Human recombinant macrophage-CSF (M-CSF) induced migration across polycarbonate or nitrocellulose filters of human peripheral blood monocytes. Checkerboard analysis of M-CSF-induced migration, performed by seeding different cytokine concentrations above and below the filter, revealed that the locomotory response involved chemotaxis, though some gradient-independent augmentation of migration occurred. This report describes the clinical course and pathological findings in a four-year-old male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) which succumbed to fulminant pneumococcal meningitis. The extremely rapid course of this infection emphasizes the importance of early recognition of the clinical manifestations of meningitis in the correct diagnosis and rapid treatment of the condition.

B-cell colony growth of malignant and normal B-cells has been studied in a double layer (agar-fluid) colony assay. Megakaryocytic colony formation by precursor cells from the bone marrow was investigated in 10 patients with a myelodysplastic syndrome. All but one exhibited abnormal colony formation: four showed no colony formation at all, while a decreased number of colonies was noticed in five. The level of urinary Meg-CSF activity in patients with various thrombopoietic disorders was studied. Using scanning electron microscopy to study molluscum contagiosum lesions, it has been possible to demonstrate a unique, well defined sac enclosing the virion colony of each infected keratinocyte. In a group of 14 patients with primary thrombocythaemia (PT) the study of erythropoietic colony formation in vitro showed the development of so-called 'endogenous' colonies, namely colonies with no added erythropoietin (Ep), in all but one case. In the presence of added Ep the colony formation increased slightly in the PT group, but the rise in the control group was so pronounced that any statistical difference between the two groups disappeared. Funduscopic examinations were performed on 139 African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Notable observations were made in 5% including varying degrees of retinal hypopigmentation and nerve fiber myelination. Bilateral optic nerve head colobomas were found in one monkey. This species was easily tranquilized and examined using the described methods.

Bone marrow culture in semi-solid agar was used to assess the proliferative activity and the response to sodium aurothiomalate of the myeloid precursor cells from patients during and after recovery from neutropenia associated with the use of this drug.
