Personality traits after recovery from eating disorders: do subtypes differ?

OBJECTIVE: We compared individuals recovered from anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) to determine characteristics that are shared by or distinguish eating disorder (ED) subtypes. METHOD: Sixty women recovered for > or = 1 year from AN or BN were compared with 47 control women (CW). Assessments included the Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, the Temperament and Character Inventory, and Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM-IV. RESULTS: Individuals recovered from

Impact of Cluster C personality disorders on outcomes of contrasting brief psychotherapies for depression.

Twenty-seven of 114 depressed clients, stratified for severity of depression, obtained a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed.; DSM-III; American Psychiatric Association, 1980) diagnosis of Cluster C personality disorder--that is, avoidant, obsessive-compulsive or dependent personality disorder (PD clients)--whereas the remaining 87 did not (non-personality-disorder [NPD] clients). All clients completed either 8 or 16 sessions of cognitive-behavioral (CB) or psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) psychotherapy. On most measures, PD clients began with more severe symptomatolo

Perfectionism dimensions: A network analysis of their relationships with affect and obsessive-compulsive pathological personality traits.

This study investigated the associations of multidimensional perfectionism with positive affect and negative outcomes (affect and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder [OCPD] pathological traits) through network analysis. The sample consisted of 604 Brazilian adults aged 18-74 years. The network analysis showed that perfectionistic concerns (PC) is strongly and positively associated with negative outcomes, while perfectionistic strivings (PS) maintain positive associations with positive affect, but not negative affect. Negative affect seems to operate as a bridge between perfectionism and …

Personality Traits, Dimensions, and Suicidal Behavior in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Results From a Cross-Sectional Study in a Mexican Hospital.

Introduction Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop after exposure to stressful or life-threatening events and is linked to suicidal behavior. Personality is hypothesized to be a mediator of this risk though assessing factors influencing such findings has been difficult due to the psychiatric comorbidities of the disorder. Objective The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between personality and suicidal behavior in people with PTSD. Method This was a cross-sectional study with 67 participants diagnosed with PTSD who completed a structured interview (SCID-II), and an inv

The Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire predicts functioning styles of personality disorder: a trial in healthy subjects and personality-disorder patients.

Normal personality traits, as measured by the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), predicted some personality disorders in a sample of healthy volunteers. Whether these predictions could be more pronounced in patients with personality disorders remains unknown. We administered the ZKPQ and the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), which describes the functioning styles of personality disorder, in 134 patients with a range of personality disorders and in 268 age-, gender- and education level-matched healthy volunteers. Cluster A patients scored lowest on Sociability, cluster B highe

Minimal role of comorbid personality disorder on the quality of life in patients with anxiety spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES: There is no consensus on the definition of Quality of life (QoL). It is considered to be comprised of both psychological and somatical well-being. A variety of tools has been developed to measure subjective and objective (QoL). A number of factors, including demographical and medical may have an impact on QoL. The aim of our study was to compare the QoL in selected anxiety disorders and evaluate the influence of comorbid personality disorder. METHOD: We evaluated data from 278 patients suffering from social phobia, panic disorder and/or agoraphobia, adjustment disorder, generalize

Compulsive exercise in adults with trichotillomania and skin picking disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive exercise (CE) has significant theoretical overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder. No research has examined the relationship between CE and trichotillomania and skin picking disorder, common conditions on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. METHODS: A total of 382 adults (mean age = 29.2, 78.0% female) with trichotillomania (n = 203) and/or skin picking disorder (n = 276) completed an online survey. Participants who met criteria for CE on the Minnesota Impulse Disorders Interview were compared to those who did not meet these criteria on demographics, a clinic

Functional interventions as augmentation strategies for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): scoping review and expert survey from the international college of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (ICOCS).

BACKGROUND: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly exhibit a range of functional difficulties, presumed linked to neurocognitive changes. Evidence-based first-line treatments have limited effect on improving these cognitive-functional problems. Candidate interventions could be used to augment evidence-based treatments by the multi-professional mental health team. METHODS: A scoping review was performed to identify any intervention with at least one peer-reviewed report of clinical improvement in any of the 13 functional domains of the Cognitive Assessment Instrument of Obs

Defense styles and Personality dimensions of research subjects with anxiety and depressive disorders.

We used the Bond Defense Style and Cloninger Tridimensional Personality questionnaires to assess defense styles and personality dimensions in subjects with anxiety and depressive disorders. When measured against a comparison group, maladaptive defense style scores were significantly higher in those with major depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and social phobia, and higher at a trend level in the subjects with obsessive-compulsive disorder and mixed anxiety and depression. However, there were no differences in adaptive defense style scores between the subjects and the co

Clinical features, psychiatric comorbidity, and health-related quality of life in persons reporting compulsive computer use behavior.

BACKGROUND: We sought to examine the demographic and clinical features and psychiatric comorbidity in persons reporting compulsive computer use. METHOD: Sixteen men and 5 women were recruited by advertisement and word-of-mouth. All reported excessive computer use that interfered with social or occupational functioning or caused personal distress. The subjects completed structured and semistructured assessments, including a computer version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS), the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R), and a br

Anankastic personality in historical and contemporary perspective: a literature review.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), rooted in Janet's psychasthenia, Freud's "anal character," and Schneider's notion of anankastia, is among the most common yet least frequently diagnosed personality disorders. Contemporary classifications emphasize its dimensional nature. The central features are perfectionism, rigidity, and excessive need for control. Prevalence in the general population is estimated at 6.5%. In clinical populations, rates are higher: 16% among outpatients and up to 30% in inpatients. OCPD most often co-occurs with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (17‒45%),…

The Placement of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Within a Five-Factor Model of Maladaptive Personality.

Dimensional models of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, as seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are instrumental in explaining the heterogeneity observed in this condition and for informing cutting-edge assessments. Prior structural work in this area finds that OC symptoms cross-load under both Negative Affectivity and Psychoticism traits within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) Alternative Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD). However, tests of OC symptoms in conjunction with assessments of the full AMPD structure and its 25 lower-level facet

Compulsive shopping: A review and update.

The author comprehensively reviews compulsive shopping (CS), a disorder characterized by excessive shopping and/or spending that leads to subjective distress and impaired functioning. CS has been linked to substance use disorders, mood, and anxiety disorders, and to the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. More recently, CS has been considered a behavioral addiction. Most CS experts consider CS an independent disorder. CS has an estimated prevalence of 5% in the United States general population with an onset in the late teens/early 20s. Psychiatric comorbidity is common, including mood, anxiety, sub

[Personality disorders in patients with eating disorders: a controlled study].

A group of 24 eating-disordered female subjects (10 anorexia nervosa--AN--and 14 bulimia nervosa--BN--patients) were interviewed, using a semistructured interview for DSM-III-R Axis-II Personality Disorders (SCID-II). A group of 54 subjects without eating disorder acted as a control group. A high rate of personality disorder (PD) diagnoses occurred in eating disordered subjects (AN and BN patients), with a high prevalence of borderline, dependent, and self-defeating PD. Avoidant and obsessive-compulsive PD were more common in AN patients, whereas BN was associated with histrionic PD. Findings

Dissociative symptoms in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

To clarify the relationship between dissociative symptoms and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), 100 patients with OCD were assessed with standardized instruments measuring symptoms of OCD, dissociation, and depression. Diagnoses of personality disorders and dissociative disorders were made using structured interviews. Compared with a previous study, OCD patients had dissociation scores slightly higher than normal controls and comparable to patients with other anxiety disorders. Patients with elevated dissociation scores had more severe OCD symptoms, were more depressed, and were more likely
