Eighty-four Single-Comb While Leghorn laying hens housed individually in laying cages were fed rations containing less than 0.1 p.p.m. of dieldrin, DDT, heptachlor and mirex individually or in combination for 7 days and in combination for 15 weeks. This study focuses on the distribution of some selected organochlorine pesticides and emerging contaminants within the surface sediments of an Arctic fjord, Kongsfjorden and nearby lakes. Residue levels of organochlorine pesticides have been determined in raw fruits, vegetables and tubers from markets in Nigeria. In the fruits, total HCH, aldrin and total DDT were detected in 77, 38 and 30% of all samples, respectively. In the vegetables, total HCH, HCB, total DDT and aldrin were detected from 95, 53, 50 and 30%, respectively, of all samples. Villages in South Arcot and Tirunelveli districts with high incidence of Japanese Encephalitis were selected for the study of insecticidal resistance to vectors. Culex vishnui and Anopheles hyrcanus group were found to be resistant to DDT (4 per cent for 60 min. exposure) and dieldrin (0.4 per cent for 60 min. exposure) but susceptible to Malathion (5 per cent for 60 min. exposure). So far, this is perhaps the first report of Anopheles hyrcanus group resistant to DDT and dieldrin to be reported from this area. The resistance may be due to extensive use of DDT and HCH for agricultural purposes.
