The effect of different treatment regimens on clinical and microbiologic cures of neonatal conjunctivitis was evaluated during a 32-day observation period. In 84 infants with mild to moderate conjunctivitis and no signs of dacryocystitis, clinical cures were achieved in more than 50% of the cases with lid hygiene only. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common organism (48%) isolated from these infants. Chlamydia trachomatis could not be isolated from eyes with mild to moderate conjunctivitis. Forty-four infants with severe conjunctivitis, with or without dacryocystitis, were randomly assigned…

A total of 46 patients suffering persistent lacrimation were available for examination. Chronic catarrhal dacryocystitis was diagnosed in 19 (41.3%) of them and chronic purulent dacryocystitis in the remaining 27 (58.7%). All the patients presented with lacrimal duct obstruction. Surgical treatment included mucroscopic endonasal canaliculocystorhinostomy with intubation of lacrimal passages using the Ritleng system. After the completion of the one-year dynamic follow-up period and removal of the stent from the lacrimal passages, results of the treatment were described as positive in 42 (91.3%)…

The common ocular manifestations of CHARGE syndrome include colobomatous defects in the eye, strabismus, nystagmus, and micropthalmia. Lacrimal drainage anomalies have been rarely reported and to the best of the authors' knowledge, only 5 such cases have been reported earlier. The present case describes CHARGE syndrome associated with bilateral complex congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction with multiple prior attacks of acute dacryocystitis and left lower punctal agenesis, successfully managed with a right-sided dacryocystorhinostomy and awaiting a left dacryocystorhinostomy.Lacrimal draina…

OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnostic role of computed tomographic dacryocystography (CTDCG) in lacrimal path damage and provide operative approach guidance for the endoscopic transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
METHOD: Twenty-eight cases with lacrimal path damage underwent CTDCG. The following reconstruction techniques including volume rendering (VR), multiple planar reconstruction (MPR), maximum intensity projection (MIP) and three-dimensional reconstruction (3-d R) were done on the real-time workstation. The morphology of dacryocyst, displacement fracture of the lacrimal fossa (FS) and

Malignant melanoma of the lacrimal sac is rare, and only 21 cases have been reported in the world literature. They have an insidious onset and may look like chronic dacryocystitis. In only 6 of these cases were there no recurrences. In most of the survivors, the diagnosis was made early which appears to be the most important prognostic factor. Hence a CT-scan in cases of persistent dacryocystitis is important. Melanoma of the lacrimal duct system is a good example of a condition requiring a multidisciplinary approach between ophthalmologist and maxillofacial surgeon. Any persistently symptomat…

A 82-year old woman patient was first diagnosed to have a dacryocystitis and was treated at the Department of Ophthalmology. Clinical examination and x-ray of the paranasal sinuses including tomographs led to the suspicion of a malignant, infiltratively growing tumour in the region of the left cheek and of the left ethmoidal cells. After endonasal removal of the tumour that obstructed the left nasal cavity and ethmoidal cells, histological diagnosis revealed an eosinophilic adenoma. Dacryocystitis had been caused secondarily by the impairment of lacrymal flow. Now, one year later, the patient …

INTRODUCTION: Congenital lacrimal fistulae are a developmental disorder and can be associated with other hereditary developmental diseases.
CASE REPORT: A patient with Down syndrome presented with events of recurrent dacryocystitis and lacrimal fistulation on 1 eye. A DCR surgery with excision of a fistula had been performed 2 years before. The investigation under general anesthesia also revealed a clinically unrecognized lacrimal fistula on the contralateral side.
COMMENT: The case report documents a unique case of bilateral congenital lacrimal fistulae in association with Down syndrome. Da…

Chronic dacryocystitis is commonly seen in patients requiring a dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). The infection may be primary, or may be secondary to an anatomical abnormality that has led to tear flow stasis. It is possible that many cases of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction are in fact secondary to unrecognized low-grade dacryocystitis. The intent of this study was to determine what organisms grow in the lacrimal sac of patients requiring DCR. It also investigated whether or not there was a correlation between organisms cultured from the sac and from the conjunctiva and/or the nose…

PURPOSE: Chronic dacryocystitis or obstruction of nasolacrimal duct is one of the common and refractory eye diseases. The present operations have large destruction to lacrimal passage and unsatisfactory effects. The purpose of this research is to explore a simple and easy surgical method that makes small injuries and good curative effects.
METHODS: Prob a self-made lumbar puncture needle (No. 7) through the lacrimal drainage system, inject fluid and put a thread into the inferior meatus. Guided by the thread, a special robe is retrogradely pulled through the nasolacrimal duct to dilate the me…

A 23-year-old woman presented with clinical symptoms suggestive of acute dacryocystitis. She had no history of epiphora, and her lacrimal drainage system was patent on irrigation. CT findings were consistent with anterior ethmoiditis and maxillary sinusitis. Although the symptoms responded to antibiotic treatment, they recurred 2 times within the following 5 months. During the last episode, a complete obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct developed. The condition did not recur after external dacryocystorhinostomy and anterior ethmoidectomy during a follow-up of 21 months. Ethmoiditis may rarely…
