Citric acid cross-linking of a hydrogel from Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis M.) engenders a pH-responsive, superporous, and smart material for drug delivery.

The current research work is based on the evaluation of a citric acid (CA) cross-linked Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis M.) leaf hydrogel (CL-ALH) for pH-dependent and sustained drug release application. The CA was used in different concentrations (1.25, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0%) to cross-link the ALH using homogenous reaction conditions. The synthesis of CL-ALH was confirmed through Fourier transform and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies. The thermal analysis indicated that the ALH and CL-ALH were stable and decomposed in two steps. The scanning electron microscopic images of CL-ALH con…

Effect of citric acid modification on the properties of hydrochar and pyrochar and their adsorption performance toward methylene blue: crucial roles of minerals and oxygen functional groups.

Modification is widely used to enhance the adsorption performance of pristine hydrochar (HBC) and pyrochar (BC). However, comparisons between modified HBC and BC toward pollutant removal have rarely been reported. In this study, pristine HBC and BC derived from rice straw were first produced, and then citric acid (CA) was used as a modifier to synthesize CA-modified HBC (CAHBC) and CA-modified BC (CABC). Furthermore, the adsorption performance of biochars toward methylene blue (MB) was investigated. The results showed that BC exhibits relatively rough surfaces and contains more minerals (ash),…

[Metabolic characteristics of the Yarrowia lipolytica strain producing alpha-ketoglutaric and citric acids from ethanol and the effect of [NH4+] and [O2] on yeast respiration and biosynthesis].

The comparative studies performed in this work showed that overproduction of alpha-ketoglutaric acid (KGA) from ethanol by the mutant Yarrowia lipolytica strain I requires both a deficiency of thiamine and a relatively high concentration of ammonium ions in the medium, whereas CA overproduction requires an almost zero concentration of ammonium ions. The threshold value of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the medium, pO2, for CA overproduction is considerably higher than for KGA overproduction. The respiration rate of CA-overproducing cells was 2-3.5 times higher than that of KGA-overprodu

Citric Acid Cycle Metabolites Predict Infarct Size in Pigs Submitted to Transient Coronary Artery Occlusion and Treated with Succinate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors or Remote Ischemic Perconditioning.

Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) inhibition with malonate during reperfusion reduced myocardial infarction in animals, whereas its endogenous substrate, succinate, is detected in plasma from STEMI patients. We investigated whether protection by SDH inhibition is additive to that of remote ischemic perconditioning (RIC) in pigs submitted to transient coronary artery occlusion, and whether protective maneuvers influence plasma levels of citric acid cycle metabolites. Forty pigs were submitted to 40 min coronary occlusion and reperfusion, and allocated to four groups (controls, sodium malonate 10 mm…

Near-complete phosphorus valorization from sewage sludge: Cost-effective co-production of vivianite and bioavailable detoxified hydrochar via a recyclable citric acid-mediated hydrothermal process.

Efficient phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge is bottlenecked by stable phosphorus-binding within complex organic-inorganic matrices. Conventional hydrothermal treatments suffer from limited P dissolution, inevitable re-fixation, poor hydrochar P-bioavailability, and heavy metal (HM) risks. This work proposes a novel, recyclable citric acid (CA)-mediated hydrothermal process. Relying on strong CA-mediated coordination and its synergistic effects with hydrothermal conditions and sludge components, this process achieves efficient phosphorus release and targeted speciation control while mitiga…

Elimination of representative fluoroquinolones, penicillins, and cephalosporins by solar photo-Fenton: degradation routes, primary transformations, degradation improvement by citric acid addition, and antimicrobial activity evolution.

This work studies the degradation of seven representative antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, levofloxacin, oxacillin, cloxacillin, cefalexin, and cefadroxil) by solar photo-Fenton process. The removal of antibiotics by the individual components (i.e., light, H2O2, or Fe (II)) and the complete photochemical system (light/H2O2/Fe (II)) was initially evaluated. Then, the effect of citric acid addition to the photo-Fenton system was assessed. In the third place, the primary transformation products for two illustrative cases (ciprofloxacin and oxacillin treated by photo-Fenton) were determine…

Synthesis of citric acid-coated nanomaterials releasing oxygen and antioxidant vitamin E and investigation of their effects on healthy and cancer cells under hypoxic and normoxic conditions.

Hypoxia and inflammation are in a reciprocal interaction. Oxygen deficiency not only results in prolonged inflammation but also contributes to its continuation by sustaining immune responses. Although various nanocarriers have been designed for oxygen transport or antioxidant drug delivery, this study uniquely combines both functions in a single nanomaterial platform. Here, we report the synthesis of an oxygen-carrying nanomaterial (CPE) functionalized with antioxidant citric acid and loaded with vitamin E. CPE particles exhibit an initial burst release within the first 24 h, followed by a pH-…

Citric acid and hydrogen sulfide cooperate to mitigate chromium stress in tomato plants by modulating the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, chromium sequestration, and subcellular allocation of chromium.

The study aimed to investigate the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in regulating chromium stress (Cr-S) tolerance of tomato plants treated with citric acid (CA). Prior to the Cr treatment, tomato plants were foliar-fed with CA (100 μM) daily for 3 days. Subsequently, the plants were grown for another ten days in a hydroponic system in a 50 μM Cr (VI) solution. Chromium treatment reduced photosynthetic pigments and plant biomass, but boosted the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) malondialdehyde (MDA), H2S, phytochelatins (PCs), and glutathione (GSH), electrolyte leakage (EL), and antioxidant en…

Use of citric acid for reducing CH4 and H2S emissions during storage of pig slurry and increasing biogas production: Lab- and pilot-scale test, and assessment.

The use of sulfuric acid (SA) for reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs, mainly CH4) emissions in manure management encounters with problems related with safety issue and increased H2S emissions. In the present study, citric acid (CA) as an alternative to SA was assessed in the lab-scale experiment at various dosages (pH 5.0-7.0), and then confirmed in the pilot-scale tank (effective volume of 30 ton). During 35 d of pig slurry (PS) storage at 30 °C, it was found that the CA addition to initial pH down to 6.5 could lead negligible reduction, while 85-99% and 48-72% reduction of CH4 and H2S emissions…

Sequential Molecular Events in the Solid-State Acid-Base Incompatibility of Amlodipine Besylate and Citric Acid: 2D-COS-PXRD and 2D-COS-FTIR as Orthogonal Probes of Reaction Sequence in Drug-Excipient Solid-State Incompatibility.

Drug-excipient incompatibility in solid oral dosage forms can generate toxic degradants and compromise potency without producing a visible macroscopic signal in early development. We reported, for the first time, a mechanistically resolved, temperature-sequenced characterization of the solid-state acid-base incompatibility between amlodipine besylate (AMLO; pKa ≈ 9.4) and citric acid (CA; pKa1 3.13; ΔpKa = 6.27) using six orthogonal techniques: DSC, TGA, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), powder X-ray diffractometry with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS-PXR), FTIR with 2D-…
