generally considered safe, chlorhexidine can rarely cause severe IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions. Here we report the case of a 47-year-old man on maintenance hemodialysis who experienced two episodes of severe allergic reactions during dialysis sessions. During the first episode the patient presented with dyspnea, hypotension, and pruritus, which we initially attributed to the dialyzer membrane reaction. After changing the dialyzer membrane, the patie

Bioelectronic and photogenerated electron synergistic catalyzed removal of chlorhexidine: Degradation and mechanism.

The extensive use of the antimicrobial compound chlorhexidine (CHD) has emerged as a significant threat to both the ecological environment and human health. To address this concern, a photo-electrochemical cell-microbial fuel cell (PMFC) system was studied for CHD removal by incorporating, for the first time, the photocatalysts black phosphorus/carbon nitride (BPCN) and Cu2O into the bioanode and air cathode of an MFC, respectively. By combining electrochemical, macro-genomic, and intermediate product analyses, the underlying mechanisms of bioelectronic and photoelectronic synergies were eluci

Conservative Approach to Treatment of Cyclosporine-Induced Gingival Hyperplasia With Azithromycin and Chlorhexidine.

Treatment of symptomatic cyclosporine-induced gingival hyperplasia can be challenging, especially if continued use of cyclosporine is necessary for adequate control of the underlying disease. We outline a simplified approach for conservatively managing cyclosporine-induced gingival hyperplasia using azithromycin and chlorhexidine.

In vitro spectroscopic analysis of the chemical interaction between calcium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine.

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition resulting from the chemical interaction between calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2] and chlorhexidine (CHX) using different 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), correlated two-dimensional spectroscopy (2D COSY), heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The 5.25% Ca(OCl)2 was mixed with 2% CHX in a 1:1 ratio, obtaining an orange-brown precipitate that was filtered, washed in ultrapure water, dried and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, 2D COSY, HSQC and FTIR

Effect of Chlorhexidine on the Bonding Effect of an Etch-and-Rinse Adhesive to Pretreatment Dentin.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on an etch-and rinse adhesive to dentin. Caries-free molars were selected and processed to expose a flat dentin surface. The specimens were bonded with a composite resin by an etch-and-rinse adhesive, which was pretreated with 2% CHX for 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 seconds. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) was evaluated before and after thermocycling. No significant differences were observed between groups before thermocycling. The 60-second CHX-pretreated group showed a significantly greater MTBS than the control gr

Targeted screening and identification of chlorhexidine as a pro-myogenic circadian clock activator.

BACKGROUND: The circadian clock is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that exerts pervasive temporal control in stem cell behavior. This time-keeping machinery is required for orchestrating myogenic progenitor properties in regenerative myogenesis that ameliorates muscular dystrophy. Here we report a screening platform to discover circadian clock modulators that promote myogenesis and identify chlorhexidine (CHX) as a clock-activating molecule with pro-myogenic activities. METHODS: A high-throughput molecular docking pipeline was applied to identify compounds with a structural fit for a hy

In vitro evaluation of microbial contamination and the disinfecting efficacy of chlorhexidine on orthodontic brackets.

BACKGROUND: Contamination of orthodontic appliances is due to the unhygienic practices followed during manufacturing and packaging processes, which may lead to cross-contamination. Although literature has indicated the need for sterilization or disinfection of orthodontic appliances before using in the oral cavity, this is still not employed in routine clinical practice. In this view, the current study evaluates the bacterial load on orthodontic brackets along with the disinfecting efficacy of chlorhexidine. METHODS: A total of 140 brackets were obtained from four different manufacturers and

Efficacy of chlorhexidine rinses after periodontal or implant surgery: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Biofilm management and infection control are essential after periodontal and implant surgery. In this context, chlorhexidine (CHX) mouth-rinses are frequently recommended post-surgically. Despite its common use and many studies in this field, a systematic evaluation of the benefits after periodontal or implant surgery is-surprisingly-still missing. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits of chlorhexidine rinsing after periodontal or implant surgery in terms of plaque and inflammation reduction potential. Furthermore, to screen whether the concentration changes or additives in CHX sol

Chemometric evaluation of the efficacy of locally administered chlorhexidine in patients with periodontal disease.

The process of assessment of drug efficacy produces multivariate data which are difficult to interpret. The interpretation and extraction of relevant data requires application of chemometric algorithms for multivariate data analysis. The aim of our study was evaluation of the efficacy of local treatment with chlorhexidine (CHX) in patients suffering from periodontal disease by chemometric algorithms for multivariate data analysis. Several algorithms were used: principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and orthogonal projection to latent structures

Standardized testing with chlorhexidine in perioperative allergy--a large single-centre evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative allergic reactions to chlorhexidine are often severe and easily overlooked. Although rare, the prevalence remains unknown. Correct diagnosis is crucial, but no validated provocation model exists, and other diagnostic tests have never been evaluated. The aims were to estimate (i) the prevalence of chlorhexidine allergy in perioperative allergy and (ii) the specificity and sensitivity for diagnostic tests for chlorhexidine allergy. METHODS: We included all patients investigated for suspected perioperative allergic reactions in the Danish Anaesthesia Allergy Centre duri

Limb wounding and antisepsis: iodine and chlorhexidine in the early management of extremity injury.

Extremity injury and contamination as consequence are features of high-energy wounding. A leading cause of disability and the commonest cause of late complications, prevention of wound infection determines the ultimate outcome in these populations. Multiple variables influence the development of infection, one of which is the dressing used on the wound. Antiseptic-soaked gauze dressings feature in the early management of limb trauma despite a lack of evidence to support this. Iodine and chlorhexidine are ubiquitous in other aspects of health care however, and a plethora of studies detail their

Evaluation of the antimicrobial properties of an alcohol-free 2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) contribute to morbidity and mortality and increase the costs of patient care. Effective skin decontamination is recommended to reduce the risk of SSI and the transmission of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. A macrodilution broth method and an in vitro time-kill method were used to determine the antimicrobial properties of an alcohol-free 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) solution against seven bacterial strains, including clinically derived strains of Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The CHG solution reduced bacterial
