Condom breakage and slippage among men in the United States.

Data on condom breakage and slippage from a nationally representative survey show that the average condom breakage rate experienced by 20-39-year-old men who have used a condom in the preceding six months was 2.7%, and that 1.9% of all condoms used during that time broke. Comparable condom slippage rates are 2.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Condom breakage and slippage appear to be 4-5 times higher among black men than among men of other races. Levels of breakage and slippage are also elevated among low-income men and those who used condoms relatively infrequently in the six months before the surv…

Prevention of vaginal trichomoniasis by compliant use of the female condom.

BACKGROUND: Several case-control studies suggest that the male condom protects women against some sexually transmitted diseases. The female condom is the first barrier device under the woman's control that may be effective in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To determine if appropriate use of the female condom decreased the rate of recurrent vaginal trichomoniasis in previously diagnosed and treated women. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and four sexually active women with vaginal trichomoniasis were treated with metronidazole and assigned to a group using the f

A condom sense approach to AIDS prevention: a historical perspective.

Condoms have come a long way since their use in ancient Egypt three millennia ago. Their benefit is well established for the prevention of both contraception and STDs. Although AIDS has revitalized the condom, we must remember that condoms do not prevent the spread of HIV infection, people do. Everyone must take personal responsibility to avoid high risk behavior (e.g.; IV drug use, promiscuous sex, casual sex, etc). If one does engage in high risk sexual behavior, he/she should at least use condom sense.

Sexual behaviour and use of the condom among Ugandan students.

HIV infection is widespread in Uganda. Have its university students, the country's leaders of tomorrow, taken appropriate action? A question … condom as an effective preventive method: most saw it as unsafe or an encouragement to promiscuity. Condoms had been used by 35% of men and 24% of women but were currently always used by only 9% of men and 11% of women. The condom was approved of by only one quarter of respondents. Condom use increased with the number of sexual partners but was less likel …

Poor quality male latex condoms found in Dominican Republic: Quality assurance evaluation and public health impact.

Male condoms are important to prevent transmission of HIV (and other STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. Research was conducted to evaluate the quality of male condoms available in the Dominican Republic market based on preliminary concerns of suspect product. Based on international testing standards (ISO 4074 and ASTM D 3492-08), condoms were sampled across ten prominent brands within the market and evaluated for airburst pressure / volume, freedom from holes, visual defects, package seal integrity, packaging and marking, lubricant quantity, and dimensions. Five of the brands were found to have e…

Sex, condoms and sexually transmissible infections: a qualitative study of sexual health in young Australian men.

Young males have a key role in shaping contraceptive use in a sexual relationship, yet often remain the invisible partner in safe sex promotion. This article describes a conceptual model of STI risk and condom use based on the perceptions and experiences of condom use in a group of young Australian males. An explorative descriptive design was used to conceptualize participants' condom use histories into an organized description of behavior. Forty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of males aged 15 to 25 years over an 18 month period. A sequential analytical p

Allergic contact dermatitis to condoms: description of a clinical case and analytical review of current literature.

We describe the case of a 42-years-old non-atopic man who developed a severe eczematous reaction in the genital area some hours after the use of a condom (Settebello-Hatù Durex) containing a retarding cream. Patch test revealed a strong allergic reaction to the retarding cream and to benzocaine and paraben mix contained in the cream itself. Condoms with retarding cream should be avoided in man sensitized to local anestethetics.

Characteristics of adolescents' sexual partners and their association with use of condoms and other contraceptive methods.

CONTEXT: While a number of studies have examined the association between individuals' characteristics and their contraceptive use, few studies have examined the influence of partners' characteristics on individuals' contraceptive use. METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, multiple logistic analyses were conducted to identify associations between the demographic characteristics of adolescents' heterosexual partners and adolescents' use of condoms or other contraceptive methods. RESULTS: The partners of white and black adolesce…

Association between use of spermicide-coated condoms and Escherichia coli urinary tract infection in young women.

Diaphragm/spermicide use increases the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI). To determine whether spermicide-coated condoms are also associated with an increased risk of UTI, the authors conducted a case-control study at a large health maintenance organization in Seattle, Washington. Cases were sexually active young women with acute UTI caused by Escherichia coli, identified from computerized laboratory files during 1990-1993. Age-matched controls were randomly selected from the enrollment files of the plan. Of 1,904 eligible women, 604 cases and 629 controls (65%) were interviewed. During th…

Barrier contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases in women: a comparison of female-dependent methods and condoms.

INTRODUCTION: Most efforts at sexually transmitted disease (STD) protection center on condom use, but little is known about how condoms compare with other barrier methods, particularly those controlled by women. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of different barrier contraceptives on the prevalence of STDs and other vaginal infections, we retrospectively studied 5681 visits by women to an urban STD clinic. RESULTS: As compared with women using no contraceptive or with tubal ligations, women using the contraceptive sponge or diaphragm had at least 65% lower rates of infection with Neisseria gon…

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of latex condoms using a two-phase nonoxynol 9 system.

In vitro studies were carried out that indicated that a lubricant system consisting of 0.45 +/- 0.1 ml of silicon fluid containing 6.6% +/- 0.5% by volume of nonoxynol 9 and a spermicidal cream consisting of 0.45 +/- 0.1 ml made up of 63.4% polyethylene glycol 400 and 30.0% polyethylene glycol 3350 containing 6.6% +/- 0.5% nonoxynol 9 was effective in reducing sperm motility and viability. This system was tested in vivo with the use of simulated rupture techniques and was found to be equally as effective. Double-blind preference studies were carried out in vivo which showed that the condom sys

Use of Collection Condoms to Retrieve Sperms in a Patient with Idiopathic Anejaculation/Anorgasmia and Infertility.

Male factor infertility can be challenging to treat. Anejaculation/anorgasmia in men can be distressing for them specially when it is coupled with fertility desires. Understanding the pathophysiology of the condition requires careful evaluation. Although novel techniques exist to retrieve sperms form men suffering from anejaculation/anorgasmia, simple and inexpensive methods should be tried in every possible case.

Knowledge and attitudes relating to condoms on the part of African high school children around Johannesburg.

Senior high school children completed a self-administered questionnaire on sexual activity, knowledge of family planning methods, condoms and use of condoms. The study highlighted some useful and interesting information though its value is limited by a poor response rate. The results suggest that at least 50% of the scholars are sexually active, but only about 20% reported sexual intercourse during the month preceding the survey. This small group reports more than 1 sexual partner and unprotected sexual intercourse in over 50% of the cases. Knowledge of condoms was poor and a number of factors…

The evaluation of the Woman's Condom marketing approach: What value did peer-led interpersonal communication add to the promotion of a new female condom in urban Lusaka?

During a mass media campaign accompanying the launch of the Maximum Diva Woman's Condom (WC) in Lusaka, Zambia, a cluster-randomized evaluation was implemented to measure the added impact of a peer-led interpersonal communication (IPC) intervention on the awareness and uptake of the new female condom (FC). The WC and mass media campaign were introduced simultaneously in 40 urban wards in April 2016; half of the wards were randomly assigned to the treatment (IPC intervention) with cross-sectional surveys conducted before (n = 2,364) and one year after (n = 2,430) the start of the intervention.

Condom use peer norms and self-efficacy as mediators between community engagement and condom use among Chinese men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Community engagement strategies are often integrated in public health interventions designed to promote condom use among men who have sex with men (MSM), a key population for HIV prevention. However, the ways in which condom use peer norms and self-efficacy play a role in the association between community engagement and condom use is unclear. This study examines the potential mediating roles of peer norms and self-efficacy in this association. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Chinese MSM in 2015. Recruitment criteria included being born biolo

Association between condom use and use of other contraceptive methods among female sex workers in Swaziland: a relationship-level analysis of condom and contraceptive use.

OBJECTIVES: Nonbarrier modern contraceptive users often are less likely to use condoms, particularly with more intimate sex partners. We examine whether female sex workers (FSWs) in Swaziland who use nonbarrier contraception use condoms less consistently and whether this inverse association varies by relationship type. METHODS: In 2011, we conducted a survey among 325 Swazi FSWs using respondent-driven sampling. Each woman reported on condom use during sexual activity in the past month with up to 3 partner types (new clients, regular clients, noncommercial partners). We used a generalized est…
