Mega-corpus callosum, polymicrogyria, and psychomotor retardation syndrome.

We describe two children from a consanguineous family who manifested mega-corpus callosum, polymicrogyria, and psychomotor retardation. These patients also exhibited the brain anomalies of pontine hypoplasia and an abnormal cerebellar vermis. Our report confirms the genetic nature of megalencephaly-polymicrogyria-mega-corpus callosum syndrome, suggests a possible autosomal-recessive inheritance, and expands the spectrum of this rare entity.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia associated with thin corpus callosum.

Autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia (AR-HSP) associated with thin corpus callosum was recently described in Japan, and most families were linked to chromosome 15 q13-15. We report two patients from two different Brazilian families with progressive gait disturbance starting at the second decade of life, spastic paraparesis, and mental deterioration. One patient presented cerebellar ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head of both patients showed a thin corpus callosum. AR-HSP with a thin corpus callosum is a rare disorder, mainly described in Japanese patients. We foun…

Isolated Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum in a Four-Year-Old: A Case of Preserved Cognitive Function Despite Complete Corpus Callosum Absence.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a rare congenital brain anomaly characterized by the partial or complete absence of the corpus callosum, a crucial structure responsible for interhemispheric communication. Neurological outcomes associated with AgCC vary widely, with presentation ranging from severe intellectual disabilities to normal cognitive function. The condition is often discovered incidentally due to the variability in its clinical presentation. This report discusses the case of a four-year-old Saudi boy with incidental AgCC identified following a minor head trauma. The patient …

Corpus Callosum Diffusion Restriction in Neonatal Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy.

Congenital myotonic dystrophy (CDM) is the most severe form of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), typically presenting in the neonatal period with hypotonia, respiratory distress, and feeding difficulties. Neuroimaging findings in neonates with CDM are rarely described. We present a genetically confirmed case of CDM in a neonate who demonstrated restricted diffusion in the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum (CC). The patient developed respiratory failure at three weeks of age and required mechanical ventilation. The brain MRI performed 11 days after onset revealed restricted diffusion in t…

Corpus Callosum-Mediated Interhemispheric Interactions in Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy.

PURPOSE: The corpus callosum is crucial for interhemispheric interactions in the motor control of limb functions. Human and animal studies suggested spinal cord pathologies may induce cortical reorganization in sensorimotor areas. We investigate participation of the corpus callosum in executions of a simple motor task in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) using transcranial magnetic stimulation. METHODS: Twenty patients with CSM with various MRI grades of severity of cord compression were compared with 19 normal controls. Ipsilateral silent period, contralateral silent period…

Corpus Callosum Swelling after Resection of Intraventricular Central Neurocytoma.

Corpus callosum swelling has been reported to occur after ventriculoperitoneal shunting for long-standing hydrocephalus. This report presents a case of corpus callosum swelling after intraventricular tumor resection. A 34-year-old woman presented with a headache that worsened over 1 month. Magnetic resonance (MR) images revealed a mass lesion in the left lateral ventricle and obstructive hydrocephalus. She underwent subtotal resection with a transcallosal approach. After tumor resection, she had long-lasting status epilepticus followed by consciousness disturbance. T2-weighted MR images obtain…

Microstructure of the Corpus Callosum Long after Pediatric Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: The long-term effects of pediatric concussion on white matter microstructure are poorly understood. This study investigated long-term changes in white matter diffusion properties of the corpus callosum in youth several years after concussion. METHODS: Participants were 8-19 years old with a history of concussion (n = 36) or orthopedic injury (OI) (n = 21). Mean time since injury for the sample was 2.6 years (SD = 1.6). Participants underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, completed cognitive testing, and rated their post-concussion symptoms. Measures of diffusivity (fraction…

A new method for evaluating short fetal corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: Sonographic diagnosis of short corpus callosum (SCC) is based on measurement of a short for gestational age antero-posterior length of the corpus callosum (CC) in the midsagittal plane. We suggest a new method for evaluating SCC without referring to biometry tables. METHODS: We measured the ratio between the CC length and the internal cranial occipitofrontal dimension (ICOFD) in the midsagittal plane in 399 normal fetuses at 20 + 6 to 35 + 3 weeks of gestation and in 31 fetuses with a diagnosis of a SCC and compared the mean ratio between two groups. The impact of cephalic biometri…

[Behavioral and cognitive profile of corpus callosum agenesia - Review].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Agenesis of corpus callosum is a relatively frequent congenital cerebral malformation including dysplasia, total or partial absence of corpus callosum. The agenesis of corpus callosum can be occured in isolated form without accompanying somatic or central nervous system abnormalities and it can be associated with other central nervus system malformations. The behavioral and cognitive outcome is more favorable for patients with isolated agenesis of corpus callous than syndromic form of corpus callosum. The aim of this study is to review recent research on behavioral and …

Accelerated corpus callosum development in prematurity predicts improved outcome.

OBJECTIVES: To determine: (1) whether corpus callosum (CC) size and microstructure at 7 years of age or their change from infancy to 7 years differed between very preterm (VP) and full-term (FT) children; (2) perinatal predictors of CC size and microstructure at 7 years; and (3) associations between CC measures at 7 years or trajectories from infancy to 7 years and neurodevelopmental outcomes. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: One hundred and thirty-six VP (gestational age [GA] <30 weeks and/or birth weight <1,250 g) and 33 FT children had usable magnetic resonance images at 7 years of age, and of these, …

Bart's Syndrome Associated Corpus Callosum Agenesis and Choanal Atresia.

Bart's syndrome is defined as congenital localized absence of skin, and associated with epidermolysis bullosa. A newborn with Bart's syndrome is reported because it is a very rare condition, especially when associated with corpus callosum agenesis and concomitant choanal atresia. Clinically it is characterized by raw beefy areas of denuded skin mainly on hands and feet. We report a rare case of a term female newborn born to non-consanguineous parents who presented with congenital absence of skin in, face, trunk and extremities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report presenting …

Microcephaly-thin corpus callosum syndrome maps to 8q23.2-q24.12.

Postnatal microcephaly is defined as normal head circumference at birth, which progressively declines to more than 2 standard deviations below the average for the patient's age and sex. We describe four patients from three consanguineous families of Arab Bedouin origin who presented with autosomal recessive inheritance of progressive microcephaly, spasticity, thin corpus callosum, pyramidal signs, and intellectual disability. Homozygosity mapping (Human Mapping NspI 250K arrays, Affymetrix, Santa Clara, CA) placed the disease locus at 8q23.2-q24.12. The candidate region includes 22 known or pr…

Corpus callosum atrophy in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Several studies have found atrophy of the corpus callosum (CC) in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it remains unclear whether callosal atrophy is already present in the early stages of AD, and to what extent it may be associated with other structural changes in the brain, such as age-related white matter changes (ARWMC) and progression of the disease. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients in the early stages of AD and 50 non-demented elderly subjects with varying degrees of ARWMC were investigated using MRI. The CC was assessed semi-automatically, and ARWMC wer…

[Early onset schizophrenia and partial agenesis of corpus callosum].

We report a case of schizophrenia with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum in a 14-year-old girl. Diagnosis of schizophrenia was confirmed in the longitudinal follow-up and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum was found on brain MRI at the prodromal stage of disease. The prodromal symptom was progressive deterioration of social and academic adjustment in a context of non-specified psychotic disorder in the father. We found no abnormality in the development but a history of seizures that did not require specific treatment. Follow-up at 8 months showed an increase in negative symptoms and…
