The strength of modern medicine is its relentless quest for an elusive perfection. That quest requires that we examine our errors even more … lapse during or after prolonged exercise is caused by heat exhaustion; heat exhaustion is caused by dehydration; both are prevented by inordinate fluid ingestion; and immediate treatment should be intravenous fluids. I have termed this traditional litany the "dehydration myth" ((2,3)). It has been relentlessly perpetuated, always in the guise of good science.

Sixty-two children (13 days to 11 years old) with 1-12% dehydration due to acute watery diarrhoea were rehydrated in an Emergency Room Setting by means of intravenous fluid therapy in 6.34 +/- 0.57 hr. Mean duration of hospital stay was reduced and 87% of patients stayed 24 hrs. or less as compared to 36% in previous studies at this hospital. The correction of dehydration and its electrolyte imbalance was done in a shorter time; recovery of the patients was better and the complications were less; the method allowed a more rational use of beds in the Emergency Room Setting.

Mucormycosis in infants is exceedingly rare, and over 90% of reported cases have been fatal. A case of a dehydrated three-week-old infant with involvement of the palate, maxilla, orbit, and brain is described with extensive laboratory and radiological investigation. This infant survived after surgical debridement and therapy with amphotericin B.

The suitability of zinc-containing dehydrating fixatives for neurohistological study of paraffin sections using Nissl staining and immunocytochemical techniques was examined. It was found that zinc-containing dehydrating fixatives (zinc-ethanol-formaldehyde and zinc-acetone-isopropanol-formaldehyde) had a capacity for good preservation of both structure and antigenic properties of the nervous tissue and could be recommended for application in neurohistological studies.
