Cochlear Implants for Single-Sided Deafness: Quality of Life, Daily Usage, and Duration of Deafness.

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience for adults undergoing cochlear implantation (CI) for single-sided deafness (SSD). METHODS: This is a retrospective case series for adults with SSD who underwent CI between January 2013 and May 2021 at our institution. CNC and AzBio speech recognition scores, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ12), datalogging, and the Cochlear Implant Quality of Life (CIQOL)-10 Global measure were utilized. RESULTS: Sixty-six adults underwent CI for SSD (median 51.3 years, range 20.0-74.3 years), and 57 (86.4%) remained d…

Electrocochleography in deaf subjects.

Electrocochleography using the transtympanic electrode technique was performed on 86 deaf ears. Auditory nerve action potential was detected in 9 ears, in 5 of which deafness was caused by cerebellopontine angle tumor or surgery. A low threshold of the cochlear microphonics' response was also observed in some of the cases with deafness caused by mumps or cerebellopontine angle tumor. Various pathophysiological states of the inner ear can be observed, even in cases showing the same total deafness when measured by audiometer.

Genetic counseling for the deaf.

Genetic counseling is a process that emphasizes accurate diagnosis of hereditary conditions and communication of information to families. Genetic counseling involves systematic collection of family and medical history, a physical examination by a certified clinical geneticist, sharing of information with the family, and follow-up and support services. The issues that arise in genetic counseling can differ for every family and are often dependent on the degree of deafness present in the family, age of onset, and linguistic and cultural orientation. It is important for the genetic counselor to c…

New Zealand deaf adults' perspectives on speech-language therapy for deaf children.

Speech-language therapy (SLT) within deaf education in Aotearoa New Zealand remains influenced by oralist traditions. Māori deaf individuals also face barriers to their culture and native language. This qualitative study explored deaf adults' experiences and perceptions of SLT, including how SLTs should best support deaf children. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with 11 deaf adults (aged 28-65) who had engaged with SLT. Data were generated in New Zealand Sign Language or English and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Ensuring deaf children thrive and flourish was the overar

Hundred Languages of Deaf Children: Exploring the Reggio Emilia Approach in Deaf Education.

The study investigated the "hundred languages of Deaf children" (Malaguzzi, 1993) in two schools using the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, which originated in Italy. One principle of this approach, "the hundred languages of children," supports young children in expressing their ideas and thoughts in different ways. The hundred languages include expression through written, spoken, and signed languages, among many other means, and children are empowered to express themselves using these multiple channels. The researchers employed ethnographic study methods: Multiple early ch

A case of deaf-mutism as an expression of pure word deafness: neuroimaging and electrophysiological data.

We report a case of pure word deafness, clinically expressed as deaf-mutism in a 17-year-old girl, who was affected from encephalitis when she was 18 months old and hadn't acquired language skills. Actually, physical examination revealed buccolingual apraxia and absence of spontaneous speech, auditory comprehension, repetition and denomination, whereas perception of non-verbal sounds was preserved. The seven waves of brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) were present with normal latencies; middle latency responses (MLR) were also normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral t…

Through deaf eyes: factors influencing suicidal behavior among deaf adults.

Deaf people are at higher suicide risk, yet little is known about the factors that contribute to this elevated risk, particularly in Australia. This research explored factors which deaf Australian adults perceived to influence their suicidal behavior. A parallel multi-methods sequential design study using a strengths-based deaf-centric approach was conducted. This incorporated qualitative interviews with deaf sign language users who reported adverse mental health experiences and a national cross-sectional survey of deaf adults. Both instruments included questions about perceived influences on

Sign language delays in deaf 3- to 5-year-olds with deaf parents.

Research has demonstrated that deaf children of deaf signing parents (DOD) are afforded developmental advantages. This can be misconstrued as indicating that no DOD children exhibit early language delays (ELDs) because of their early access to a visual language. Little research has studied this presumption. In this study, we examine 174 ratings of DOD 3- to 5-year-old children, for whom signing in the home was indicated, using archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist. Our goals were to (1) examine the incidence of ELDs in a cohort of DOD ch

A novel mutation of X-linked recessive deafness gene POU3F4 in a boy with congenital deafness.

PURPOSE: To report an interstitial deletion of Xq21.1 in chromosome X in a boy with congenital deafness. METHODS: The proband underwent a thorough physical examination and a detailed audiological and temporal bone computed tomography (CT) scan. Cochlear implantation was performed on the proband, and follow-up was conducted. High throughput sequencing and copy number analysis was made of peripheral blood samples from the proband, family members, and control subjects. RESULTS: Sensorineural hearing loss was present in the boy and temporal bone CT scan showed a bilateral incomplete partition ty…
