[Hyponatremia and convulsions in the postoperative period in children].

Four children undergoing surgery presented with seizures and hyponatremia 12 hours after anesthesia. One child died with cerebral oedema, the others recovered. The respective roles of hypo-osmolar perfusions and ADH secretion are discussed. Ionogram before surgery, supervision of weight and diuresis and correct fluid management should prevent these postoperative complications.

Complex segregation analysis of febrile convulsions.

Complex segregation analysis was performed on 467 nuclear families ascertained through febrile-convulsion probands. The probands were identified as having their first febrile convulsion while residents of Rochester, MN, during the years 1935-64. Parents and first- and second-degree relatives of probands were identified through the Olmsted County, MN, record-linkage system. Diagnoses of convulsive activity were made from review of medical records. The genetic models investigated included both single-major-locus and polygenic models, with likelihoods computed jointly on children and parents as w

Convulsant action of naloxone in the rat amygdala.

Increasing doses of naloxone hydrochloride (100-1000 nmol) were micro-injected unilaterally into the rat amygdala and the behavioral, neuropathological and electrographic responses were studied. Microinjections of low doses of naloxone (100-250 nmol) produced staring, gustatory automatisms and wet shakes whereas higher doses additionally resulted in motor limbic seizures and status epilepticus. The electroencephalogram showed a sequence of alterations characterised by high voltage fast activity, spiking, bursts of polyspiking, electrographic seizures and postictal depression which first appear

Serum immunoglobulin concentrations in febrile convulsions.

The mean, age adjusted, serum IgA values of 47 children with febrile convulsions were almost identical to those of controls. Five children had serum IgA values less than 0.1 g/l by nephelometry, suggesting that in some cases at least there may be an association between a low serum IgA concentration and febrile convulsions.

Intermittent treatment of febrile convulsions with nitrazepam.

Intermittent oral or rectal administration of diazepam for the prophylactic treatment of febrile convulsions has given results comparable to the continuous use of phenobarbital while limiting side effects and risks of toxicity. Since we believe that nitrazepam is a better anticonvulsant than diazepam, we performed a study to evaluate the effectiveness of this medication in the prophylactic treatment of febrile convulsions. Nitrazepam was given only when the children had fever and almost exclusively in children with a high risk of recurrence (less than 12 months of age at first convulsion; atyp

Possible mechanism of digoxin-induced convulsions.

Intraventricular (IVT) administration of digoxin (7.5 micrograms) induced 'popcorn-type' convulsions in rats. Though the convulsions looked similar to morphine-induced seizures, naloxone failed to antagonize these effects. Other anticonvulsants like phenobarbitone, ethosuximide, or GABAergic substances like piracetam and semicarbazide also had no protective effect against digoxin-induced convulsions. While calcium chloride potentiated these effects of digoxin, phenytoin, magnesium chloride, and potassium chloride treatment showed blocking actions. These observations suggest the involvement of …

Febrile convulsions and later development of epilepsy.

A group of 172 epileptic children who had had prior febrile convulsions was compared with a group of 674 who had not. Children with epilepsy and prior febrile convulsions were similar in some respects (sex ratio, positive family history for seizures) to children with pure febrile convulsions and in most respects (type of epilepsy, mental status, initial EEG, and two- and four-year remission rates in the long-term outcome) to epileptic children without prior febrile convulsions. Our data do not support the current view that febrile convulsions, per se, are the main cause of mesial temporal scle

Occult pneumococcal bacteraemia and febrile convulsions.

Over two years 29 children had bacteraemia due to Streptococcus pneumoniae at this hospital. In 15 previously healthy children the site of infection could not be identified, and in most of them, bacteraemia was not suspected clinically. All 15 had high total white cell (greater than or equal to 17 x 10(9)/1) and neutrophil (greater than or equal to 11 x 10(9)/1) counts. Twelve children were under 4 years of age, and of these, 10 had been admitted because of a simple febrile convulsion and one had a prolonged febrile convulsion. Occult pneumococcal bacteraemia has been reported in the USA for m
