Soil microbial diversity, stability, and function are enhanced by cover cropping: A machine learning-based pooled analysis of Mississippi agroecosystems.

Cover cropping has emerged as a pivotal strategy to enhance soil health and microbiome functionality across diverse agroecosystems. However, the extent to which cover crops reshape microbial diversity, composition, functional capacity, and ecological stability remains insufficiently understood, particularly within heterogenous environments like Mississippi. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive pooled analysis of 473 soil samples collected from multiple independent cover crop trials (2020-2024) across diverse cropping systems and edaphic contexts in Mississippi. Amplicon sequencing (16S

Enhanced Levels of Combined Waterlogging and Heat Stress Exacerbate Anatomical Damage, Photosynthetic Impairment, and Oxidative Stress in Tomato.

Global climate change increases concurrent waterlogging and heat waves, threatening crop production. Tomato, a widely cultivated vegetable crop, is susceptible to both stresses, but their combined effects on tomato responses remain poorly understood. This study analyzed the anatomical, physiological, and molecular responses of two tomato genotypes, 'NT212' and 'NT606' (sensitive and tolerant to combined waterlogging and heat stresses), under control (C), waterlogging (W), heat stress (H1, H2, and H3) (34/27 °C, 38/31 °C, 42/35 °C), and combined stress (WH1, WH2, and WH3) for 48 h. 'NT212' exhi…

A New Plant Expression System for Producing Pharmaceutical Proteins.

In the past decade, interest in the production of recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in plants has tremendously progressed because plants do not harbor mammalian viruses, are economically competitive, easily scalable, and capable of carrying out complex post-translational modifications required for recombinant pharmaceutical proteins. Mucuna bracteata is an essential perennial cover crop species widely planted as an underground cover in oil palm and rubber plantations. As a legume, they have high biomass, thrive in its habitat, and can fix nitrogen. Thus, M. bracteata is a cost-efficient crop

Geographical determinants and environmental implications of livestock production intensification in Asia.

Under growing and urbanizing demand, livestock production is rapidly evolving in South, East and South-east Asia, with both an increase of production and a shift to intensive production systems. These changes infer impacts on the environment, on public health and on rural development. Environmental impacts are mainly associated with a mismanagement of animal excreta, leading to pollution of surface water, ground water and soils by nutrients, organic matter, and heavy metals. In the framework of the Livestock Environment and Development Initiative, this research aims at assessing, on a regional

Smart crop recommendation: fusing nutrient and climate data with Krill Herd Optimization and explainable AI.

Crop recommendation is a vital part of precision agriculture as it helps farmers choose appropriate crops according to the nutrient profile and environmental conditions. This paper presents a crop recommendation framework in which Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), XGBoost, and Tab Transformer are first evaluated as baseline prediction models, followed by the proposed Krill Herd Optimization (KHO)-based explainable framework integrated with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). These eleven parameters are created based on agronomic and environmental aspects, namely: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potas

Inoculation with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia LIMN and Enterobacter roggenkampii LCMG Enhances Maize (Zea mays L.) Yield and Reduces Nitrogen Fertilizer Dependence in Nutrient-Limited Soils of Semi-Arid Regions.

Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization in maize (Zea mays L.) production causes environmental degradation, particularly in semi-arid regions where high chemical inputs are necessary to maintain crop production. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could reduce the optimal N fertilization doses. This investigation aimed to isolate bacteria, screen them for plant growth-promoting traits, and evaluate their potential effects on maize grain under different chemical N fertilization doses. Isolates Stenotrophomonas maltophilia LIMN and Enterobacter roggenkampii LCMG demonstrated multifunctional…

The accelerating pace of gene discovery, coupled with novel plant breeding technologies, provides tangible opportunities with which to engin … crop species. There is an urgent need to tackle the challenge of agrichemical dependency in current crop production systems, and, while engineering for disease resistance is possible, it is not the sole solution and should not be proclaimed as so. Instead, all systems must be given due consideration, with none dismissed in the absence of science-based support, th …

Chloroplast genome editing of Rubisco boosts photosynthesis and plant growth.

Photosynthetic inefficiencies limit the productivity and sustainability of crop production and the resilience of agriculture to future societal and environmental challenges. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) has inherently low catalytic efficiency, making it a key target for photosynthesis and crop improvement. However, introducing mutations to the chloroplast-encoded Rubisco large subunit (rbcL), which contains the enzyme's catalytic sites, is technically challenging. In this study, we successfully generate a range of chloroplast-genome-edited Arabidopsis thaliana plan…

Soil nutrient adequacy for optimal cassava growth, implications on cyanogenic glucoside production: A case of konzo-affected Mtwara region, Tanzania.

Soils in areas affected by konzo (a cassava cyanide intoxication paralytic disorder) are predominantly infertile and probably unable to supply cultivated cassava with the nutrients it needs to achieve optimal growth. Soil nutrient supply in these areas could also be influencing cyanogenic glucoside production in cassava, however there is hardly any knowledge on this. An assessment of soil nutrient levels on crop fields in konzo-affected areas was therefore carried out to determine their adequacy for optimal cassava growth. Konzo-affected Mtwara region of Tanzania, was used as a case study. Whe

Weeding with transgenes.

Transgenes promise to reduce insecticide and fungicide use but relatively little has been done to significantly reduce herbicide use through genetic engineering. Recently, three strategies for transgene utilization have been developed that have the potential to change this. These are the improvement of weed-specific biocontrol agents, enhancement of crop competition or allelopathic traits, and production of cover crops that will self-destruct near the time of planting. Failsafe risk mitigation technologies are needed for most of these strategies.

Cold-induced anthocyanin regulation in horticultural crops: mechanistic basis, trade-offs, and decision-driven temperature management in plant factories.

With the expansion of modern horticultural production systems, anthocyanins have attracted increasing attention for their dual role in imparting vibrant coloration and delivering health-promoting benefits. Preharvest temperature management, particularly controlled low-temperature exposure, has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance anthocyanin accumulation in horticultural crops. Despite extensive molecular insights, decision-driven temperature management (DDTM) frameworks that integrate species-, genotype-, and operational parameter-specific strategies for plant factory applications rema

Precise control of chromatin loop extrusion enhances sustainable green revolution yield in rice.

Continuous and excessive use of inorganic fertilizers underlies current global crop production; therefore, reducing fertilizer use while increasing crop productivity is critical for ensuring agricultural sustainability and food security. Here we show that the natural variant of RCN2, a rice TERMINAL FLOWER 1/CENTRORADIALIS homolog, enhances photosynthesis, nitrogen assimilation and grain yield by restricting chromatin loop extrusion. RCN2 competitively inhibits the interaction between growth-repressing DELLA proteins and SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE transcription factors, breaking th…

Earthworm additions affect leachate production and nitrogen losses in typical midwestern agroecosystems.

Earthworms affect soil structure and the movement of agrochemicals. Yet, there have been few field-scale studies that quantify the effect of earthworms on dissolved nitrogen fluxes in agroecosystems. We investigated the influence of semi-annual earthworm additions on leachate production and quality in different row crop agroecosystems. Chisel-till corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation (CT) and ridge-till corn-soybean-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation (RT) plots were arranged in a complete randomized block design (n = 3) with earthworm treatments (addition and ambient

Drought and high nighttime temperature impact on soybean seed yield and quality under ambient and elevated CO2 environments.

The increasing prevalence of abiotic stresses, including high nighttime temperatures (HNT) and drought during the reproductive stage, poses a risk to global soybean production. Additionally, the influence of rising atmospheric CO2 levels must be considered when addressing changes in temperature and drought conditions. In this study, two soybean genotypes, DS25-1 and DS31-243, were grown under control (0.15 m3 m-3 volumetric soil moisture content (VWC) and 30/22 °C day/night temperature), HNT (30/26 °C day/night temperature), and drought (0.08 m3 m-3 VWC) conditions at ambient (425 ppm, aCO2) a

[Analysis of Bacterial Community Characteristics in Maize Root Zones Under Maize-soybean Compound Planting Mode].

Maize-soybean compound intercropping has the potential to increase yield and is being tested for spreading in Huang-Huai-hai Plain. However, the main regulatory regions of this cropping pattern on soil microbial communities have not been clarified. In the present study, the tested samples were collected from three maize root zones of bulk soil, rhizosphere soil, and roots under mono- and intercropping planting modes, respectively. The non-rhizosphere soil chemical properties and enzyme activities were determined, and bacterial communities were characterized using high-throughput sequencing of

The Potential Impact of Climate Change on the Micronutrient-Rich Food Supply.

Micronutrient deficiencies are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries worldwide. Climate change, characterized by increasing global surface temperatures and alterations in rainfall, has the capacity to affect the quality and accessibility of micronutrient-rich foods. The goals of this review are to summarize the potential effects of climate change and its consequences on agricultural yield and micronutrient quality, primarily zinc, iron, and vitamin A, of plant foods and upon the availability of animal foods, to discuss the implications for micronutrient d

Breeding for micronutrients in staple food crops from a human nutrition perspective.

Over three billion people are currently micronutrient (i.e. micronutrient elements and vitamins) malnourished, resulting in egregious societal costs including learning disabilities among children, increased morbidity and mortality rates, lower worker productivity, and high healthcare costs, all factors diminishing human potential, felicity, and national economic development. Nutritional deficiencies (e.g. iron, zinc, vitamin A) account for almost two-thirds of the childhood death worldwide. Most of those afflicted are dependent on staple crops for their sustenance. Importantly, these crops can
