Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is one of the major respiratory diseases of broiler causing huge economic losses. The inability to control IBV using different vaccination programs owing to the high mutation rate and recombination ability of the RNA genome generates IBV variants. This study was designed to give a specific perspective of carvacrol effect on early immune response, viral shedding titer, oxidative stress, serum biochemical parameters and clinical consequences in broilers experimentally infected by IBV. One hundred and twenty-one-day old commercial broiler chicks were equally divi

Activation of the transient receptor potential A1 channel (TRPA1) by electrophilic agonists was reported to induce the opening of tight junctions (TJs). Because compounds that increase TJ permeability can be paracellular permeability enhancers, we investigated the effect of non-electrophilic TRPA1 activators, including food ingredients (menthol and carvacrol) and medication (clotrimazole), on epithelial permeability. We show that all three compounds induced increase of the permeability of fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated dextran (4 kDa) and decrease of transepithelial electrical resistanc

Treating biofilm-associated infections is considerably more challenging in the presence of polymicrobial communities comprising bacterial and fungal species. This underscores the need for innovative therapeutic strategies. This study evaluated the antimicrobial and immunomodulatory efficacy of carvacrol-loaded bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (CAR@BSANPs) against single- and mixed-species biofilms of Candida tropicalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, both alone and in combination with visible light. We assessed antimicrobial photodynamic activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in p

This research investigated the protective properties of Carvacrol (CVC) against Isoproterenol (ISO)-induced oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in rats. The findings showed that CVC treatment did not significantly modify baseline oxidative stress levels in healthy rats but successfully alleviated ISO-induced oxidative damage by augmenting antioxidant enzyme activity and diminishing lipid peroxidation, as demonstrated by a reduction in MDA levels. These findings indicate that CVC can reinstate antioxidant capability and reduce oxidative damage. Concerning neuroinf

Biofilms, intricate microbial communities entrenched in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrices, pose formidable challenges in infectious disease treatment, especially in the context of interkingdom biofilms prevalent in the oral environment. This study investigates the potential of carvacrol-loaded biodegradable nanoemulsions (NEs) with systematically varied surface charges─cationic guanidinium (GMT-NE) and anionic carboxylate (CMT-NE). Zeta potentials of +25 mV (GMT-NE) and -33 mV (CMT-NE) underscore successful nanoemulsion fabrication (∼250 nm). Fluorescent labeling and dynamic tra

Chronic wound infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are one of the serious threats to public health due to limited therapeutic options and lengthy care. This investigation combines 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), blue light (BL), and phytochemical carvacrol, named ABC cocktail or trio-therapy, to efficiently eliminate wound-related MDR pathogens. Both planktonic cells and biofilms of blue light-refractory Escherichia (E.) coli and Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae succumbed to the trio-therapy partly due to porphyrin accumulations following ALA incubation. ALA either alone or alongside

The microbial safety and stability of minimally processed foods are based on the application of combined preservative factors. Since microorganisms are able to develop adaptive networks to survive under conditions of stress, food safety may be affected, and therefore understanding of stress adaptive mechanisms plays a key role in designing safe food processing conditions. In the present study, the viability and the sublethal injury of Listeria monocytogenes exposed to moderate heat (55 °C) and/or essential oil compounds (carvacrol and thymol, 0.3 mM) treatments were studied. Synergistic effect

As part of an ongoing research program to identify active mosquito repellents, Monarda bradburiana Beck and Monarda fistulosa L. essential oils showed good repellent activity with minimum effective dosages (MED) of 0.055 ± 0.036 and 0.078 ± 0.027 mg/cm(2), respectively, compared to reference standard N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) (0.039 ± 0.014 mg/cm(2)). Systematic bioassay-guided fractionation of essential oils of both Monarda species was performed to identify the active repellent compounds, and isolated pure compounds were individually tested for repellency. Of the isolated compounds

We evaluated the ability of the natural, plant-derived acaricides nootkatone and carvacrol to suppress Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae). Aqueous formulations of 1 and 5% nootkatone applied by backpack sprayer to the forest litter layer completely suppressed I. scapularis nymphs through 2 d. Thereafter, the level of reduction gradually declined to < or =50% at 28 d postapplication. Against A. americanum nymphs, 1% nootkatone was less effective, but at a 5% concentration, the level of control was similar or greater to that observed with I. scapularis through

Two novel half-sandwich organometallic complexes, [(p-cymene)-M-(XY)-Cl], XY = L-BSO, M = RuII (Ru-LBSO), OsII (Os-LBSO), containing the amino acid L-buthionine sulfoximine (L-BSO), as well as their XY = glycine analogs (Ru-Gly and Os-Gly), have been synthesized, characterized and their solution chemistry investigated. L-BSO is an inhibitor of the enzyme γ-glutamyl cysteine synthetase and, hence, glutathione synthesis. The diastereomers of Ru-LBSO and Os-LBSO were also characterized by DFT calculations which suggested the higher stability of [SM,rS] and [SM,sS] compared to [RM,rS] and [RM,sS]

Given the tremendous success of (p-cymene)RuII-catalyzed C-H activation over the past 20 years, the community has long been aware that the development of chiral η6-benzene (Ben) ligands should be a potent strategy for achieving the attractive but incredibly underdeveloped ruthenium(II)-catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation. However, it has rarely been achieved due to the severe difficulty in developing proper chiral Ben ligands. In particular, designing chiral Ben ligands by connecting a benzene fragment to a chiral framework including benzene rings remained an unsolved challenge until this effo
