The indirect hemagglutination-test (IHA) and the indirect immunefluorescence-test are two modern methods for the serological diagnosis of an echinococcosis. If both tests are employed, the disease can be diagnosed with great reliability. Coccidioidomycosis is a disease endemic to the southwestern United States, parts of Mexico, and Central and South America. Diagnosis of the disease is commonly delayed because of the lack of prompt testing and the dearth of reliable diagnostic tests. Culture and nucleic acid testing require a specimen, yet the typical patient presents with a dry cough and no sputum. Thirteen (3%) of 441 patients had histoplasma antibodies in their sera when examined by the complement fixation test. The serologically histoplama positive individuals were all from a group of 266 patients complaining of chest disorders and from a sub-group of 147 such patients with positive findings on chest x-ray. There were no positives from a group of 175 patients complaining of fevers of unknown origin. The possibility of misdiagnosing lesions which may be due to histoplasmosis as being tuberculous must be considered indifferential diagnosis of pulmonary lesions.

Cross-reactivity in Histoplasma serologic tests was evaluated by using sera from patients with histoplasmosis and other infections. Serum samples from 127 of 134 (95%) patients with histoplasmosis were judged positive by complement fixation tests, and 121 (90%) showed H bands, M bands, or both by immunodiffusion. Results are reported of antibodies to E. histolytica antigen obtained by enzyme immunoassay, complement fixation, indirect hemagglutination and latex agglutination in sera of persons with varying exposure to infection by E. histolytica. The data are compared to findings in non-exposed persons and in patients with amebic liver abscess. From the results it is concluded that the value of serodiagnosis in amebiasis is higher in patients, who have traveled in tropical areas for a limited period, than in residents of the tropics.

This study evaluates the use of a enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis of histoplasmosis and it compares it with a complement fixation test. The results showed a sensitivity of 86% in this diagnosis of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis and specificity of 91% using anti-human IgG. For antihuman IgM the sensitivity was 66% and the specificity 100%. There was a good correlation between the titer of complement fixation test and the optical density index by ELISA.
