Specific IgA and sIgA antibodies were studied in the sera of patients suffering from various intestinal diseases (dysentery, salmonellosis, typhoid fever, chronic typhoid carrier state) and in the sera of healthy persons immunized by parenteral route with typhoid alcohol vaccine. The nature of antibodies was identified in Coombs' test, using monospecific antisera to alpha-chain and to the secretory component. IgA and sIgA antibodies were revealed most frequently in the sera of dysentery patients and of chronic typhoid carriers. No sIgA antibodies were found in the sera of subcutaneously immuni

Development of the Coombs test has led to rapid progress in the recognition of various autoimmune hemolytic anemias. Cold agglutinin disease, a relatively rare disorder, occurs in idiopathic and secondary forms, the latter often in association with diseases that alter the immune status. The higher the titer of cold agglutinin, the greater is the thermal range of its activity. One of the characteristic clinical manifestations of the disease is striking cyanosis in acral areas on exposure to cold, which abates quickly on warming. This parallels the accelerated hemolysis at cold temperatures, whi…

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia was diagnosed in eight horses on the basis of a positive Coomb's test. The disease was considered to be idiopathic in three cases and secondary to another condition in five. The clinical signs included dullness and depression, pyrexia, jaundice and haemoglobinuria. In addition to anaemia, haematological evaluation commonly revealed auto-agglutination of red cells and anisocytosis; reticulocytosis and an increased mean corpuscular volume were less commonly observed. Four horses were successfully treated with dexamethasone, but the other four were destroyed or died

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the grades of positivity of the direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and their effects on the duration of phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. DAT reactions of blood samples were graded as (1+), (2+), (3+) and (4+). DAT was positive in 80 neonates who were exposed to phototherapy due to jaundice. Patients with positive DAT reactions are classified in the study as follows: 34 newborns were DAT (1+), 18 newborns were DAT (2+), 16 newborns were DAT (3+) and 12 newborns were DAT (4+). We found that higher grades of positivity of DAT are a

OBJECTIVE: It is stated that the direct antiglobulin (Coombs') test (DAT) may be negative in ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn. Thus, significant jaundice in neonates who are A-B incompatible with their mothers but DAT test negative is often attributed to isoimmunization and another diagnosis is not sought. We wished to determine the rate of bilirubin production, as an objective measure of hemolysis, in 2 groups of DAT-negative neonates--ABO-compatible and ABO-incompatible--and in DAT-positive ABO-incompatible neonates.
METHODS: In consecutive, term, healthy newborns who were admitted to t

An 18 years follow-up study of 55 males with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia born in 1962/63 was done at the military draft board examinations in 1981. The medical and psychological tests were compared to the tests of the total cohort of Norwegian conscripts. Of those examined at 18 years of age 7.3% was unfit for military service, compared to 6.2% in the total cohort. Ten organ systems were clinically examined with no significantly increased frequency of unfitness among the index cases. Intelligence testing was done on 39 of the studied subjects, the mean score being the same as in the total coho

OBJECTIVES: Clinical practice guidelines have recognized "Asian" and "East Asian" as risk factors for newborn jaundice and readmission. We sought to identify more detailed and specific, parent-identified races or ethnicities associated with jaundice readmission.
METHODS: We conducted a case control study of 653 newborn infants born (2014-2016) at a West-Coast, urban hospital to examine specific parent-described races or ethnicities that are associated with newborn hospital readmissions for hyperbilirubinemia. Parent-reported race or ethnicity was abstracted from the California Newborn Screeni

Autoimmune hemolytic anaemias (AIHAs) represent different subtypes of a rare autoimmune disease in which autoantibodies targeting autoantigens expressed on autologous red blood cells' (RBCs) membrane are produced, leading to their accelerated destruction. In the presence of hemolytic anaemia, the direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is the cornerstone of AIHA diagnosis. AIHAs are classified according to the isotype and the thermal optimum of the autoantibody, into warm (wAIHAs), cold and mixed AIHAs. wAIHAs, by far the most frequent type of AIHAs, are associated with underlying conditions in ∼50% of

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is a rare, heterogeneous condition that poses diagnostic challenges, especially in direct antiglobulin test (DAT)-negative cases, where the absence of detectable autoantibodies complicates diagnosis. We report a case of a male patient in his late 60s diagnosed with a rare subtype of IgA-mediated, DAT-negative AIHA. The patient presented with painless jaundice, pruritus and laboratory evidence of haemolysis, including anaemia, reticulocytosis, elevated unconjugated bilirubin, increased lactate dehydrogenase and decreased haptoglobins. Initial and repeated st

BACKGROUND: Several autoimmune disorders have been reported to be related with COVID infection. In continuation to these autoimmune phenomenon, autoimmune hemolytic anaemia (AIHA) also has been noted in COVID infected patients. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of red cell alloimmunization, ABO discrepancy and positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) results in COVID infected patients hospitalised in a tertiary care centre in North India.
METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective observational study done from July 2020 to June 2021. All symptomatic patients admitted to ICU tested

OBJECTIVE: We analyze phototherapy rates after implementation of a Hyperbilirubinemia Clinical Pathway (HCP), which placed full-term ABOi DAT negative newborns on the low risk phototherapy nomogram, rather than medium risk, as previously done.
STUDY DESIGN: A chart review was performed for ABOi newborns born ≥36 weeks gestation between January 2020 and October 2021. Primary outcome measures were rates of phototherapy across pre- and post-intervention groups and among DAT negative newborns.
RESULTS: There was an increased proportion of newborns assigned to the low risk curve after the interve

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare acquired hematopoietic stem cell disease that may lead to weakness and death of patients, if unrecognized and untreated. Although consensus guidelines were reviewed recently for the diagnostic screening of PNH with multi-parameter flow cytometry (FCM), until now, no study has investigated the efficiency of such clinical indications in older patients.
METHODS: Overall, 20 centers participated in the study and a total of 1,689 patients were included, 313 of whom were at geriatric age and 1,376 were aged 18 - 64 years. We evaluated t

Various low ionic strength diluents are used routinely for red cell alloantibody detection in the antiglobulin test to increase the rate of antibody association to antigen, thereby allowing a reduction in the incubation time while achieving optimal agglutination. Two commercial low ionic strength diluents (DiaMed ID-CellStab and Inverclyde LISS) were assessed using the DiaMed-ID LISS Coombs' microtube column system, to assess whether or not the choice of diluent influences red cell antibody detection. Effects of two low ionic strength diluents after 15-min incubation were assessed in 150 sampl

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia is a rare cause of hemolytic anemia.
CASE RECORD: A 68-year-old male patient developed an acute intravascular hemolysis with acute renal failure. Common causes of hemolysis were ruled out and the patient rapidly improved. An immune mechanism was confirmed by the positivity of the direct antiglobulin test with anti-IgA in the presence of ambroxol only, one of the drug the patient had received during 6 days before hospitalization.
DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, this is the first report of ambroxol-induced immune hemolytic anemia. This case also

A case of direct antiglobulin test(DAT)-negative autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) associated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is presented. A 54-year-old female was admitted with liver dysfunction and anemia. AIH was diagnosed based on the diagnostic criteria of the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group. The patient was DAT-negative, and exhibited all the clinical features of warm type AIHA and elevated levels of red blood cell-associated IgG. Marked improvement of subjective symptoms, the return to normal of hematological and liver test values, and a decrease in the level of RBC-associate

A series of comparative investigations was carried out for establishing the value of the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) in its first phase. The results showed that PEG, in relation to NaCl solution of low ionic strength, increased the reactivity of various antibodies of different specificity present in 72 studied sera. A significant superiority of IAT-PEG to IAT-BISS was noted in 45.8% of these sera. In search for antibodies in sera of 1160 patients IAT-PEG detected 7 antibodies not reacting in the IAT-LISS, and 5 of them had Rh system specificity, one was anti-K and one anti-Jka. Although t

To the diagnostics of the idiopathic thrombopenia caused by autoantibodies belong: 1. the clinical findings such as type of haemorrhage and the controls of the capillary function. 2. the proof of antibodies, in which case positive findings are proving, but negative ones do not exclude the immune thrombopenia, 3. smear of the sternal marrow with judgment of the megakaryocytes and formation of thrombocytes, 4. isotopic control of the survival time of the thrombocytes, which is reserved to special insitutions. As therapy essentially three forms have developed: 1. Therapy with glucocorticoids, 2.
