Increasing returns to scale: The solution to the second-order social dilemma.

Humans benefit from extensive cooperation; however, the existence of free-riders may cause cooperation to collapse. This is called the social dilemma. It has been shown that punishing free-riders is an effective way of resolving this problem. Because punishment is costly, this gives rise to the second-order social dilemma. Without exception, existing solutions rely on some stringent assumptions. This paper proposes, under very mild conditions, a simple model of a public goods game featuring increasing returns to scale. We find that punishers stand out and even dominate the population provided

Advances toward evidence-based practice: where to from here?

Evidence-based practice has a long history; however, attempts to bridge the gap between science and practice have been only partially effective and much work remains to be done. Part of the problem has been the unilateral approach associated with dissemination of research findings to clinical practitioners. In this special series, Goldfried and colleagues (2014--this issue) suggest a two-way bridge, in which practitioners are afforded the opportunity to disseminate their rich clinical experiences to researchers as well. In this manner, a more collaborative working relationship is espoused. Sur

TV programs that denounce unfair advantage impact women's sensitivity to defection in the public goods game.

We explore the neural underpinnings of gender differences in cooperation and their modulation by intensive media watching. We compared cooperative decisions and electroencephalograph data between genders from who participated in repeated rounds of the public goods game (PGG) and investigated within groups changes that occurred after watching a TV program known as "investigative reporting" that denounces unfair advantages taken by free-riders against the public. Women tended to be more cooperative than men during early rounds of PGG, mostly because they react differently to the defection of oth

Emergence of responsible sanctions without second order free riders, antisocial punishment or spite.

While empirical evidence highlights the importance of punishment for cooperation in collective action, it remains disputed how responsible sanctions targeted predominantly at uncooperative subjects can evolve. Punishment is costly; in order to spread it typically requires local interactions, voluntary participation, or rewards. Moreover, theory and experiments indicate that some subjects abuse sanctioning opportunities by engaging in antisocial punishment (which harms cooperators), spiteful acts (harming everyone) or revenge (as a response to being punished). These arguments have led to the co

Why Should I? Examining How Childhood Callous-Unemotional Traits Relate to Prosocial and Affiliative Behaviors and Motivations.

Childhood callous-unemotional (CU) traits are characterized by low empathy, limited prosocial behavior, and restricted social affiliation. However, few studies have investigated whether CU traits are associated with different subtypes of prosocial and affiliative behavior or the specific motivational difficulties underlying these behaviors. We addressed these questions using data from 135 young children (M = 5.48 years old; 58% female) who viewed depictions of adults or children in instrumental need, emotional need, or neutral situations. We assessed recognition, suggested initiation of, and m

Gratitude and pride in intergroup cooperation: Differentiated neural patterns revealed by fNIRS hyperscanning.

Intergroup cooperation helps reduce intergroup prejudice and improve intergroup relations. Positive emotions with important social functions may contribute to intergroup cooperation. Gratitude and pride are two such emotions that differ in their appraisal priorities: gratitude places relatively greater emphasis on external support and interpersonal relationships, whereas pride is more closely associated with personal achievement and competence. Across two studies involving female Chinese university students, we combined behavioral measures with fNIRS hyperscanning to examine gratitude and prid

Collaboration in cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Collaborative empiricism, which involves a systemic process of therapist and patient working together to establish common goals in treatment, has been found to be one of the primary change agents in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This article focuses on the development of a therapeutic relationship and implementation of collaborative empiricism along with the elements that lead to success in treatment. This method is used to uncover patients' automatic thoughts and underlying beliefs in treating an array of emotional and behavioral disorders. The role of the therapist is discussed in deve

The singer or the singing: who sings individually to persons with dementia and what are the effects?

''В реальном времени'' singing to persons with dementia (PWDs) may be an underused but highly accessible resource for their caregivers, regardless of qualifications. A systematic literature review sought to illuminate who sings to PWDs, and with what objectives and effects, to address the question of whether it is the singer or the singing which is effective. The literature revealed that music therapists seek to address cognitive, behavioral, physiological, and social factors through one-to-one singing, whereas other caregivers are more broadly concerned with quality of life, often through facilitating acti

Collective violence: comparisons between youths and chimpanzees.

Patterns of collective violence found among humans include similarities to those seen among chimpanzees. These include participation predominantly by males, an intense personal and group concern with status, variable subgroup composition, defense of group integrity, inter-group fights that include surprise attacks, and a tendency to avoid mass confrontation. Compared to chimpanzee communities, youth gangs tend to be larger, composed of younger individuals, occupying smaller territories and having a more complex organization. Youth gangs also differ from chimpanzee communities as a result of nu

Noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation.

Literature pertaining to noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation was reviewed. Noncompliant behavior was considered in terms of antecedents (characteristics of instructions), behaviors (characteristics of tasks being refused), and consequences (environmental results of noncompliance). Literature pertaining to nondisabled "oppositional" children was incorporated along with literature pertaining to persons with mental retardation. Research involving antecedent conditions suggested that noncompliance is more likely when instructions are vague and interrupted with other instruction

Cooperative conformational transitions in macromolecules under mechanical stretching: Exact solution and validation of a two-state model against single-molecule experiments.

The stretching behavior of linear macromolecules undergoing conformational transitions is investigated using a two-state Ising-like model capable of describing the mechanical response of polymers with widely varying structures and compositions. This minimal framework incorporates the essential parameters governing such transitions: two characteristic lengths, two elastic force constants, a free-energy difference between states, and a nearest-neighbor interaction energy that accounts for cooperativity. Chain stiffness is introduced through a bending potential. In the long-chain limit, exact equ

Children with autism spectrum disorder perform comparably to their peers in a parent-child cooperation task.

This study investigates whether and how parent's cooperation affects child's cooperation, and whether that differs between children with/without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The experiment involved a cooperative key-pressing task completed first by parent-parent dyads and then by parent-child dyads, meanwhile brain activity in the right frontal-parietal cortex of dyad partners was measured synchronously. The results showed the following: ASD children exhibited performance comparable to those of their peers, as was the level of brain synchronization with their parents, which was mainly due t

Distinct neurexin isoforms cooperate to initiate and maintain foraging activity.

Neurexins are synaptic adhesion molecules that play diverse roles in synaptic development, function, maintenance, and plasticity. Neurexin genes have been associated with changes in human behavior, where variants in NRXN1 are associated with autism, schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome. While NRXN1, NRXN2, and NRXN3 all encode major α and β isoforms, NRXN1 uniquely encodes a γ isoform, for which mechanistic roles in behavior have yet to be defined. Here, we show that both α and γ isoforms of neurexin/nrx-1 are required for the C. elegans behavioral response to food deprivation, a sustained per

Evaluating the implementation of integrated knowledge translation in a multi-country research consortium in Sub-Saharan Africa - a mixed methods comparative case study.

BACKGROUND: Integrated knowledge translation (IKT) is an approach facilitating collaboration between researchers and decision-makers towards evidence-informed decision-making. Increasingly evaluated in various contexts, less is known about the implementation process of IKT, including in low- and middle-income countries. The Collaboration for Evidence-based Healthcare and Public Health in Africa (CEBHA+) developed, implemented and evaluated an IKT approach across five countries. Here, we examined how the IKT approach was implemented in the African-German multi-country research consortium, inves

Consulting communities on feedback of genetic findings in international health research: sharing sickle cell disease and carrier information in coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: International health research in malaria-endemic settings may include screening for sickle cell disease, given the relationship between this important genetic condition and resistance to malaria, generating questions about whether and how findings should be disclosed. The literature on disclosing genetic findings in the context of research highlights the role of community consultation in understanding and balancing ethically important issues from participants' perspectives, including social forms of benefit and harm, and the influence of access to care. To inform research practice
