Lymphocyte subsets in hemophilic patients with hepatitis C virus infection with or without human immunodeficiency virus co-infection: a nested cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: With chronic infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA can be detected in B cells and associated with B-cell disorders, but these are not well defined. METHODS: The relationship between HCV infection and lymphocyte subpopulations was evaluated rigorously in 120 asymptomatic hemophilic patients, randomly selected from a prospective cohort study. CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, CD19+ B cells, and CD56+ NK cells were quantified by flow cytometry using cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 24 hemophilic patients in each of five age-matched groups [uninfected; chronic HCV with or

The role of IgA and IgG in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection: a cross-sectional study in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the high global prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection in humans, most infected individuals achieve a stable immunological equilibrium, without showing clinical signs and symptoms of tuberculosis (TB). Although the role of antibodies in TB is assumed to be relatively small compared with cell-mediated immunity, their role in TB has been documented in a few recent studies. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we quantitated antibody responses to Mtb antigens, lipoarabinomannan (LAM), and heparin-binding hemagglutinin adhesin (HBHA) by determining antig

Genetic crosses reveal genomic loci responsible for virulence in Cryptosporidium parvum infection.

The relationship between parasite genotype and pathogenesis is largely unknown for Cryptosporidium, a leading cause of diarrheal disease in children. An array of parasites with similar genomes produces varied disease outcomes in different hosts. Here, we isolate and characterize Cryptosporidium parvum strains that show marked differences in virulence and persistence in mice. Taking advantage of the sexual lifecycle of this eukaryotic pathogen, we use genetic crosses to discover the underlying chromosomal loci. Whole-genome sequencing and bulk segregant analysis of infection selected progeny ma

Cross-sectional study on surgical site infections and adherence to intraoperative sterile protocols.

Despite advancements in surgical care, surgical site infections (SSIs) continue to contribute significantly to postoperative morbidity. Hence, we evaluated 150 surgical cases over six months at a tertiary care center to assess SSI prevalence and intraoperative sterile practice adherence. An overall SSI rate of 12.7% was noted, predominantly in gastrointestinal and emergency surgeries. Key contributing factors included prolonged operation time, inadequate sterilization, and poor adherence to sterile protocols. The findings underscore the need for stringent infection control practices to reduce

Sexually Transmitted Infections in Adolescents and Young Adults: A Cross Section of Public Health.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be caused by a number of microorganisms that vary greatly in size, life cycle, clinical manifestations, and sensitivity to available treatments. Transmission of STIs can occur during unprotected (or condomless) sexual contact and through the exchange of body fluids during any type of activity. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases remains high in the world, despite diagnostic and therapeutic improvements for these infectious diseases that rapidly eliminate the contagiousness of patients. Our study determines the prevalence of S

Cross-sectional and histopathological studies of Feline Coronavirus infections in stray cats in Kuwait.

Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is a worldwide viral infection of felids. The disease is usually asymptomatic, but it can cause mild diarrhoea; however, few numbers of cases may develop a severe systemic disease known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). This study aims to determine the prevalence of FCoV shedding in the faeces of stray cats in Kuwait and detect antibodies against FCoV in their serum. Histopathological analyses and RT‑PCR were used to prove cases of FIP. A total of 178 cats were examined for the presence of FCoV in their faeces using a rapid immunochromatography (IC) test. Anti‑F

Unraveling cross-reactivity of anti-glycan IgG responses in filarial nematode infections.

Parasitic nematodes responsible for filarial diseases cause chronic disablement in humans worldwide. Elimination programs have substantially reduced the rate of infection in certain areas, but limitations of current diagnostics for population surveillance have been pointed out and improved assays are needed to reach the elimination targets. While serological tests detecting antibodies to parasite antigens are convenient tools, those currently available are compromised by the occurrence of antibodies cross-reactive between nematodes, as well as by the presence of residual antibodies in sera yea

Enhancement of infectivity of insect cell-derived La Crosse Virus by human serum.

Given the dual life cycle of arboviruses in insect and animal hosts and the importance of serum factors as a first line antiviral defense, we have examined the outcome of interactions between the arbovirus La Crosse Virus (LACV) and human serum. To mimic the life cycle between species, we used LACV derived from insect (I-LACV) and human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells. Incubation of I-LACV with normal human serum did not result in neutralization, but instead stabilized I-LACV virions and enhanced the amount of infectious virus. Enhanced infectivity was also seen with heat-inactivated serum devoid o

Parasitic infections in Malaysian aborigines with pulmonary tuberculosis: a comparative cross-sectional study.

The geographical distribution of tuberculosis (TB) overlaps with various parasitic infections. Uncovering the characteristics of coinfecting parasites that potentially affect the host susceptibility to TB is pertinent as it may provide input to current TB therapeutic and prophylactic measures. The present study was aimed at examining the types of parasitic infections in TB patients and healthy TB contacts (HC) in Orang Asli, Malaysian aborigines, who dwelled in the co-endemic areas. Stool and serum samples were collected from Orang Asli who fulfilled the selection criteria and provided written

Molecular Mimicry, Autoimmunity, and Infection: The Cross-Reactive Antigens of Group A Streptococci and their Sequelae.

The group A streptococci are associated with a group of diseases affecting the heart, brain, and joints that are collectively referred to as acute rheumatic fever. The streptococcal immune-mediated sequelae, including acute rheumatic fever, are due to antibody and cellular immune responses that target antigens in the heart and brain as well as the group A streptococcal cross-reactive antigens as reviewed in this article. The pathogenesis of acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, Sydenham chorea, and other autoimmune sequelae is related to autoantibodies that are characteristic of auto

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among Tanzanian migrants: a cross-sectional study.

For the many millions of migrants, mobility creates vulnerabilities and elevates risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We document, among Tanzanian agricultural plantation residents, migrant characteristics and test associations between migrant status and prevalent STI (HSV-2, syphilis, and HIV). From 623 plantation resident participants, we limit this analysis to participants about whom we know migration status (migrants n = 242, non-migrants n = 291). We collected behavioral data via audio-computer assisted self-interview survey, and clinical data via STI testing. We used multivar

Toll-like receptor 3 promotes cross-priming to virus-infected cells.

Cross-presentation of cell-associated antigens plays an important role in regulating CD8+ T cell responses to proteins that are not expressed by antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Dendritic cells are the principal cross-presenting APCs in vivo and much progress has been made in elucidating the pathways that allow dendritic cells to capture and process cellular material. However, little is known about the signals that determine whether such presentation ultimately results in a cytotoxic T cell (CTL) response (cross-priming) or in CD8+ T cell inactivation (cross-tolerance). Here we describe a mech
