CtChi19: a valuable gene for improving resistance to Botrytis cinerea and Alternaria alternata in Carthamus tinctorius.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an economically important crop with both medicinal and oil-producing values, However, its production is severely threatened by fungal diseases, including those caused by Alternaria alternata and other pathogenic fungi. To date, molecular investigations into the disease resistance mechanisms of safflower remain largely limited. In this study, proteomic analysis was performed on safflower following infection by A. alternata, identifying 490 and 921 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) at 48 hours post-infection (hpi) and 72 hpi, respectively, Among thes

Common Finger Injuries: Treatment Guidelines for Emergency and Primary Care Providers.

INTRODUCTION: Finger and hand injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions presenting to emergency departments and primary care providers. Many rural and community hospitals may not have immediate access to an orthopedic surgeon on-site. Furthermore, military treatment facilities, both within the continental United States and in austere deployment environments, face similar challenges. Therefore, knowing how to treat basic finger and hand injuries is paramount for patient care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch operates the Defense Medical Sur

Extraction and Separation of Active Ingredients in Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill and the Study of their Antifungal Effects.

Schisandra chinensis extracts (SEs) have traditionally been used as an oriental medicine for the treatment of various human diseases, however, their further application in the biocontrol of plant disease remains poorly understood. This study was conducted to develop eco-friendly botanical pesticides from extracts of S. chinensis and assess whether they could play a key role in plant disease defense. Concentrated active fractions (SE-I, SE-II, and SE-III) were obtained from S. chinensis via specific extraction and separation. Then, lignan-like substances, such as Schisanhenol B, were detected v

Blood-Borne Pathogens: A Canadian Blood Services Centre for Innovation Symposium.

Testing donations for pathogens and deferring selected blood donors have reduced the risk of transmission of known pathogens by transfusion to extremely low levels in most developed countries. Protecting the blood supply from emerging infectious threats remains a serious concern in the transfusion medicine community. Transfusion services can employ indirect measures such as surveillance, hemovigilance, and donor questioning (defense), protein-, or nucleic acid based direct testing (detection), or pathogen inactivation of blood products (destruction) as strategies to mitigate the risk of transm

An in-depth synthetic wrap on the immune-hemostatic axis in human disease.

Human defense systems (immunity, inflammation, hemostasis, fibrinolysis, and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system) have co-evolved to provide multilayered protection against infections, trauma, malignancies, and metabolic disturbances. In humans, these systems reach exceptional regulatory sophistication and are coordinated through integrated immunological and hemostatic mechanisms forming the frontline of defense. While highly efficient under physiological conditions, these networks can become dysregulated when challenged by overwhelming pathological stimuli. The COVID-19 pandemic exemplif

Integrative metabolomics and molecular networking reveal the progressive metabolic continuum of resin formation in Dracaena cochinchinensis wood.

INTRODUCTION: The resinification of Dracaena cochinchinensis wood represents a sophisticated physiological reprogramming triggered by environmental stress, culminating in the production of the high-value "dragon's blood" resin. METHODS: In this study, we systematically characterized the chemical space of three representative wood morphotypes-hollow cork cambium (P), whole-body resin-containing (MZ), and resin-secreting aggregated (LZ)-to decipher the molecular mechanisms underpinning resinogenesis within the xylem matrix. Integrating UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS with Feature-Based Molecular Networking (F

[The Immune System of the Critically Ill Patient].

Critically ill patients often experience a dysregulated immune response, leading to immune dysfunction. Sepsis, trauma, severe infections, and certain medical conditions can trigger a state of systemic inflammation, known as the cytokine storm. This hyperactive immune response can cause collateral damage to healthy tissues and organs, exacerbating the patient's condition. On the other hand, some critically ill patients may suffer from immune paralysis which can increase the risk of nosocomial infections.Fever is an evolutionary adaptation that evolved as an effective defense mechanism to fight

Andrographolide simultaneously augments Nrf2 antioxidant defense and facilitates autophagic flux blockade in cigarette smoke-exposed human bronchial epithelial cells.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cigarette smoke heightens oxidative stress and impairs autophagy, advancing COPD progression. Andrographolide is a bioactive diterpenoid lactone isolated from the plant Andrographis paniculata which has been a traditional medicinal herb for respiratory diseases. As airway epithelial cells form the first interface to be exposed to cigarette smoke, this study aimed to explore the modulatory effects of andrographolide on oxidative stress and autophagy in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells exposed to ciga

Dietary supplementation with lacto-wolfberry enhances the immune response and reduces pathogenesis to influenza infection in mice.

Despite the availability of vaccines, influenza is a considerable public health problem, which emphasizes the need for development of additional strategies to enhance host defense against influenza. Wolfberry, or goji berry, long used as a medicinal food in China, has recently been shown to improve immune response in mice. Because immune response plays a key role in the body's defense against pathogens, we hypothesized that wolfberry may increase host resistance to influenza infection by enhancing immune response. To test this hypothesis, we fed adult mice (4 mo old) a milk-based preparation o

When the profession itself is contested: Transformative learning and divergent identity pathways among first-year medical students during a macro-social crisis.

INTRODUCTION: Professional identity formation (PIF) research in medical education has largely examined micro-level dilemmas within relatively stable training environments. Less is known about how macro-social crises destabilizing the profession's public legitimacy shape early PIF. This study explored how first-year medical students narrated the impact of the 2024-2025 doctor-government conflict in South Korea on their professional identity development, using Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) as an interpretive lens. METHODS: We conducted a theory-informed qualitative study using written re

A Recent Update on the Epigenetic Repertoire and Chromatin Modifying Therapy in Diabetes Mellitus: A Comprehensive Review.

Several epigenome studies reported the ability of genes to modulate the lipogenic and glucogenic pathways during insulin signaling as well as the other pathways involved in cardiometabolic diseases. Epigenetic plasticity and oxidative stress are interrelated in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance (IR) and cardiometabolic disease conditions. This review aims to ascertain the previous research evidence pertaining to the role of the epigenome and the variations of histone and non-histone proteins during cardiometabolic disease conditions and insulin signaling to develop effective disease-ba

Venomics of the Central European Myrmicine Ants Myrmica rubra and Myrmica ruginodis.

Animal venoms are a rich source of novel biomolecules with potential applications in medicine and agriculture. Ants are one of the most species-rich lineages of venomous animals. However, only a fraction of their biodiversity has been studied so far. Here, we investigated the venom components of two myrmicine (subfamily Myrmicinae) ants: Myrmica rubra and Myrmica ruginodis. We applied a venomics workflow based on proteotranscriptomics and found that the venoms of both species are composed of several protein classes, including venom serine proteases, cysteine-rich secretory protein, antigen 5 a

Anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcerogenic activities of Chantaleela recipe.

Chantaleela recipe is indicated for relieving fever in Thai traditional folk medicine. In the present study, Chantaleela recipe was investigated for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and anti-ulcerogenic activities. In preliminary investigation Chantaleela recipe was found to exert an inhibitory activity on the acute phase of inflammation as seen in ethyl phenylpropiolate-induced ear edema as well as in carrageenan-induced hind paw edema in rats. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory activity of Chantaleela recipe may be due to an inhibition via cyclooxygenase pathway. In the

Hugh Alistair Reid OBE MD: investigation and treatment of snake bite.

Alistair Reid was an outstanding clinician, epidemiologist and scientist. At the Penang General Hospital, Malaya, his careful observation of sea snake poisoning revealed that sea snake venoms were myotoxic in man leading to generalized rhabdomyolysis, and were not neurotoxic as observed in animals. In 1961, Reid founded and became the first Honorary Director of the Penang Institute of Snake and Venom Research. Effective treatment of sea snake poisoning required specific antivenom which was produced at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Melbourne from Enhydrina schistosa venom supplied by t
