Synergistic Neuroprotection of Combined Shenmai and Hypothermia in Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury via ERK-Dependent Anti-inflammatory Effects.

Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury remains a major challenge in patients with ischemic stroke undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Although selective intraarterial hypothermia has shown neuroprotective potential, its therapeutic efficacy is limited, highlighting the need for effective pharmacological adjuncts. This study investigated whether combining intracarotid hypothermia with Shenmai could synergistically enhance neuroprotection against cerebral I/R injury. Cold Shenmai (4 °C) or saline was infused into rat brain. Systemic toxicity was assessed by body weight, serum biochem

Cold-induced vasomotion changes in healthy individuals and patients after median or ulnar nerve repair.

This exploratory study investigated digital vasomotion during and after a standardized cold stress test in healthy subjects and patients previously treated for median or ulnar nerve injury. Twenty-five healthy individuals and 20 patients with a median or ulnar nerve injury were included. Finger perfusion was measured before and after a Cold Stress Test, using Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging. Vasomotion activity was quantified as the area under the curve of synchronized perfusion dips, and comparisons were made within and between the groups. Synchronized perfusion dips were observed in healthy p

Digital amputation, replantation, and cold intolerance.

In a controlled, retrospective, clinical study, the relationships between traumatic digital amputation, digital replantation, and cold intolerance were investigated. The results of the investigation indicate that cold intolerance is a major reason for disability after digital amputation. They also indicate that the cold intolerance experienced after digital replantation is due to the original injury, and that it is not aggravated by the reconstructive surgery. Cold intolerance, in and of itself, is not a contraindication to digital replantation, regardless of whether the patient lives or works

Role of TRPM8 Channels in Altered Cold Sensitivity of Corneal Primary Sensory Neurons Induced by Axonal Damage.

The cornea is extensively innervated by trigeminal ganglion cold thermoreceptor neurons expressing TRPM8 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8). These neurons respond to cooling, hyperosmolarity and wetness of the corneal surface. Surgical injury of corneal nerve fibers alters tear production and often causes dry eye sensation. The contribution of TRPM8-expressing corneal cold-sensitive neurons (CCSNs) to these symptoms is unclear. Using extracellular recording of CCSNs nerve terminals combined with in vivo confocal tracking of reinnervation, Ca2+ imaging and patch-

SYM-2081 a kainate receptor antagonist reduces allodynia and hyperalgesia in a freeze injury model of neuropathic pain.

Cold-freeze injury at -4 degrees C to the rat sciatic nerve produces mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia [M.A. Kleive, P.S. Jungbluth, J.A. Uhlenkamp, K.C. Kajander, Cold injury to rat sciatic nerve induces thermal hyperalgesia or analgesia, 8th World Congress on Pain, Vancouver, BC, Canada, August 1996 (Abstract).]. The NMDA receptor, an excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptor, appears to be involved in the development of allodynia and hyperalgesia following nerve injury. The role, if any, of the kainate receptor, another EAA receptor, remains unknown. In the current study, we evaluate…

Adverse health manifestations in the hands of vibration exposed carpenters - a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite EU regulatory standards, many workers suffer injury as a result of working with hand-held vibrating tools. Our aim of this study was to confirm whether carpenters, a highly exposed group, suffer more injuries to their hands than painters, a group assumed to be less exposed to vibration. METHODS: 193 carpenters (participation rate 100%) and 72 painters (participation rate 67%), all men, answered a questionnaire and underwent a clinical examination to identify manifestations of neural and vascular origin in the hands. Neurosensory affection was defined as having at least one

Lethal and Sublethal Effect of a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Atmospheric Cold Plasma on Staphylococcus aureus.

The lethal and sublethal effect of a dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric cold plasma on Staphylococcus aureus were investigated by nonselective and selective media. The inactivation level and sublethally injured proportions of S. aureus cells by dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric cold plasma depended on the treatment times (0, 5, 15, and 45 s), applied input powers (40, 50, and 60 W), and gap distances (2, 4, and 6 mm). Under weak conditions (e.g., 5 s, 40 W, and 6 mm), the occurrence of inactivation and sublethal injury of S. aureus showed a relatively low level. Strong treatment (

Nationwide epidemiological study for estimating the effect of extreme outdoor temperature on occupational injuries in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the relevance for occupational safety policies, the health effects of temperature on occupational injuries have been scarcely investigated. A nationwide epidemiological study was carried out to estimate the risk of injuries for workers exposed to extreme temperature and identify economic sectors and jobs most at risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The daily time series of work-related injuries in the industrial and services sector from the Italian national workers' compensation authority (INAIL) were collected for each of the 8090 Italian municipalities in the period 2006-2010. Previous recreational cold exposure does not alter endothelial function or sensory thermal thresholds in the hands or feet.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does recreational cold exposure result in cold sensitivity and is this associated with endothelial dysfunction and impaired sensory thermal thresholds? What is the main finding and its importance? Previous cold exposure was correlated with cold sensitivity of the foot, which might indicate the development of a subclinical non-freezing cold injury. Endothelial function and thermal detection were not impaired in cold-sensitive individuals; therefore, further research is required to understand the pathophysiology of subclinical and clinica…

Frostbite and Immersion Foot Care.

Historically, cold injury, hypothermia, and frostbite have been severe problems for military units on the battlefield. Kenneth D. Orr and David C. Fainer captured these difficulties in their book, Cold Injuries in Korea During Winter of 1950-51, still cited in military medical readiness training. While not common in modern conflicts, the potential exists for large numbers of these casualties in war and during training.

Is heat hypoalgesia a useful parameter in quantitative thermal testing of alcoholic polyneuropathy?

Detection of thermal hypoaesthesia, hyperalgesia, and paradoxical sensation significantly contribute to the diagnosis of polyneuropathy (PNP). There is controversy about the clinical usefulness of detected heat hypoalgesia. In 50 chronic alcoholic patients we compared the prevalence and diagnostic value of heat hypoalgesia (HPT) to that of cold (CT) and warm (WT) hypoaesthesia using a "Marstock" thermotest. Clinical examination revealed PNP in 56%, cold hypoaesthesia was present in 62%, warm hypoaesthesia in 24%, paradoxical thermal sensation in 10%, cold and heat hyperalgesia in 12%, and heat

Capsaicin-sensitive primary afferents mediate responses to cold in rats with a peripheral mononeuropathy.

Persistent sensitivity to noxious and innocuous somatic stimuli results from peripheral nerve injury. Following chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in the rat, the hind paw ipsilateral to the injury displays significantly decreased response latencies to a noxious heat stimulus (thermal hyperalgesia), compared with the contralateral uninjured paw. The ligated paw also shows increased lifting and duration of lifting from a cooled (4 +/- 1 degrees C) surface. To characterize the peripheral nerve component of increased sensitivity to cold, CCI rats were systemically injected wit

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis reveals key pathways and metabolites underlying cold tolerance in passion fruit.

Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) production is significantly limited by sporadic cold stress events in unfavorable years. The existence of cultivars with varying cold tolerance offers opportunities for genetic improvement of this high-value crop. To elucidate the molecular basis of cold adaption in passion fruit, we conducted an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis comparing cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive passion fruit cultivars under low-temperature stress. Our multi-omics approach revealed that cold tolerance is associated with significant reprogramming of key pathways, part
