Comparative transcriptomic analysis indicates genes associated with local and systemic resistance to Colletotrichum graminicola in maize.

The hemibiotrophic fungus Colletotrichum graminicola may cause severe damage to maize, affecting normal development of the plant and decreasing grain yield. In this context, understanding plant defense pathways at the inoculation site and systemically in uninoculated tissues can help in the development of genetic engineering of resistance against this pathogen. Previous work has discussed the molecular basis of maize - C. graminicola interaction. However, many genes involved in defense have not yet been exploited for lack of annotation in public databases. Here, changes in global gene expressi

The Elongator complex-associated protein DRL1 plays a positive role in immune responses against necrotrophic fungal pathogens in Arabidopsis.

DEFORMED ROOT AND LEAVES1 (DRL1) is an Arabidopsis homologue of the yeast TOXIN TARGET4 (TOT4)/KILLER TOXIN-INSENSITIVE12 (KTI12) protein that is physically associated with the RNA polymerase II-interacting protein complex named Elongator. Mutations in DRL1 and Elongator lead to similar morphological and molecular phenotypes, suggesting that DRL1 and Elongator may functionally overlap in Arabidopsis. We have shown previously that Elongator plays an important role in both salicylic acid (SA)- and jasmonic acid (JA)/ethylene (ET)-mediated defence responses. Here, we tested whether DRL1 also play

De novo transcriptome analyses of host-fungal interactions in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.).

BACKGROUND: Basal stem rot (BSR) is a fungal disease in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) which is caused by hemibiotrophic white rot fungi belonging to the Ganoderma genus. Molecular responses of oil palm to these pathogens are not well known although this information is crucial to strategize effective measures to eradicate BSR. In order to elucidate the molecular interactions between oil palm and G. boninense and its biocontrol fungus Trichoderma harzianum, we compared the root transcriptomes of untreated oil palm seedlings with those inoculated with G. boninense and T. harzianum, respectiv

A density functional theory study of paramagnetic cyclopentadienylcobalt(III) derivatives: fluoride versus cyanide.

The cobalt(III) complexes Cp₂Co₂F₄ and Cp₂Co₂(CN)₄ have been studied by density functional theory methods as representatives of the experimentally known Cp₂Co₂X₄ species with the weak-field fluoride ligand and the strong-field cyanide ligand. Both complexes were found to have relatively complicated energy surfaces with low-energy triplet and quintet spin state structures as well as the expected singlet-state structures for Co(III) complexes. This existence of singlet-, triplet-, and quintet-state structures of similar energies complicates the study of these complexes by density functional theo

Evolution of jasmonate and salicylate signal crosstalk.

The evolution of land plants approximately 470 million years ago created a new adaptive zone for natural enemies (attackers) of plants. In response to attack, plants evolved highly effective, inducible defense systems. Two plant hormones modulating inducible defenses are salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA). Current thinking is that SA induces resistance against biotrophic pathogens and some phloem feeding insects and JA induces resistance against necrotrophic pathogens, some phloem feeding insects and chewing herbivores. Signaling crosstalk between SA and JA commonly manifests as a reci

Aphid antixenosis in cotton is activated by the natural plant defence elicitor cis-jasmone.

Upon insect herbivory, plants can release blends of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that modify herbivore and natural enemy behaviour. We have shown recently that cotton, Gossypium hirsutum, emits a blend of defence VOCs that repels the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, upon herbivory by this notorious crop pest, including (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), methyl salicylate and (E,E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene (TMTT). In this study, we investigated changes in the defence VOC profile of G. hirsutum induced by the naturally-occurring plant elicitor cis

Variation in herbivory-induced volatiles among cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) varieties has consequences for the attraction of carnivorous natural enemies.

In response to herbivory by arthropods, plants emit herbivory-induced volatiles that attract carnivorous enemies of the inducing herbivores. Here, we compared the attractiveness of eight cucumber varieties (Cucumis sativus L.) to Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites after infestation of the plants with herbivorous spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) under greenhouse conditions. Attractiveness differed considerably, with the most attractive variety attracting twice as many predators as the least attractive variety. Chemical analysis of the volatiles released by the infested plants revealed si

Antinociceptive effects of methyl jasmonate in experimental animals.

Methyl jasmonate (MJ) is a chemical compound that has been postulated to play a role in plant wound and pathogen responses. While the anti-inflammatory property of MJ has been reported in literature, no studies have been carried out to describe its role in the modulation of pain. Thus, this present investigation sought to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of MJ in animal models of pain. The antinociceptive activity of MJ (10-50 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) was screened using the acetic acid-induced writhing, tail immersion, formalin-induced paw licking and Randall-Selitto p

Calcium changes and the response to methyl jasmonate in rice lodicules during anthesis.

Potassium pyroantimonate precipitation was used to locate loosely bound calcium in rice (Oryza sativa L.) lodicules before and after anthesis, and flowering of panicles was accelerated by treatment with methyl jasmonate. From 1 day to 4 h before anthesis, the number of calcium precipitates in the cell walls and vacuole membranes decreased gradually, whereas they increased remarkably in the cytoplasm and nucleolus. At the beginning of anthesis, the number of calcium granules in lodicules reduced sharply, but there was a large accumulation of flocculent precipitates in the vacuoles. After anthes

The wound response in tomato--role of jasmonic acid.

Plants respond to mechanical wounding or herbivore attack with a complex scenario of sequential, antagonistic or synergistic action of different signals leading to defense gene expression. Tomato plants were used as a model system since the peptide systemin and the lipid-derived jasmonic acid (JA) were recognized as essential signals in wound-induced gene expression. In this review recent data are discussed with emphasis on wound-signaling in tomato. The following aspects are covered: (i) systemin signaling, (ii) JA biosynthesis and action, (iii) orchestration of various signals such as JA, H2

Jasmonic acid is a key regulator of spider mite-induced volatile terpenoid and methyl salicylate emission in tomato.

The tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) mutant def-1, which is deficient in induced jasmonic acid (JA) accumulation upon wounding or herbivory, was used to study the role of JA in the direct and indirect defense responses to phytophagous mites (Tetranychus urticae). In contrast to earlier reports, spider mites laid as many eggs and caused as much damage on def-1 as on wild-type plants, even though def-1 lacked induction of proteinase inhibitor activity. However, the hatching-rate of eggs on def-1 was significantly higher, suggesting that JA-dependent direct defenses enhanced egg mortality or incr

Fumonisin B1-induced cell death in arabidopsis protoplasts requires jasmonate-, ethylene-, and salicylate-dependent signaling pathways.

We have established an Arabidopsis protoplast model system to study plant cell death signaling. The fungal toxin fumonisin B1 (FB1) induces apoptosis-like programmed cell death (PCD) in wild-type protoplasts. FB1, however, only marginally affects the viability of protoplasts isolated from transgenic NahG plants, in which salicylic acid (SA) is metabolically degraded; from pad4-1 mutant plants, in which an SA amplification mechanism is thought to be impaired; or from jar1-1 or etr1-1 mutant plants, which are insensitive to jasmonate (JA) or ethylene (ET), respectively. FB1 susceptibility of wil

Clinical studies of Platinum Coordination compounds in the treatment of various malignant diseases.

Following the prior work of Rosenberg et al, Rosenberg and VanCamp, and Speer et al, we started clinical trials with cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) in April 1971. Marked tumor regression was noted in several malignant diseases in these initial clinical studies which were reported at the Chemotherapy Congress in Prague, August 1971. At the present time over 178 patients have been treated wihhis durg for a variety of malignant conditions. Approximately half of these patients received the platinum compound alone and the other half received it in combination with four other chemotherapeutic agen

From Safety to Flavor: Nano-TiO2-MeJA Synergistically Alleviates Cadmium Toxicity and Mediates Terpenoid Reprogramming, and Promotes α-Farnesene Accumulation and Refreshing Aroma.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in Jasminum sambac threatens food safety and aroma quality. We compared titanium dioxide nanoparticle (nTiO2) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) effects singly or combined using sensory evaluation, HS-SPME-GC-MS, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and transcriptome analysis. Cd stress reduced pleasant floral and fruity notes, increased irritating odors, elevated floral Cd accumulation, and shifted volatiles to defense-related sesquiterpenes (e.g., α-cadinol, γ-/d-cadinene). MeJA enriched α-farnesene, enhancing fresh green attributes. ICP-MS revealed nTiO

Structural basis of sex pheromone detection in aphids.

Sex pheromones play a central role in regulating animal behavior and reproduction. In insects, these signals are perceived through specialized odorant receptors (ORs) that mediate species-specific communication and safeguard genetic integrity. However, the structural basis of sex pheromone detection remains largely unresolved. Here, we identified two ORs in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, along with the conserved OR co-receptor (Orco), which together mediate recognition of the pheromone components nepetalactone and nepetalactol. Functional assays demonstrated that ApOR21-Orco and ApOR22-Orc

Azospirillum spp. as bio-innovative defenders: Metabolomic signatures and molecular defense reprogramming in plant immunity against fungal phytopathogens.

Fungal diseases accounts for nearly 30-40% of global crop yield losses, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides. Azospirillum spp., traditionally recognized for plant growth promotion, have emerged as potent biocontrol agent with multifaceted defense functions. Beyond niche competition and siderophore production, Azospirillum primes host immunity through reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and activating systemic defense pathways such as salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Metabolomic analyses reveal its i

Methyl hexenoate and linalool emitted by hot peppers repel western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and attract their predator (Orius laevigatus).

A plant emits diverse volatile compounds and communicates with other organisms at different trophic levels. Hot pepper, Capsicum annuum, leaves produced different compositions of 41 organic compounds upon an infestation by the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. These compounds induced a non-preference behavior to the thrips while they attracted a natural enemy, Orius laevigatus. Among the differentially emitted compounds, Z-3-methyl hexenoate (MeH) and linalool repelled the herbivore but attracted the predator. MeH or linalool biosynthesis was suppressed by virus-induced gene s

Hydrogen sulfide enhances kiwifruit resistance to soft rot by regulating jasmonic acid signaling pathway.

As the third active gas signal molecule in plants, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important roles in physiological metabolisms and biological process of fruits and vegetables during postharvest storage. In the present study, the effects of H2S on enhancing resistance against soft rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea and the involvement of jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway in kiwifruit during the storage were investigated. The results showed that 20 μL L-1 H2S fumigation restrained the disease incidence of B. dothidea-inoculated kiwifruit during storage, and delayed the decrease of firmness a

Opposing effects of MYZUS PERSICAE-INDUCED LIPASE 1 and jasmonic acid influence the outcome of Arabidopsis thaliana-Fusarium graminearum interaction.

Fusarium graminearum (Fg) is an important fungal pathogen of small grain cereals that can also infect Arabidopsis thaliana. In Arabidopsis, jasmonic acid (JA) signalling involving JASMONATE RESISTANT 1 (JAR1), which synthesizes JA-isoleucine, a signalling form of JA, promotes susceptibility to Fg. Here we show that Arabidopsis MYZUS PERSICAE-INDUCED LIPASE 1 (MPL1), via its influence on limiting JA accumulation, restricts Fg infection. MPL1 expression was up-regulated in response to Fg infection, and MPL1-OE plants, which overexpress MPL1, exhibited enhanced resistance against Fg. In compariso
