A strain of C. parvum, CN6134, known to have antitumour activity, caused thrombosis in the sites where the organism is phagocytosed. It bound to macrophages in vitro and activated the alternate pathway of complement. A strain of C. parvum, CN5888, which fails to show antitumour activity, did not show thrombosis. It did not bind to macrophages or activate guinea-pig complement. It did, however, cause marrow infarction which seems to result from a diminished clearance of the organism from the circulation.

Growth of Corynebacterium renale in vitro on low-iron medium (1.34 micron) was only slightly less than that on high-iron media (7.16 and 9.85 micron). However, studies on C. renale-induced pyelonephritis using the rat as an experimental model revealed that C. renale cultivated in high-iron media was capable of producing pyelonephritis, but when grown on low-iron medium, these bacteria were noninfective. This apparent avirulence of the bacteria cultivated on low levels of iron could be reversed by injecting the rats intramuscularly with ferric ammonium citrate.

We report the first case of airway obstruction due to toxin-producing Corynebacterium ulcerans, successfully managed with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO). A woman aged 73 years who was living with companion animals was intubated for pneumonia of unknown origin and treated with an empirical antimicrobial agent. Clinical relevance, in vitro susceptibility, and length of parenteral antimicrobial drug use were obtained from patient records.
