INTRODUCTION: Clavicle neoplasms account for only 1.01% of bone tumors and the possibility of it being a primary aneurysmal bone cyst is incidentally low. Although rare in incidence, most of the cases reported were treated with en bloc resection either as a primary procedure or during recurrence. The rarity of the disease and the lack of medical literature poses a diagnostic dilemma for the treating orthopedic surgeon, radiologist, and pathologist, that could potentially lead to the lesions being diagnosed at a stage when options to salvage the bone can no longer be considered. In our case, ea…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Clavicular osteomyelitis, unlike the metaphysis of long bones, is a rare condition that poses a challenge for orthopedic surgeons in terms of diagnosis. The unique location of the clavicle makes it crucial to diagnose and effectively manage these non-traumatic clavicular lesions promptly. Localized pain and swelling are common symptoms experienced by patients with clavicular osteomyelitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old boy presented with swelling and pain in the left clavicular area for 6 months. There was no fever or history of trauma. Physical examination reve…

Vascular complications are relatively rare following surgical fixation of midshaft clavicle fractures. Here, we report a case of a woman in her 30s presenting 10 years after right clavicular open reduction and internal fixation with revision 6 years prior with sudden and rapidly progressive neck swelling. Physical examination revealed a soft pulsating mass in her right supraclavicular fossa. Ultrasound and CT angiography of the head and neck showed a pseudoaneurysm of her right subclavian artery with a surrounding haematoma. She was admitted to the vascular surgery team for endovascular repair…

Clavicle fractures are one of the most common injuries of the shoulder girdle. In addition to the targeted clinical examination, the appropriate imaging must be initiated to formulate the correct diagnosis and subsequently apply an appropriate therapeutic method. Indirect force impact in recreational and sports accidents, such as falling on the outstretched or adducted arm, is the most common accident mechanism. The prevalence shows a bipartite clustering. On the one hand, there are young male patients and, on the other hand, female patients from the age of 65. Thus, a heterogeneous patient po…

Midshaft clavicle fractures are the most common fracture of the clavicle accounting for 80% of all clavicle fractures. Traditionally, midshaft clavicle fractures are treated with conservative treatment even when prominent displacement is observed; however, recent studies revealed that nonunion or malunion rate may be higher with conservative treatment. Moreover, recent studies have shown better functional results and patient satisfaction with surgical treatment. This review article provides a review of clavicle anatomy, describes the current clavicle fracture classification system, and outline…

Distal clavicle fractures are less common than mid-shaft fractures in adults and there is no consensus on the best classification system or the ideal treatment approach considering that high nonunion rates have been reported. Although there are numerous treatment options for distal clavicle fractures, a gold standard treatment has not yet been established. Each surgical technique has its pros and cons. In this review article, we provide an overview of classification systems and treatment methods for distal clavicle fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Langerhans` Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease involving proliferation of Langerhans-type cells, which shares immunophenotypic and ultrastructural similarities. In this article, we report a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis in solitary involvement of clavicle of adult male.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 21-year-old male visited outpatient department on account of solitary palpable tumorous lesion in right clavicle. The lesion was found 2 weeks before the visit, and it triggered pain but no tenderness. Findings on X-ray, and CT were suggestive of homogeneous osteolytic lesi…

Shoulder pain is a common presentation in the emergency department. The list of differential diagnoses is broad. This article summarizes common diagnoses of shoulder pain, including bony, infectious, and connective tissue pathologies and their proper treatment. It also reviews which shoulder pain conditions are emergency diagnoses and need immediate treatment and which diagnoses need conservative management and outpatient follow-up.

PURPOSE: Shoulder dystocia is the strongest known risk factor for brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP). Fractures of the clavicle are known to occur in the setting of shoulder dystocia. It remains unknown whether a clavicle fracture that occurs during a birth delivery with shoulder dystocia increases the risk of BPBP or, alternatively, is protective. The purpose of this study was to use a large, national database to determine whether a clavicle fracture in the setting of shoulder dystocia is associated with an increased or decreased risk of BPBP.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 1997 to 2012 Kids' In…

Osteolysis of the distal clavicle is a rare radiological manifestation. It can be of traumatic or nontraumatic origin and is usually seen in weight-lifting trainers as a result of stress-induced osteolysis of the distal clavicle, a phenomenon known as stress failure syndrome. We present a rare case of nontraumatic osteolysis of the distal clavicle in a 65-year-old, male, non-weight lifter who was referred to our outpatient clinic. Osteolysis was revealed on plain radiographs and was confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging. Diagnostic approach, differential diagnosis, and management of this r…

PURPOSE: Clavicle fractures are common injuries in adults and children. Although neurovascular damage is rarely seen, acute subclavian artery pseudoaneurysms and injuries to subclavian vessels were reported for closed fractures of the clavicle. The aim of this study was to identify the morphological details of the subclavian vessels and their relation to the sternoclavicular joint and body of the clavicle.
METHODS: 127 patients (66 females and 61 males) were evaluated using reconstructed three-dimensional computed tomographic angiographies. The point at which the subclavian artery crossed pos…

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The study aimed to find out whether the higher rate of complications described in literature in the case of plate and intramedullary osteosynthesis of clavicle fractures is high enough to discredit one of these methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the period from July 2007 to March 2016, a total of 151 osteosyntheses of diaphyseal clavicle fractures were performed in 149 patients (106 men, 43 women). The plate as well as intramedullary techniques were used in this group of patients. The follow-up of 12 months was completed in 125 patients (91 men, 34 women). The age of patient…

Kabuki syndrome is a rare developmental disorder characterized by typical facial features, postnatal growth deficiency, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and minor skeletal anomalies. It is caused by mutations of the KMT2D and KDM6A genes while recently RAP1A and RAP1B mutations have been shown to rarely contribute to the pathogenesis. We report two patients' presentation of Kabuki syndrome caused by different KMT2D mutations, both including an interrupted/bipartite clavicle. The clinical diagnosis of Kabuki syndrome may be challenging, especially in younger patients and we suggest tha…

BACKGROUND: Short malunion of the clavicle after fracture can change scapular kinematics and alter clinical outcome. However, the effects of malunion on kinematics and outcomes remains poorly understood because there have been no in vivo studies measuring changes during active motion with malunion. This study aimed to measure and to compare in vivo 3-dimensional (3D) scapular kinematics between normal shoulders and shoulders with short malunion using 3D-2-dimensional model image registration techniques.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with clavicle fracture who had been treated conservatively were …

Secular changes refer to short-term biological changes ostensibly due to environmental factors. Two well-documented secular trends in many populations are earlier age of menarche and increasing stature. This study synthesizes data on maximum clavicle length and fusion of the medial epiphysis in 1840-1980 American birth cohorts to provide a comprehensive assessment of developmental and morphological change in the clavicle. Clavicles from the Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection (n = 354), McKern and Stewart Korean War males (n = 341), Forensic Anthropology Data Bank (n = 1,239), and the Mc…

Acute clavicle osteomyelitis in children is rare representing <3% of osteomyelitis cases. We treated a 12-year-old boy who presented with acute pain in the right clavicle and high fever for 4 days. MRI showed abnormal signal in the right clavicle with periosteal reaction. Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood was susceptible to methicillin, clindamycin, and macrolides. Clindamycin was given intravenously for 3 wks and orally for another 3 wks with no recurrence. We reviewed clavicle osteomyelitis cases in children searching PubMed English literature. From a total of 89 studies retrieved, o…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of Titanium elastic intramedullary nailing (TEN) for the treatment of displaced midclavicular fractures.
METHODS: Between February 2010 and February 2013, 62 patients with displaced midclavicular fractures were treated by TEN, including 27 males and 35 females with an average age of 37.6 years old ranging from 15 to 67 years. The course of disease was from 1 to 9 days (means 2.7 days). Thirty-nine cases were treated by closed reduction and 23 cases by assistant small incision. Based on OTA (the Orthopaedic Trauma Association classification) classification, 3

Desmoid tumors are rare, soft-tissue neoplasms that do not metastasize, but exhibit aggressive growth and local invasion. They originate most frequently from abdominal fascial structures, although they can also appear at extra-abdominal sites. The most common extra-abdominal locations include the shoulder, chest wall, back, thigh, and head and neck. In children, desmoid tumors are more infiltrative, having a tendency towards osseous involvement more frequently than in adult patients. We report acase of a supraspinatus muscle desmoid tumor in a female patient with clavicle destruction.
