We present a patient with skin ulcers that did not respond to a 3-week course of treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. As the patient maintained a fish aquarium, mycobacterial infection was suspected. Indeed, reassessment of histopathology revealed acid-fast bacilli, and mycobacterial cultures at 30 degrees C grew Mycobacterium marinum. The activity of enoxacin, a new quinolone carboxylic acid, was evaluated against 3014 clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas and other non-fermenters and Staphylococcus aureus. Comparison was made with gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, netilmicin, ampicillin, piperacillin, carbenicillin, ticarcillin, ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid, trimethoprim, cotrimoxazole and erythromycin. In general enoxacin was the most active compound and resistance was only rarely encountered.

The MICs of 21 beta-lactam antibiotics were measured against 126 clinically significant and epidemiologically unrelated Yersinia enterocolitica isolates.
