Effect of probiotic supplement on improvement of depressive symptoms in patients with substance-induced depressive disorder: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance-Induced Depressive Disorder (SIDD) accounts for a high health burden and requires new therapies. Bidirectional communications between the gut and the brain mediated by the microbiota point to a possible influence of probiotics as a tool for preserving mental health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial on a sample of 40 patients with SIDD. Patients were then randomly assigned into probiotic and placebo arms and underwent interventions for four continuous weeks. The clinical assessment was done using BDI and HAM-A. Immunologic

Adapting mHealth Interventions to Improve Self-Management of HIV and Reduce Substance Use Among Emerging Adults in Zambia: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected by the HIV epidemic, with Zambia experiencing a substantial burden of disease. Young people with HIV are disproportionately impacted. Emerging adulthood (ages 18-24 years) is characterized by increasing independence, risk-taking behaviors, identity exploration, and changing social supports, all of which may impact HIV self-management, including medication adherence and retention in care. Substance use may further undermine HIV outcomes. Innovative interventions targeting HIV self-management and substance use reduction among Zambia

Integrative cognitive neuropsychological program emphasizing brain response to enhance inhibitory control among substance abusers at the alternative rehabilitation communities in Eastern Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Inhibitory control (IC) deficit among substance abusers is a potential consequence of detrimental drug use and can also serve as a risk factor for drug-seeking behaviors, compromising substance abuse treatment and leading to drug relapse. This study examined the efficacy of an integrative cognitive neuropsychological program emphasizing brain response to enhance inhibitory control (ICNIC intervention program) among substance abusers. METHODS: A total of 30 substance abusers were recruited and randomly assigned to either an ICNIC training group and a non-training control group. T

Circulating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and liver cancer risk: a nested case-control analysis of individual participant data from 12 prospective cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been associated with numerous deleterious health outcomes including liver damage. However, whether exposure to PFAS is associated with liver cancer risk remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a matched nested case-control study among 12 prospective cohort studies located in the United States. Pre-diagnostic PFAS, namely perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS), were measured from blood samples among 853 individuals who developed liver cancer and 853 matched control participants.

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Potential Efficacy of a Self-Guided Internet-Delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intervention for Substance Use Disorders: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People with alcohol and substance use disorders (SUDs) often have underlying difficulties in regulating emotions. Although dialectical behavioral therapy is effective for SUDs, it is often difficult to access. Self-guided, internet-delivered dialectical behavioral therapy (iDBT) allows for expanded availability, but few studies have rigorously evaluated it in individuals with SUDs. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy of an iDBT intervention in treatment-seeking adults with SUDs. We hypothesized that iDBT would be feasible, credible

Effect of a selective personality-targeted prevention program on 7-year illicit substance related outcomes: A secondary analysis of a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the efficacy of the selective personality-targeted PreVenture program in reducing cannabis and stimulant use over a 7-year period spanning adolescence and early adulthood. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in 14 Australian schools. Schools were randomized to PreVenture, a brief personality-targeted selective intervention, comprising two 90-minute facilitator-led sessions delivered one week apart, or a control group (health education as usual). Only students who scored highly on one of four personality traits (anxiety sensitivity, neg

Association of Substance Use With Behavioral Adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines for COVID-19 Mitigation: Cross-sectional Web-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is a risk factor for COVID-19 infection and adverse outcomes. However, reasons for elevated risk for COVID-19 in substance users are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether alcohol or other drug use is associated with adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for COVID-19 mitigation. Preregistered analyses tested the hypothesis that greater use of alcohol and other drugs would be associated with lower CDC guideline adherence. A secondary objective was to determine whether substance use was associate

Prescribing patterns before and after a non-fatal drug overdose using Tennessee's controlled substance monitoring database linked to hospital discharge data.

We performed a statewide evaluation of prescribing patterns of controlled substances (CS) before and after an overdose, using Tennessee's Hospital Discharge Data System and the Controlled Substance Monitoring Database (CSMD). Adults' first non-fatal overdose discharges either from the emergency department (ED) or inpatient (IP) stay occurring between 2013 and 2016 were linked to prescriptions in the CSMD. The difference in the proportion of patients filling a prescription before versus after an overdose was calculated. Included were 49,398 patients with an overdose and a prescription record; m

The effect of sertraline and environmental context on treating depression and illicit substance use among methadone maintained opiate dependent patients: a controlled clinical trial.

Psychiatric comorbidity, particularly depressive disorders, is associated with continued substance use and poor social functioning among methadone maintained patients. Evidence suggests similar neurochemical and environmental pathways may link the two disorders and it is reasonable to hypothesize that pharmacological and environmental factors play important roles in the treating comorbid depression and substance use. The present study tested the efficacy of sertraline for treating syndromally defined depressive disorders among non-abstinent methadone maintained opiate dependent patients. The m

Temporal sequencing of symptom change in youth receiving treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use: secondary findings from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) frequently co-occur in youth. Integrated, trauma-focused treatments are recommended, but evidence in youth is limited and the dynamics of symptom change are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: We investigated within-treatment changes in PTSD and substance use, and their temporal sequencing, in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing integrated treatment with supportive counselling among youth aged 13-25 years. METHOD: Participants (n = 55) were randomised to an integrated, exposure-based treatment, Concurrent

Just-in-Time Adaptive Intervention to Improve HIV Prevention and Substance Use in Youth Experiencing Homelessness (MY-RIDE): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth who are experiencing homelessness face a higher risk of HIV infection compared to their housed peers, and suicide and overdose remain the leading causes of death among homeless youth. Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) are gaining momentum for HIV prevention and substance use research. Yet, most interventions for homeless youth have not addressed modifiable real-time factors. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the development and implementation of a randomized attention-controlled trial to assess the efficacy of motivating youth to reduce infections, disconnections, a

Soccer and Vocational Training are Ineffective Delivery Strategies to Prevent HIV and Substance Abuse by Young, South African Men: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

HIV and substance abuse are common among young men, associated with a cluster of risk behaviors. Yet, most services addressing these challenges are delivered in setting underutilized by men and are often inconsistent with male identity. This cluster randomized controlled trial aimed to reduce multiple risk behaviors found among young men township areas on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. Young men aged 18-29 years (N = 1193) across 27 neighborhoods were randomized by area to receive HIV-related skills training during either: (1) a 12-month soccer league (SL) intervention; (2) 6-month

Quality control of psychoactive substances in human breastmilk samples from a human milk bank by disposable pipette extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The lack of data regarding infant exposure to drugs of abuse consumed by lactating mothers has become a major health concern. Investigating psychoactive substances and their metabolites in breastmilk is an analytical approach to estimate the rate at which drugs of abuse are excreted and how much infants are exposed to them. In this study, we have developed and validated a GC-MS method using disposable pipette tips for simultaneously extracting ten analytes from breastmilk samples obtained from a milk bank in the city of Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. All the 67 analyzed samples tested negative for al

Patterns and effects of social integration on housing stability, mental health and substance use outcomes among participants in a randomized controlled Housing First trial.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has shown that social integration, involving community integration and social support, can be protective resources for the health of homeless individuals. However, it is not clear how social integration affects health in the transition from homelessness into housing, and subsequent housing retention. This paper examines, through mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, how social integration changes over time, and how these changes relate to housing stability, substance use and mental health outcomes among a sample of homeless individuals experiencing mental il
