Odontoblast morphology and dental repair.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the changes in morphology and activity of pulp odontoblasts in response to cavity restoration variables and patient factors. METHODS: Class V non exposed cavities were prepared in the intact 1st or 2nd premolar teeth of 27 patients, aged between 9 and 17 years-old. Following tooth extraction, the area of reactionary dentine and the area of the odontoblasts were measured using computerised histomorphometry. RESULTS: The cytoplasm to nucleus ratio of the odontoblasts was found to increase beneath cut dentinal tubules, following the secretion of reactionary dentine. H

Preserving the vital pulp in operative dentistry: 2. Guidelines for successful restoration of unexposed dentinal lesions.

The exciting treatment possibilities arising from tissue engineering approaches are still some years away from involvement in dentistry. Meanwhile, it is important to optimize conventional treatments, although precise information on pulp responses to cavity preparation and restoration variables are limited. Odontoblast survival, pulp inflammation, and tertiary dentine area are used as measures of pulp injury and repair.

Pink Spot - Literature Review and Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pink spots in teeth were first described by Mummery in 1920, and were related to resorption. Resorption is a pathologic process that often eludes the clinician with its varied etiologic factors and diverse clinical presentations. Resorption can be generally classified as internal and external resorption. Internal resorption has been described as a rare occurrence as compared to external resorption. CASE REPORT: This article describes a pink spot that was diagnosed as a progressing resorption process. Early diagnosis enabled a successful management of the lesion. CONCLUSION: Early

The clinical and histological evaluation of cresatin with calcium hydroxide on the human dental pulp.

Metacresylacetate with calcium hydroxide in a methylcellulose base produces clinically and radiographically successful pulpotomies, when performed on sound primary teeth. Under sterile conditions, with proper surgical and restorative technique, pulp tissue will heal with metacresylacetate with calcium hydroxide-methylcellulose. The dental pulp will form on osteodentin bridge and the pulp adjoining the bridge will remain histologically viable and free of inflammation. Methylcellulose with sterile distilled water does not produce as favorable a histological reaction as metacresylacetate with cal

Preserving the vital pulp in operative dentistry: 4. Factors influencing successful pulp capping.

The sequence of factors that mediate pulp inflammation and necrosis are unclear, and controversy surrounds the effects of different pulp capping materials on exposed pulps. Clinicians have few quantitative studies that rank the in vivo pulp capping effects of commonly used restorative materials.

The effect of physiological root resorption on repair potential of primary tooth pulp.

The aim of this study was to determine, the effects of root resorption on repair potential of healthy deciduous tooth pulps. Fourteen canine teeth which needed to be extracted for orthodontic purposes and in which resorption had just begun (1st group, resorption did not exceed 1/3 of root length) or was in advanced resorption stage (2nd group, resorption was between 1/3 and 2/3 of root length) were used for this study. Direct pulp capping treatment was implemented in vivo, to 7 teeth in each group. Reparative dentin formation was determined three months later following extraction. The teeth we

Effects of the argon laser on primary tooth pulpotomies in swine.

This study evaluated the clinical, radiographic, and histologic effects of the HGM PC Oralase argon laser on vital pulps of swine teeth. Pulpotomies were performed in vivo on 42 primary teeth from three young pigs and observed for 7 or 60 days. For each time period nine experimental teeth received an argon laser dose of 1 W, 2 sec (24.88 J/cm2), and nine experimental teeth received a dose of 2 W, 2 sec (49.74 J/cm2). Controls consisted of three teeth for each time period and did not receive exposure from the argon laser. There were no significant differences noted between the two energy densit

Effect of calcium hydroxide and combinations of Ledermix and calcium hydroxide on inflamed pulp in dog teeth.

The effects of Ledermix+calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) or Ca(OH)2 alone on inflamed pulp tissues of dogs were studied. Fifty-nine upper incisor teeth of 10 dogs were used. Class V cavities were prepared and filled with amalgam after placement of decayed dentin particles. After 7 days, the decayed dentin and alloy were removed, and the pulps of the teeth were exposed. Ledermix and Ca(OH)2 mixtures or Ca(OH)2 alone were applied to the cavities. At the end of 7, 30, and 90 days, the teeth were extracted and examined histopathologically. Inflammation was found to be more prevalent in the 7- and 30-da

Pulpal response to MPC for capping exposures.

This study has shown that pulp capping of traumatic exposures with Dycal will stimulate dentine formation, with complete bridging adjacent to the material in seven out of eight teeth 1 month later. The success rate at 3 months was similar, with regular dentine being formed under the initial irregular dentine barrier. Dentine bridging was not found 3 months after pulp capping with MPC, although some reparative dentine had been formed. The coronal pulp was usually partially necrotic and inflamed, although the extent of each was not related. Large amounts of MPC were found in the pulp at some dis

Pulp and apical tissue response to deep caries in immature teeth: A histologic and histobacteriologic study.

UNLABELLED: Descriptions of the pathologic changes in the pulp and associated apical structures of human immature teeth in response to deep caries are lacking in the literature. OBJECTIVES: This article describes the histologic events associated with the radicular pulp and the apical tissues of human immature teeth following pulp inflammation and necrosis. METHODS: Twelve immature teeth with destructive caries lesions were obtained from 8 patients. Two intact immature teeth served as controls. Teeth were extracted for reasons not related to this study and immediately processed for histopatho

Incisor pulp chamber tomographic image dataset for dental age estimation.

Accurate tooth detection, segmentation, and age estimation are critical tasks in forensic odontology, helping to identify undocumented individuals in immigration cases, unidentified persons, and in the analysis of corpses and body fragments in accidents. This dataset was assembled to support such applications, comprising images of the upper central incisors from a diverse cohort of Brazilian individuals aged 18 to 60 from the Zona da Mata Mineira, obtained using standardized Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanning protocols. Each scan includes both coronal and sagittal views, providing a

Post-failure analysis of model resin-composite restorations subjected to different chemomechanical challenges.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of different combinations of chemical and mechanical challenges on the failure load, failure mode and composition of the resulting fracture surfaces of resin-composite restorations. METHODS: Three resin composites were used to fill dentin disks (2 mm inner diameter, 5 mm outer diameter, and 2 mm thick) made from bovine incisor roots. The model restorations, half of which were preconditioned with a low-pH buffer (48 h under pH 4.5), were subjected to diametral compression with either a monotonically increasing load (fast fracture) or a

Tributyltin impairs dentin mineralization and enamel formation in cultured mouse embryonic molar teeth.

Tributyltin (TBT), earlier used as an antifouling agent in marine paints, causes damage to the aquatic ecosystem, for example, impaired shell calcification in oysters. TBT affects hard tissue mineralization even in mammals: delayed bone mineralization has been observed in rodents exposed to TBT in utero. To see if TBT interferes with tooth development, especially dental hard tissue formation, we exposed mouse E18 mandibular first and second molars to 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 microM TBT chloride in organ culture for 7-12 days. The amount of enamel was assessed and the sizes of the first molars we

Serum Vitamin D Levels at Birth Are Not Associated With the Formation of Interglobular Dentin in Deciduous Teeth of Modern New Zealand Children.

Interglobular dentin (IGD) has been used as a biomarker for vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in past populations. However, an evidence-based threshold for the levels of serum vitamin D associated with IGD occurrence has not been established. Here, we explore the association between perinatal serum vitamin D levels, presence of IGD, and biological sex in the deciduous teeth of modern children from Otago, New Zealand. Ground sections were created from the deciduous central or lateral mandibular incisors of 54 five to 6-year-old children (27 M, 27 F) with known perinatal blood vitamin D levels. Vitamin

Investigation of stress distribution within an endodontically treated tooth restored with different restorations.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Recently, metal-free restoration has become the standard in prosthetic treatment. However, it is still unclear which combination is most effective in preventing root fracture and secondary caries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of different post systems, crown materials, crown thickness and luting agents on the stress distribution around the crown margins, cervical dentin and the tip of the post. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six mandibular first premolar models were developed and analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). Two designs of crowns,

Restoration of teeth with more-viscous glass ionomer cements following radiation-induced caries.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the suitability of more-viscous conventional restorative glass ionomer cements (GICs) in a high-caries risk group of patients. METHODS: Fifteen adult patients with radiation-induced caries were treated at a dental hospital by one dentist. Two encapsulated aesthetic GICs were used in each patient to restore 146 carious lesions in the exposed dentine and cementum of 93 teeth. The restorations were assessed directly over two years for their retention, secondary caries, anatomic form, marginal integrity, marginal discolouration, and surface texture. RESULTS: Both GICs were p
