Metastatic tumors in the choroid plexus are generally considered to be very rare. The authors present a case of lung large cell carcinoma with a single metastatic tumor in the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle trigone. Precontrast computed tomographic (CT) scans showed an isodensity mass with extensive peritumoral edema, which was considerably enhanced on the postcontrast CT scans. We report a case of malignant choroid plexus papilloma (MCPP) of the IV ventricle in a child with prominent extraventricular expansive growth, mostly into the cerebellopontine angle. A case of choroid plexus neoplasm histologically composed of tubular structures lined by a layer of cuboidal epithelium is reported. The neoplasm was located in the fourth ventricle of a 26-year-old man. The intense positivity for antisera anti-vimentin, anti-cytokeratin, anti-EMA and anti-S100 protein exhibited by these cells was consistent with choroid plexus origin. The patient is alive and in good health 5 years after surgery. The lesion represents a benign choroid plexus neoplasm not previously reported. The name "tubular adenoma of choroid plexus" is suggested for this variant.

A newborn infant with marked hydrocephalus had a large papilloma of the choroid plexus originating in the fourth ventricle and infiltrating the brain stem. The computed tomographic (CT) scan appearance was distinctive, showing vascularity and marked enhancement with contrast medium. Histological confirmation was made from several surgical sites. Total removal of the tumor was not possible. Review of congenital choroid plexus brain tumors reveals the location of this child's tumor in the fourth ventricle to be uncommon.

Morphological study of the choroid plexuses of two patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) revealed an enormously increased number of mitochondria with structural abnormalities in almost all of the choroidal epithelial cells. Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) was observed by light and electron microscopy, using surgically excised tissues in 7 cases and cultivated cells. CPP cells had numerous microvillous processes showing balloon-like features, lysosomes containing haemosiderin, and highly electron-dense irregular granules about 150-300 nm in diameter. The choroid plexus papillomas are rare neoplasms. They constitute about 0.5 per 100 of all intracranial tumors. From a histological point of view they are generally benign tumors. However they give a high mortality rate due to their location near vital structures, the rapid production of intracranial hypertension, and the rich vascularity making risky the surgical treatment.

Biopsy material from two cases of histologically proven malignant choroid plexus papilloma was studied by electron microscopy. Both tumours differed from benign papillomas in showing poorly differentiated areas with numerous mitoses. Twelve histologically verified choroidal melanomas, 15 normal fellow eyes and 4 simulating lesions (vitreous haemorrhage, choroidal haemorrhage, retinal detachment and choroidal detachment) were CT-scanned before and after intravenous contrast media (maximal attenuation in the tumours were estimated from a computerized curve corresponding to a line placed from the center of the eye, through the tumour to the outside of the bulb). Nine years after enucleation of the right eye because of a choroidal melanoma a choroidal melanoma a metastasis of the melanoma developed in the left orbit. Histologically, the two tumors were identical spindle-cell B melanomas. No other primary tumors or metastases were found. This is only the third case of this rare form of metastasization ever reported.
