Bisphenol A-induced oxidative stress, hepatotoxicity and altered estrogen receptor expression in Labeo bata: impact on metabolic homeostasis and inflammatory response.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a weak estrogenic endocrine disruptor and a well-known plasticizer, has the potential to perturb diverse physiological functions; however, its impact on immune and metabolic function in aquatic vertebrates is relatively less understood. The present study aims to investigate the impact of BPA on hepatotoxicity, metabolic and immune parameters vis-à-vis estrogen receptor expression modulation in a freshwater teleost, Labeo bata (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes). The 96-h median lethal concentration of BPA in L. bata has been determined as 4.79 mg/L. Our data demonstrate that congrue

Fish Community Structure, Diversity, and Their Environmental Correlates in Two Arid-Region Lakes of Northwest China: Bosten Lake and Taitema Lake.

Bosten Lake and Taitema Lake are important inland lakes in arid Northwest China, but recent fish-assemblage variation in these systems remains poorly resolved. We surveyed fish communities at 10 sites in Bosten Lake and four sites in Taitema Lake from 2023 to 2025 using standardized conventional capture methods. Across the three years, 20 species from 7 orders and 12 families were recorded in Bosten Lake and 12 species from 6 orders and 9 families in Taitema Lake; Cyprinidae was the most species-rich family in both lakes. The cumulative observed species pool and effort-standardized richness we

Fish immune responses to natural infection with carp edema virus (Koi sleepy disease): An emerging fish disease in India.

Emerging pathogen, carp edema virus (CEV) causes koi sleepy disease (KSD) in Koi and common carp causing severe mortalities worldwide. In the present study, a total of 150 fish species belonging to eight different families were sampled from the ornamental fish retailers and farms, located in Karnataka, India. The OIE protocol viz., level-I, II and III diagnoses confirmed the infection of CEV in 10 koi fish. Interestingly, other fish species belonging to different fish family including cyprinidae family were negative to CEV. Further, CEV infection was confirmed by sequencing (partial 4a gene);

Epigenotoxicity of Bisphenol A altered global and ten-eleven translocation-dependent DNA methylation in a non-model fish.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread xenoestrogen used in polycarbonate plastics and other consumer products, is frequently detected in aquatic environments, resulting in continuous exposure of fish and other aquatic organisms. Although the toxicological effects of BPA have been extensively investigated, its epigenetic impacts in non-model teleosts remain poorly characterized. This study evaluated the effects of chronic, sublethal BPA exposure on epigenetic regulation in advanced fingerlings of Labeo rohita. Fish were exposed to BPA at 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mg/L for 45 days. Global DNA methylation leve

Ferulic Acid Attenuates Heat Stress-Induced Hepatic and Intestinal Oxidative Stress and Cholesterol Metabolism Dysregulation in Juvenile Blunt Snout Bream (Megalobrama amblycephala).

Ferulic acid (FA) is a green feed additive. To investigate the molecular mechanisms by which FA attenuates heat stress-induced hepatic and intestinal oxidative stress, as well as cholesterol metabolism disorders in Megalobrama amblycephala (9.75 ± 0.04 g), individuals were fed diets supplemented with 0, 100, or 200 mg/kg FA for eight weeks, followed by exposure to heat stress at 34 °C for 48 h. The results indicated that FA supplementation reduced malondialdehyde levels and downregulation genes involved in inflammatory responses (e.g., interleukin-6), apoptosis (e.g., caspase 8), and endoplasm

Endoscopic Monitoring of Intestinal Parasites in the European Chub (Squalius cephalus).

Quantifying intestinal parasite load in freshwater fish requires the development of reliable, minimally invasive methods. We evaluated the use of a very thin and flexible endoscope to detect and quantify acanthocephalan parasites in 25 European chubs (Squalius cephalus). The presence and number of parasites, as estimated using the endoscope, were correlated with dissection-based counts, especially in the anterior part of the intestine accessible via the insertion tube. Accuracy declined in highly infected fish due to overlapping parasites, but endoscopy still provides an accurate evaluation of

Influence of the dietary contribution of terrestrial insects to the condition factor of bleak Alburnus alburnus in a highly polluted lowland river.

Bleak Alburnus alburnus is a highly abundant but understudied fish species, and we know little about the trophic ecology of populations inhabiting rivers in central Europe. From an ecosystem perspective, this fish species is interesting as it is known to feed on surface insects, thereby linking the terrestrial with the aquatic habitat. In a previous study, we demonstrated that this flux is intensified, and dietary contribution of terrestrial insects is higher in fish inhabiting sections of the Spree River, Germany, that are polluted from iron oxides occurring from former lignite mining activit

What contributes to the metal-specific partitioning in the chub-acanthocephalan system?

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models have been applied to simulate the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of various toxicants in fish. This approach allows for considering metal accumulation in intestinal parasites. Unlike "semi" physiologically-based models developed for metals, metal accumulation in fish was characterised based on metal-specific parameters (the fraction in blood plasma and the tissue-blood partition coefficient) and physiological characteristics of the fish (the blood flow and the tissue weight) in our PBPK model. In the model, intestinal p

Primary stress response and biochemical profile of Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822) experimentally parasitized with Argulus bengalensis (Ramakrishna, 1951).

Argulosis is a major problem that causes huge economic loss in aquaculture. In a microcosm, an infested condition was developed upon Labeo rohita with 100 ± 10 adult morphs of Argulus bengalensis per fish. Primary stress response and biochemical profiles of the host were evaluated to underscore the pathogenicity of the parasites. Significant alterations in biochemical parameters were monitored at four different post-infestation time points: days 1, 3, 6 and 9. The overall increasing trends of both plasma cortisol and plasma epinephrine indicate parasite-induced primary stress response among ex

Transcriptome analysis of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and Holland's spinibarbel (Spinibarbus hollandi) infected with Ichthyophthirius multifiliis.

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is a protozoan ciliate that causes white spot disease (also known as ichthyophthiriasis) in freshwater fish. Holland's spinibarbel (Spinibarbus hollandi) was less susceptible to white spot disease than grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella). In this study, grass carp and Holland's spinibarbel are infected by I. multifiliis and the amount of infection is 10,000 theronts per fish. All grass carp died within 12 days after infection, and the survival rate of Holland's spinibarbel was more than 80%. In order to study the difference in sensitivity of these two fish species

Diversity and phylogeny of Paradiplozoon species (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) parasitising endemic cyprinoids in the peri-Mediterranean area, with a description of three new Paradiplozoon species.

The Diplozoidae are monogenean parasites of mainly cyprinoid fishes with a unique life cycle, whereby two larvae undergo anastomosis and fuse into a single cross-shaped specimen. Paradiplozoon is the most species rich and widespread genus of the family, with a distribution range covering Eurasia and Africa; however, some areas remain underexplored and their diplozoid fauna is uncertain. In the present study, the Paradiplozoon diversity was investigated in the peri-Mediterranean region, which has the highest levels of cyprinoid diversity and endemism in Europe. A total of 36 endemic cyprinoid s

Metal Probe Microextraction Coupled to Dielectric Barrier Discharge Ionization-Mass Spectrometry for Detecting Drug Residues in Organisms.

In this study, a novel method for the direct coupling of metal probe microextraction (MPME) and a dielectric barrier discharge ionization (DBDI) source with mass spectrometry (MS) is reported. Analytes adsorbed on a tungsten needle were directly transferred to the DBDI source via rapid thermal desorption, which resulted in a limit of detection as low as 8 pg/mL. This is in part due to the "active capillary" configuration of the plasma ion source, where the efficiency of ion transfer to the MS is ∼100%. Specialty gases to maintain the plasma and carry analytes to the MS are not required. In con

Minor effects of dietary methylmercury on growth and reproduction of the sheepshead minnow Cyprinodon variegatus and toxicity to their offspring.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic compound that is found in virtually all fish and biomagnifies in aquatic food webs. Although MeHg concentrations in marine and estuarine fish are often elevated, the impacts of MeHg on marine and estuarine fish have largely been understudied. To evaluate the impact of dietary MeHg on marine fish reproduction and effects on their offspring, female juvenile sheepshead minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus) at three months of age were experimentally exposed to MeHg-contaminated diets for two months and then paired with Hg-free males for spawning. Redescription of the genus Afrodiplozoon Khotenovski, 1981 and its only known species Afrodiplozoon polycotyleus (Paperna, 1973) (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) using a combined multidisciplinary approach.

The present study redescribes the monotypic genus Afrodiplozoon Khotenovski, 1981, a diplozooid parasite endemic to Africa, based on material collected during surveys carried out in the Limpopo Province, South Africa, from two cyprinid hosts Labeobarbus marequensis and Enteromius paludinosus. Morphometrical analysis of the composition of internal organs and attachment clamps, using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, provided details for the genus and species redescriptions. Gyrodactylus spp. diversity in native and introduced minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) populations: no support for "the enemy release" hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Translocation of native species and introduction of non-native species are potentially harmful to the existing biota by introducing e.g. diseases, parasites and organisms that may negatively affect the native species. The enemy release hypothesis states that parasite species will be lost from host populations when the host is introduced into new environments. METHODS: We tested the enemy release hypothesis by comparing 14 native and 29 introduced minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) populations in Norway with regard to the ectoparasitic Gyrodactylus species community and load (on caudal fin

The Lawa model: A sustainable, integrated opisthorchiasis control program using the EcoHealth approach in the Lawa Lake region of Thailand.

Opisthorchiasis caused by the carcinogenic liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is a major foodborne parasitic zoonotic disease in Thailand and neighboring Mekong countries. The infection is associated with several hepatobiliary diseases including cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). The rates of CCA in regions where the parasite is endemic are unprecedented. Extensive research on various aspects of opisthorchiasis has been conducted in recent decades. However, the current status of O. viverrini infection in the country is approaching 85% prevalence in certain endemic areas even after more than 30years of
