Hippocampus, cortex, and basal ganglia: insights from computational models of complementary learning systems.

We present a framework for understanding how the hippocampus, neocortex, and basal ganglia work together to support cognitive and behavioral function in the mammalian brain. This framework is based on computational tradeoffs that arise in neural network models, where achieving one type of learning function requires very different parameters from those necessary to achieve another form of learning. For example, we dissociate the hippocampus from cortex with respect to general levels of activity, learning rate, and level of overlap between activation patterns. Similarly, the frontal cortex and a

Power of heterogeneous computing as a vehicle for implementing E(3) medical decision support systems.

A computer system of PCs, workstations, minicomputers etc. connected together via a local area network or wide area network represents a large pool of computational power. Our aim is to use this power for the implementation of an E(3) (efficiency, effectiveness, efficacy) medical decision support system, which can be based on different models, the best providing an explanation together with an accurate and reliable response. One of the most viable among models is decision trees, already used for many medical decision-making purposes. In this paper, we present a parallel implementation of a gen

Improved classifications of myocardial bull's-eye scintigrams with computer-based decision support system.

UNLABELLED: In a recent study, artificial neural networks were trained to detect coronary artery disease using scintigraphic data as input. The performance of the networks was better than that of human experts using coronary angiography as a gold standard. In clinical practice, this type of neural networks will not take over the decision-making process from the physician but will assist by proposing an interpretation of the scintigram. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of such decision support on the interpretations of the physicians. METHODS: A population of 135 patients

[A computer-controlled monitoring and therapy system for shock compensation in severe burns (author's transl)].

A computer-controlled control loop for the automatic diagnosis of shock and infusion therapy is reported. External information (off-line) and vital parameters measured with serial devices (on-line) are used by the computer for the automatic control of infusion pumps. By this method the critical shock phase could be prevented in five seriously burned patients. The construction of the system also permits its use in other shock conditions.

Computer-guided minimally invasive sinus augmentation with the Hiossen OneCAS system: a case report.

Implant placement in the posterior maxilla is often limited by insufficient bone height. This report demonstrates a minimally invasive, guided crestal sinus augmentation using the Hiossen OneCAS hydraulic system. A 74-year-old woman presented with a nonrestorable maxillary molar. Extraction, ridge preservation, and guided crestal sinus augmentation were performed using the Hiossen OneCAS system. Implants were simultaneously placed at the molar and premolar sites with successful osseointegration and prosthetic rehabilitation. The guided approach minimized complications and achieved favorable st

VISIOCPR: Monocular Vision-Based CPR Training System with Human-Computer Collaborative Feedback.

High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) aims at saving lives in time-critical emergencies, which requires correct compression rate, depth, and hand placement. However, due to the high cost and environmental constraints of sensor-equipped manikins or dedicated hardware, it is unrealistic to deploy these devices in ordinary training settings. For monocular vision-based methods, estimating compression depth without direct depth signals and tracking hands under severe overlap are difficult. To address these problems, this paper proposes VISIOCPR, a monocular vision-based CPR training syst

Multi-modal computational data analysis for prediction of response to systemic treatment in metastatic melanoma.

INTRODUCTION: Novel therapies like immunotherapy (ICI) and targeted therapy (TT) have significantly improved survival in metastatic melanoma, but treatment failure and/or development of treatment resistance pose major challenges. Radiomics has been shown to be a valuable tool for imaging-based and/or metadata-based (clinomics), non-invasive data analysis to predict therapy response in oncologic patients. This study aims to evaluate the predictive performance of clinical, radiomics, radio-clinomics, and combined radio-clinomics + body composition analysis (BCA) features for treatment response i

Interatrial septum patency - Clinical implication of a grading system based on cardiac computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) has been shown to be an excellent modality not only to assess the coronary arteries but also the interatrial septum. We aimed to develop a classification system to grade interatrial septal patency with a focus on clinical applicability. METHODS: Patients who underwent cardiac CTA from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2022 at a specialized imaging center were included into a registry study. Scans were acquired on a third-generation dual-source CT scanner and retrospectively analyzed using a dedicated post-processing software. RESULT

COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF DRUG TRANSPORT AND PERFUSION WITHIN COMPLEX BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND GROWING TUMORS.

Mass transport is a fundamental process in living organisms, responsible for the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, and drugs from blood vessels to tissues, as well as the removal of waste products back to the vascular and lymphatic systems. This exchange occurs across various biological barriers, including blood vessel walls and cellular membranes, and involves complex mechanical and biochemical interactions. Traditional experimental and clinical methods have provided valuable insights into mass transport, but due to the complexity and heterogeneity of biological systems, computational models are

Development a computer-aided diagnosis system for dental caries detection applying radiographic images.

Delayed diagnosis of certain diseases like dental caries frequently leads to intensified problems due to postponed treatment. Untreated cavities can progress and affect a deeper layers of the tooth, which result in discomfort, infection, and ultimately tooth loss. Presently, manual diagnosis of dental decay in radiographic images by dentists in most dental clinics is prone to errors due to factors such as fatigue and information overload, emphasizing the necessity for automated diagnostic tools. This study develops an intelligent computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for accurate and efficient

Computer-assisted rehabilitation system in the use of motor function recovery: A protocol for scoping review.

BackgroundsMotor dysfunction, a prevalent sequela of neurological disorders such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy, profoundly compromises patients' capacity to perform daily activities and participate in social interactions. To address this challenge, computer-assisted rehabilitation systems (CARS) have emerged as innovative tools for facilitating motor function recovery. However, the rapid proliferation of diverse CARS modalities-encompassing novel technical approaches, interdisciplinary integrations, and heterogeneous clinical applications-has resulted in a fragmented and p

Computer vision-based laser communication system for robust optical beam tracking and alignment.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication is a promising technology for high-speed data transmission, but its effectiveness is highly dependent on precise beam alignment. In this work, we present a computer vision-assisted tracking system designed to maintain robust optical alignment in real time. By combining a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) with a Kalman filter, the system can detect the laser spot accurately and adjust the beam direction through a closed-loop feedback mechanism. Our experimental results show 98.5% tracking accuracy and reliable data transmission at 1 Gbps over

Transforming Smart Healthcare Systems with AI-Driven Edge Computing for Distributed IoMT Networks.

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) with edge computing provides opportunities for the rapid growth and development of a smart healthcare system (SHM). It consists of wearable sensors, physical objects, and electronic devices that collect health data, perform local processing, and later forward it to a cloud platform for further analysis. Most existing approaches focus on diagnosing health conditions and reporting them to medical experts for personalized treatment. However, they overlook the need to provide dynamic approaches to address the unpredictable nature of the healthcare system, whic

Edge Computing System for Automatic Detection of Chronic Respiratory Diseases Using Audio Analysis.

Chronic respiratory diseases affect people worldwide, but conventional diagnostic methods may not be accessible in remote locations far from population centers. Sounds from the human respiratory system have displayed potential in autonomously detecting these diseases using artificial intelligence (AI). This article outlines the development of an audio-based edge computing system that automatically detects chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs). The system utilizes machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze audio recordings of respiratory sounds (cough and breath) and classify the presence or abs

Optimal reaching subject to computational and physical constraints reveals structure of the sensorimotor control system.

Optimal feedback control provides an abstract framework describing the architecture of the sensorimotor system without prescribing implementation details such as what coordinate system to use, how feedback is incorporated, or how to accommodate changing task complexity. We investigate how such details are determined by computational and physical constraints by creating a model of the upper limb sensorimotor system in which all connection weights between neurons, feedback, and muscles are unknown. By optimizing these parameters with respect to an objective function, we find that the model exhib

The role of eye movement signals in non-invasive brain-computer interface typing system.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have shown great potential in providing communication and control for individuals with severe motor disabilities. However, traditional BCIs that rely on electroencephalography (EEG) signals suffer from low information transfer rates and high variability across users. Recently, eye movement signals have emerged as a promising alternative due to their high accuracy and robustness. Eye movement signals are the electrical or mechanical signals generated by the movements and behaviors of the eyes, serving to denote the diverse forms of eye movements, such as fixatio
