Primary cilia in the pathogenesis of dentigerous cyst: a new hypothesis based on role of primary cilia in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), an inherited disease, leads to cyst formation in the kidneys. In this condition, the kidneys are grossly enlarged with multiple cysts that result in kidney failure in a majority of individuals. This condition is also associated with cysts in other organs. Recent research has focused on defects in signaling mediated by the primary cilia as the causative factor in ADPKD. Primary cilia are also present in odontogenic epithelium. Dentigerous cyst also is a developmental cyst whose pathogenesis is controversial. Recent studies have shown that lo…

"Dry Tap" Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy as a Diagnostic Clue in Cyst-like Juvenile Jaw Lesions Mimicking Dentigerous Cysts on Panoramic Radiography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Pediatric odontogenic tumors are rare but are frequently overlooked because they often mimic simple cysts on routine radiographic examinations. The radiographic appearance on panoramic imaging and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) frequently does not correlate with the true biological nature of these lesions. On CBCT, classic odontogenic tumors often demonstrate mixed radiolucent-radiopaque patterns with ill-defined borders, internal calcifications, septations, or other structural features. The diagnostic challenge arises when an odontogenic tumor mimics a unilateral, well-defined radioluce

Histopathological spectrum of primordial odontogenic tumor with co-existing dentigerous cyst: 1st reported case of the world with a proposed 'updated diagnostic criteria'.

BACKGROUND: POT is a relatively newly described benign odontogenic tumor with very few cases registered to date. We present the 1st case of Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) from Sub-Saharan Africa with unique clinicopathological features; also, this is the first case to report POT's existence as a Hybrid Odontogenic lesion (HOL), with a pertinent review of the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: This was a 17-year-old patient who presented with slow-growing, painless posterior mandibular swelling. The imaging revealed a well-defined, unilocular, expansile, lytic lesion with internal calcific foc

Management of a deeply impacted mandibular third molar and associated large dentigerous cyst to avoid nerve injury and improve periodontal healing: case report.

As dentigerous cysts increase in size, the risk of postsurgical complications increases as well. Emphasis is usually placed on the risk of neurologic damage caused by trauma during and after surgical removal and of mandibular fracture resulting from the large residual bone defect. However, influence on the periodontal status of neighbouring teeth should also be taken into account. In this article, we present an interdisciplinary, safe, minimally invasive approach to treating large dentigerous cysts associated with deeply impacted third molars. A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined patholog…

Use of Patient-Specific Titanium Plates to Prevent Iatrogenic Mandibular Fracture During the Surgical Removal of Dentigerous Cysts: A Two-Case Series.

Dentigerous cysts, if left untreated, can grow significantly and weaken the mandible, posing risks of pathological or iatrogenic fracture. Treatment options may include decompression, marsupialization, and enucleation, which are available, with the choice being multifactorial and tailored to each case. This article describes the management of two complex dentigerous cysts at risk of fracture, one about an 84-year-old woman and the second about a 41-year-old man. The cysts and associated teeth were surgically removed, and simultaneously custom-made titanium osteosynthesis plates were placed to …

Analysis of the immunoexpression of Ki-67 and Bcl-2 in the pericoronal tissues of impacted teeth, dentigerous cysts and gingiva using software image analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pericoronal tissue is the soft tissue located between the bony crypt and the impacted tooth, which is histologically composed of fibrous connective tissue and is usually lined by the reduced enamel epithelium. Increased epithelial cell proliferation in the pericoronal tissue is associated with pathological changes such as development of an odontogenic cyst or an epithelial odontogenic tumor. This study is an attempt to evaluate and compare the proliferative index in the epithelium surrounding the impacted third molar teeth, dentigerous cysts, and gingiva. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A …

Association between CT image findings and hypoesthesia in the mental region and lower lip after dentigerous cyst removal: a retrospective study and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of computed tomography (CT)/cone-beam computed beam CT (CBCT) in association with hypoesthesia of the menta … r all hypoesthesia and CT/CBCT image findings. CONCLUSIONS: Imaging evaluation was performed in 39 dentigerous cysts, and a literature review was performed. We found that CT/CBCT alone does not provide sufficiently reliable images required for predicting nerve lesions. Future prospective studies are required.

Dentigerous cyst of mandibular second premolar in a five-year-old girl, related to a non-vital primary molar removed one year earlier: a case report.

A dentigerous cyst of the mandibular second premolar in a 5-year-old female was radiographically diagnosed. A non-vital primary predecessor molar had been removed a year earlier. At that time, the primary molar had been in the mouth for approximately two years. Although there was the possibility of the premolar being non-vital, as a consequence of the cystic cavity surrounding it, marsupialization treatment of the cyst was done, causing a rapid development of the premolar. Structural irregularities in the enamel and in the first radicular portion were visible, possibly caused by the very early…

Case Report : Bilateral dentigerous cysts in association with developing third molars and premolars in a non-syndromic 13-year-old: a 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are benign, non-inflammatory odontogenic cysts that form over unerupted or partially erupted teeth. They are the second most common type of odontogenic cysts and can cause various complications if left untreated. METHODS: We report a rare case of bilateral dentigerous cysts in the mandible of a 13-year-old boy. Radiographic examination revealed two cysts on each mandibular side, associated with developing third molars and unerupted permanent second premolars. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of dentigerous cysts. RESULTS: The patient underwe…

Radiographic evolution of a dentigerous cyst associated with a deeply impacted mandibular first molar in a pediatric patient: a CBCT-based longitudinal case report with minimal-visit orthodontic management.

A deeply impacted mandibular first molar associated with a dentigerous cyst is an uncommon clinical presentation, particularly in pediatric patients. This case report describes a 9-year-old boy who presented with delayed eruption of the mandibular right first molar. Panoramic radiography revealed a well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion associated with a deeply impacted tooth, while cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) demonstrated buccolingual cortical expansion and thinning, displacement of the adjacent second molar germ, and close proximity to the inferior alveolar canal. Based on clini…

Keeping your eye on the ball.

Dentigerous cysts develop from unerupted and impacted permanent teeth. Very rarely, supernumerary teeth are associated with dentigerous cysts and constitute about 5-6% of all dentigerous cysts. Although these cysts are not common in the first decade of life, regular thorough inspection of radiographs is of importance, as indicated by this case report. This case shows how an impacted supernumerary canine developed a dentigerous cyst, engulfing the whole of the maxillary antrum.

Expression of Dlx-5 and HLX Proteins in Odontogenic Cysts.

Odontogenic cysts, commonly detected during routine examinations involving head and neck imaging such as orthopantomograms and computed tomography (CT), are classified into two groups: developmental and inflammatory. Radicular cysts, which belong to the inflammatory group, originate from odontogenic epithelium, while dentigerous cysts of developmental origin are observed as a result of peri-coronal expansion of fluid in the dental follicle. The diagnosis and identification of odontogenic cysts rely on clinical, radiographic, and histological evaluations. This study aimed to demonstrate the exp…
