Noninfectious exudative conjunctivitis can be experimentally produced in rabbits by application of the apoptogenic bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan, muramyl dipeptide (MDP) to the ocular surface. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute conjunctival cytopathology induced by unilateral ocular surface exposure to MDP. Hematoxylin and eosin staining assessed bilateral tear cytopathology and conjunctival histopathology. The caspases levels in conjunctival tissue and tears were measured in standard assays utilizing p-nitroanaline tagged caspase-specific substrates. Immunofluorescent

INTRODUCTION: The eye consists of both internal and external compartments. Several variables, including microbes, dust, and high temperatures can cause eye illnesses that can result in blindness. Bacterial eye infections continue to be a major cause of ocular morbidity and blindness, and their prevalence is periodically rising. The objective of the study was to detect bacterial pathogens and assess their susceptibility profiles to antibiotics in the ophthalmology unit of Boru-meda Hospital in Dessie, Ethiopia.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 1 to Ap

House finches in much of the continental United States experience annual epidemics of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis, caused by the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). Although evidence suggests that natural infections typically begin unilaterally, experimental inoculations of songbirds with MG to date have all been administered bilaterally. Furthermore, studies of free-living finches find more severe clinical signs of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in left versus right eyes, but the mechanisms underlying this side bias remain unknown. Here, we characterized unilateral inoculation of hou

The patient with a red eye constitutes a very common clinical problem encountered in the Emergency Department setting. Conjunctivitis, the most common cause of the red eye, generally is not associated with disturbance of vision or associated ocular pain. If either of these symptoms is present, a more serious disorder must be suspected. Treatment of infectious conjunctivitis is guided by interpretation of a Gram's stain and subsequent culture of any exudate present. Initial treatment of most cases includes use of topical antibiotic and local comfort measures. Complications of infectious conjunc

Conjunctivitis is a frequent reason for consulting a doctor. Most often treatment consist of antibiotics, even though sensitive bacteria are only rarely demonstrated. In our part of the world conjunctivitis is self-limiting, and it may be worth considering the effect of treatment, if any. With this in mind, diagnosis and differential diagnoses are reviewed, and with regard to treatment distinctions are made between neonatal conjunctivitis (gonococcus, chlamydia, virus), conjunctivitis in children (symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections), and conjunctivitis in adults and the elderly (dr

A 28-year-old man presented to our clinic over the course of 3 weeks with symptoms that progressed from mild headaches to fever, fatigue, myalgia and an enlarged right preauricular lymph node with ipsilateral conjunctivitis and upper eyelid weakness. Our differential included Epstein Barr Virus/Cytomegalovirus mononucleosis, bacterial conjunctivitis and lymphoma. We evaluated with CBC, EBV IgM Ab, lactate dehydrogenase level and a CMV IgG Ab which were all within normal limits. During his third visit, we discovered our patient had been scratched by two stray kittens he had adopted 2 months pri

The aim of the study was to prepare chloramphenicol (CAM)-loaded transfersomes to enhance drug permeability following topical administration, considering the final goal of treating conjunctivitis by applying the formulation onto the eyelid. The CAM-loaded transfersomes obtained have an average particle size of approximately 120 nm, are monodispersed with polydispersity index < 0.1, and exhibit high encapsulation efficiency (84 ± 5.5%). The formulation showed vesicle deformability, good biocompatibility and enhanced skin permeation compared to a conventional ophthalmic formulation of the antibi

Adenoviral conjunctivitis comprises a large number of physician office visits in the United States and places a great financial burden on health care. It is estimated that the incidence of adenovirus infection to be as high as 20 million cases per year in the United States. There are multiple adenovirus serotypes, each associated with different types and severity of infection. Ocular manifestations of adenovirus include epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, pharyngoconjunctival fever, and nonspecific conjunctivitis. Adenoviral conjunctivitis is primarily a clinical diagnosis. Laboratory diagnosis is

AIMS: To report circulating and mucosa-deposited anti-basement membrane zone autoantibodies in a series of six ectodermal dysplasia patients with severe bilateral cicatrising conjunctivitis and blindness due to both corneal disease and intractable surface inflammation. We also report clinical improvement with steroid-sparing systemic immunosuppression combined with clearance of bacterial colonisation.
METHODS: Conjunctival and buccal immunohistopathology, and serological analysis using a panel of epithelial basement membrane zone proteins including the bullous pemphigoid antigen 180 (BP180) w

INTRODUCTION: Adenovirus serotype 4a is a respiratory virus that occasionally causes conjunctivitis. This paper describes an outbreak of follicular conjunctivitis that occurred in a geriatric centre.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Outbreak description and epidemiological research through a survey. For the microbiological study conjunctival swabs were collected using viral and bacterial transport media. Adenovirus was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The serotype was determined by sequencing of a fragment of the hexon and E1 genes.
RESULTS: In autumn 2008 an outbreak of follicular conj

Measles, caused by the Morbilli virus, is a highly (about 95 %) contagious disease affecting primarily children, but without proper immunisation, adults can also be infected. The leading symptoms of the disease are high fever that presents after an incubation period of 9-10 days and the red rash that begins several days after the fever starts. Beyond specific generalized symptoms, measles may have ocular symptoms. The most commonly occurring conjunctivitis, the so-called "red eye symptom", is not characteristic only for measles infection, however, by taking the generalized symptoms it can sugg

OBJECTIVE: To review the etiology, clinical features and management of acute infectious conjunctivitis in children after the newborn period.
DATA SOURCES: Articles obtained from MEDLINE published before March 2000.
DATA SELECTION AND EXTRACTION: Representative articles on the etiology and clinical features were selected. Twenty-four clinical trials were also selected. From these articles, the main findings from three placebo controlled trials and two comparative clinical trials involving children are summarized in detail. The main findings from 19 comparative clinical trials in adults are br

Among surveyed households, the transmission rate of pediatric conjunctivitis was 12%. Rates did not differ when the index child did or did not use an ophthalmic antibiotic (14% vs 11% [P = 0.6]). Transmission rates were lower than for other infections where children are not routinely excluded from school or daycare.

Meningococcal conjunctivitis is a rare but important infection since it can lead to severe complications and can threaten public health. It may emerge in two forms, either primary or secondary type which is developed after a systemic infection. Accurate diagnosis of primary meningococcal conjunctivitis is very important in addition to ocular complications which can result in loss of vision, the condition can also lead to severe complications like systemic meningococcal disease. However, the lack of specific symptoms which can distinguish meningococcal conjunctivitis from other forms of bacteri

Since infestation of the eyelashes by pubic lice is relatively uncommon, it might well be misdiagnosed as bacterial conjunctivitis, allergic contact dermatitis, or seborrheic and rosacea blepharitis. We present and graphically illustrate a case of blepharoconjunctivits attributed to P. Pubis infestation and offer further support for the use of the ophthalmologic agent 4 percent pilocarpine gel as a primary or adjunctive treatment modality.
