Development of a computer-aided design and finite-element analysis combined method for customized Nuss bar in pectus excavatum surgery.

Pectus excavatum (PEX) is the most common chest deformity in children, which is usually corrected by using the minimally invasive Nuss method. The orthopedic effect of the Nuss operation is mainly evaluated by both the Haller index and the appearance of the chest wall configuration, which is dependent on the operator's clinical experience to a great extent. To improve the orthopedic effect, we proposed a novel method to individually design and optimize the shape of the Nuss bar and to advise its location as well as the incisions. By using the CT imaging data, the three-dimensional model of the

Alleles of a polymorphic ETV6 binding site in DCDC2 confer risk of reading and language impairment.

Reading disability (RD) and language impairment (LI) are common learning disabilities that make acquisition and utilization of reading and verbal language skills, respectively, difficult for affected individuals. Both disorders have a substantial genetic component with complex inheritance. Despite decades of study, reading and language, like many other complex traits, consistently evade identification of causative and functional variants. We previously identified a putative functional risk variant, named BV677278 for its GenBank accession number, for RD in DCDC2. This variant consists of an in

Impact of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) on surgical site infections in pediatric surgery.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a multidisciplinary, evidence-based protocol designed to standardize perioperative care, minimize complications, and optimize recovery. While ERAS has demonstrated significant benefits in adult populations, widespread adoption in pediatric surgery remains in progress. One of its central goals is reducing postoperative infections, particularly surgical site infections (SSIs), which represent a common source of morbidity in children. Core ERAS elements-including perioperative nutrition, glycemic control, fluid and temperature management, antibiotic proph

A finite element analysis of different postures and intra-abdominal pressures for the uterine ligaments in maintaining the normal position of uterus.

Uterine prolapse is a common gynecological disease, which seriously affects the quality of life and physical and mental health of elderly women. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of different conditions (intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) and posture) on stress and displacement of uterine ligaments using the finite element method, and evaluate the contribution of uterine ligaments on uterus. The three-dimensional (3D) models of retroverted uterus and its accessory ligaments were established, loads and constraints were set in ABAQUS software, and the stress and displacement of uter

Particle Analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy With Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis in Pulmonary Pathology Specimens From U.S. Military Service Members Deployed During the Global War on Terror 2002 to 2015.

INTRODUCTION: Between 2001 and 2015, 2.77 million U.S. military service members completed over 5 million deployments to Southwest Asia. There are concerns that deployment-related environmental exposures may be associated with adverse pulmonary health outcomes. Accurate pulmonary diagnosis often requires histopathological biopsy. These lung biopsies are amenable to chemical analysis of retained particulates using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDXA). METHOD: A retrospective review of SEM/EDXA data collected in conjunction with pathologic diagnostic cons

Establishment of Kawasaki disease database based on metadata standard.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a rare disease that occurs predominantly in infants and young children. To identify KD susceptibility genes and to develop a diagnostic test, a specific therapy, or prevention method, collecting KD patients' clinical and genomic data is one of the major issues. For this purpose, Kawasaki Disease Database (KDD) was developed based on the efforts of Korean Kawasaki Disease Genetics Consortium (KKDGC). KDD is a collection of 1292 clinical data and genomic samples of 1283 patients from 13 KKDGC-participating hospitals. Each sample contains the relevant clinical data, genom

Stress distribution of different lumbar posterior pedicle screw insertion techniques: a combination study of finite element analysis and biomechanical test.

At present, the pedicle screw is the most commonly used internal fixation device. However, there are many kinds of common posterior pedicle screw insertion techniques performed to reconstruct the lumbar stability. Therefore, spinal surgeons often face a difficult choice. The stress distribution of internal fixation system is an important index for evaluating safety. Unfortunately, little had been known about the difference of stress distribution of screw-rod systems that established by Roy-Camille, Magerl and Krag insertion techniques. Here, combination of finite element analysis and model mea

Enteral nutritional therapy for induction of remission in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are often preferred over enteral nutrition (EN) as induction therapy for Crohn's disease (CD). Prior meta-analyses suggest that corticosteroids are superior to EN for induction of remission in CD. Treatment failures in EN trials are often due to poor compliance, with dropouts frequently due to poor acceptance of a nasogastric tube and unpalatable formulations. This systematic review is an update of a previously published Cochrane review. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of exclusive EN as primary therapy to induce remission in CD and to examine

Subject-specific rib finite element models with material data derived from coupon tests under bending loading.

Rib fractures are common thoracic injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Several human finite element (FE) human models have been created to numerically assess thoracic injury risks. However, the accurate prediction of rib biomechanical response has shown to be challenging due to human variation and modeling approaches. The main objective of this study was to better understand the role of modeling approaches on the biomechanical response of human ribs in anterior-posterior bending. Since the development of subject specific rib models is a time-consuming process, the second objective of this study

Quantitative Sensory Testing Protocols to Evaluate Central and Peripheral Sensitization in Knee OA: A Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative sensory testing (QST) methods have become widely used for the assessment of nervous system sensitization to nociceptive signalling in studies of people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, few standardised QST protocols have been developed. Variability in their execution may lead to differences in their interpretation. OBJECTIVE: The proposed scoping review will seek to identify various QST methodologies being used in the assessment of sensitization and how sensitization is being defined in people with knee OA. Methods and Analysis: This scoping review will be guid

Refined crystal structures of unligated adenylosuccinate synthetase from Escherichia coli.

Crystal structures of unligated adenylosuccinate synthetase from Escherichia coli in space groups P2(1) and P2(1)2(1)2(1) have been refined to R-factors of 0.199 and 0.206 against data to 2.0 and 2.5 A, respectively. Bond lengths and angles deviate from expected values by 0.011 A and 1.7 degrees for the P2(1) crystal form and by 0.015 A and 1.7 degrees for the P2(1)2(1)2(1) crystal form. The fold of the polypeptide chain is dominated by a central beta-sheet, which is composed of nine parallel strands and a tenth antiparallel strand. Extending off from this central beta-sheet are four subdomain

The Role of Neutrophils in the Pathogenesis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Tumor-associated neutrophils appear to be a crucial element of the tumor microenvironment that actively participates in the development and progression of cancerous diseases. The increased lifespan, plasticity in changing of phenotype, and functions of neutrophils influence the course of the disease and may significantly affect survival. In patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), disturbances in neutrophils functions impede the effective immune defense against pathogens. Therefore, understanding the mechanism underlying such a phenomenon in CLL seems to be of great importance. Here w

Understanding abnormal retinoid signaling as a causative mechanism in congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a frequently occurring source of severe neonatal respiratory distress. It has been hypothesized that abnormal retinoid signaling contributes to the etiology of this developmental anomaly. Here, we use rodent models toward specifically understanding the role of retinoid signaling in the developing diaphragm and how its perturbation is a common mechanism in drug-induced CDH. This includes monitoring of retinoic acid (RA) response element (RARE) activation with RARE-lacZ mice, RA supplementation studies, systematic analyses of the expression profile of key

Regional Brain Iron, Copper, and Zinc in Alcohol Use Disorder: Sex-Specific Differences in Human Post-Mortem Tissue.

BACKGROUND: One of the risks associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) is dementia. While the exact pathology is unknown, there is increasing evidence that alcohol consumption may dysregulate iron homeostasis in the brain. Unregulated iron can produce oxidative stress and cellular damage to neurons, including the iron-dependent form of cell death termed ferroptosis. Previous human work has relied on magnetic resonance imaging and quantitative susceptibility mapping, which estimate iron indirectly. We therefore measured iron directly, together with copper and zinc, in three brain regions of do
