Vector-borne diseases.

Vector-borne diseases have been the scourge of man and animals since the beginning of time. Historically, these are the diseases that caused the great plagues such as the 'Black Death' in Europe in the 14th Century and the epidemics of yellow fever that plagued the development of the New World. Others, such as Nagana, contributed to the lack of development in Africa for many years. At the turn of the 20th Century, vector-borne diseases were among the most serious public and animal health problems in the world. For the most part, these diseases were controlled by the middle of the 20th Century

[Infectious diseases among patients at the Health Centre for Undocumented Migrants in Oslo].

BACKGROUND: Undocumented migrants probably fall outside the scope of public infectious disease control schemes. The article aims to describe the extent of undetected highly hazardous communicable diseases among patients at the Health Centre for Undocumented Migrants in Oslo. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We reviewed the records of all patients who attended the Health Centre for the first time in 2016 or 2017, with a view to age, sex, period of stay in Norway, country category and infection test results from the period 1 January 2016-31 December 2017. RESULTS: There were four new cases of hepatitis B

Incidence and prevalence of vaccine preventable infections in adult patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases (AIIRD): a systemic literature review informing the 2019 update of the EULAR recommendations for vaccination in adult patients with AIIRD.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to update the evidence on the incidence and prevalence rates of vaccine preventable infections (VPI) in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases (AIIRD) and compare the data to the general population when available. METHODS: A literature search was performed using Medline, Embase and Cochrane library (October 2009 to August 2018). The primary outcome was the incidence or prevalence of VPI in the adult AIIRD population. Meta-analysis was performed when appropriate. RESULTS: Sixty-three publications out of 3876 identified records met the

Infection burden among medical events onboard cargo ships: a four-year study.

BACKGROUND: . Cargo ships are medically isolated, yet neglected environments. We aimed to know about medical events onboard cargo ships. METHODS: We reviewed all the medical events onboard a large commercial 471-cargo ship company for 4 years. Medical events were recorded within 20 categories as routinely used by Medical Maritime Consulting Centers, using a 4-level medical gravity score. The χ 2 test and logistic regression and correspondence analyses were used for the analysis of qualitative variables. RESULTS: Excluding wounds and burns, a total of 322 illness events were notified by onboa

Use of non-pharmaceutical interventions to reduce the transmission of influenza in adults: A systematic review.

During seasonal influenza epidemics and pandemics, virus transmission causes significant public health concern. Reduction of viral transmission by non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) has a significant appeal and is often recommended. However, the efficacy of such interventions is unclear. A systematic literature review was undertaken to identify and evaluate the published literature on NPI efficacy to prevent human transmission of influenza virus in adults. Reviewers assessed the quality of eligible studies utilizing the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme for bias and the Scottish Intercol

Bioterrorism: an overview.

Bioterrorism has reached the forefront of the public imagination following recent events across the world. The disaster of 11 September 2001, followed by anthrax letters sent via the US postal system and now renewed tension over Iraq have all brought the possibility of bioterrorism closer. A number of biological agents could be used in a terrorist attack, including anthrax, plague, smallpox and botulinum toxin. The serious diseases that these agents produce have been brought under control in the developed world; however, a lack of protective immunity against such diseases could cause considera

Ending diseases together: the case for multi-communicable disease elimination in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

For decades, communicable disease control in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) has been largely organised disease by disease. Malaria, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, and HIV programmes have each developed their own surveillance systems, supply chains, partnerships, and reporting lines at the national level and to WHO. This structure has delivered real, hard-won gains, and diseasespecific programmes remain the backbone of the region's technical capacity. But it has also produced parallel systems that perform, in many settings, functions that could be shared.

Experts' Perceptions on China's Capacity to Manage Emerging and Re-emerging Zoonotic Diseases in an Era of Climate Change.

Zoonotic diseases transmitted by arthropods and rodents are a major public health concern in China. However, interventions in recent decades have helped lower the incidence of several diseases despite the country's large, frequently mobile population and socio-economic challenges. Increasing globalization, rapid urbanization and a warming climate now add to the complexity of disease control and prevention and could challenge China's capacity to respond to threats of emerging and re-emerging zoonoses. To investigate this notion, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 30 infectious disease

[Intestinal yersiniosis. Clinical importance, epidemiology, diagnosis, and prevention].

Yersinia enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis are causative agents of yersiniosis in humans and animals that have to be separated from Y. pestis, the causative agent of plague, representing a separate clinical and epidemiological entity. Intestinal yersiniosis may manifest in humans as (1) enteritis, (2) terminal ileitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis, or pseudoappendicitis, and (3) septicemia leading to focal abscesses in spleen and liver. The intestinal infection may be followed by reactive arthritis in a number of cases. Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis are distributed worldwide b

Infectious disease control and the dental office: AIDS and other transmissible diseases.

In spite of attempts to modify homosexual behaviour and the sharing of contaminated needles by drug abusers, AIDS virus infections continue to spread throughout the world. The potential for transmission, the lack of a vaccine and effective treatment, and the lethal nature of the disease cause great alarm and influence health care delivery. Dentistry is involved because oral health care is being given knowingly or unknowingly to high-risk individuals. These high-risk individuals are the sources for many other infections with viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoal organisms. In spite of the fact
