Prevalence of Posterior Crossbite for Orthodontic Treatment Timing.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and distribution of posterior crossbite in different dentition stages in a Turkish sample. STUDY DESIGN: 1554 subjects (843 girls, 711 boys) aged 4-25 years were evaluated to determine the prevalence of posterior crossbite in a Turkish sample. The subjects were classified according to four dentition stages (primary, early mixed, late mixed and permanent) and transversal occlusal status. The statistical evaluation was done by Chi-square, Fischer exact tests. RESULTS: Bilateral and unilateral crossbite on the right and left sides had the highest frequency

[The classification of defects in the dental arches of children and orthodontic treatment methods].

Dentition defects occurring in children are classified into 6 classes with subclasses in some of them. Class I includes dentition with defects in the frontal part, class II includes dentitions with distal defects. Both classes include special subclasses for dentition with defects of deciduous teeth, of permanent teeth with underdeveloped roots, and of permanent teeth with mature roots. Non-distal dentition defects (class III) are divided into two subclasses: unilateral and bilateral. Class IV includes dentition with multiple defects in various age groups. Dentition defects combined with maxill

Self-correction of posterior crossbite in childhood: a systematic review of long-term follow-up studies.

BACKGROUND: The concept that posterior crossbite is not self-correcting has been controversial in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of self-correction of crossbite in different stages of dentition in childhood. SEARCH METHODS AND SELECTION CRITERIA: A bibliographic search using the acronym PECOS was performed in five databases and in partial grey literature. Studies evaluating children with posterior crossbite in the deciduous or mixed dentition at initial examination and followed for at least 3 years were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: The data extraction of the

How Does Orofacial Trauma in Children Affect the Developing Dentition? Long-term Treatment and Associated Complications.

Each year, millions of children are injured and live with the consequences of those injuries. Through infancy and childhood, orofacial trauma caused by falls or being struck by or against objects occurs in children. The long-term implications on the developing permanent teeth are little known, even when the oral region is the second most frequently injured body area in children under 6 years of age. During this period, the developing permanent teeth may be directly involved after trauma, causing mild to severe hypoplasia, displacement, damage to the tooth germ, or an extended range of morphofu

Importance of orthodontic intervention of the Class III malocclusion in mixed dentition.

INTRODUCTION: Supervising the development of occlusion, managing problems during the transition from mixed to permanent dentition, as well as controlling environmental factors that contribute to establishing malocclusion, are important actions to achieve a Class I occlusion with facial balance. Among these problems, the malocclusions associated with dysfunctions such as mouth breathing or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), atypical swallowing and abnormal tongue position, open bites, crossbites and maxillomandibular discrepancies, and especially the Class III malocclusion can be listed.

Permanent double teeth and hypodontia in a pair of monozygotic twins: case report.

Double and congenitally missing teeth are known to be commoner in the primary dentition than the permanent. The knowledge of this trait in the permanent dentition in Africa is still poor. This paper describes the clinical findings in a pair of monozygotic Nigerian twins. This illustrates the claims of genetic basis of such conditions, which have been reported severally in developed parts of the globe but not much among the indigenous Nigerian Negroid population especially involving the permanent dentition.

Developmental defects of enamel in children with nephrotic syndrome: a cross-sectional study of proportion and independently associated factors.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the proportion, tooth distribution, and severity of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in children with nephrotic syndrome (NS), and to identify factors associated with DDE. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 237 children aged 3-18 years with primary NS. Oral examinations were performed by calibrated pediatric dentists. To account for the clustering of multiple teeth within each patient, generalized estimating equations (GEE) with an exchangeable correlation structure were used to identify factors associated with tooth-level DDE. Numeric anomalies of teeth in concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia.

Variations in tooth number in children, each of whom had supernumerary teeth and agenesis of teeth, is described. Among the 11, seven had cleft lip and palate, and two had clefting syndromes; two children had dental anomalies only. Only children who had both supernumerary teeth and congenitally missing teeth outside the area of the cleft alveolus were included. Concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia were observed in the same dentition in nine subjects, in the same jaw in eight subjects, and in the same jaw quadrant in only three subjects. Supernumerary teeth and agenesis of teeth were observed

Prosthodontic Rehabilitation with a Telescopic Prosthesis of a Nonsyndromic Oligodontia Patient.

Oligodontia is the congenital absence of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Oligodontia of permanent dentition is a rare occurrence. Preservation of the remaining deciduous dentition in such situations is important for both functional and esthetic rehabilitation of the patient. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a 16-year-old male with oligodontia of permanent teeth treated by an interdisciplinary team of prosthodontist, pedodontist, and orthodontist. The remaining deciduous dentition was endodontically treated. Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) of the d

Prevalence of supernumerary teeth in deciduous and mixed dentition.

Supernumerary teeth are the extra teeth which may have either erupted or unerupted in addition to normal dentition and are seen both in deciduous as well as permanent dentition. The incidence of supernumerary teeth shows more frequent occurrence in permanent dentition than deciduous dentition, affecting both the sexes. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown and not well understood, but thought to be the result from disturbance during the initiation and proliferation stages of tooth development. In the present study an attempt has been made to asses, its prevalence in deciduous an

Factors affecting the outcome of full pulpotomy in permanent posterior teeth diagnosed with reversible or irreversible pulpitis.

This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the success rate of full pulpotomy in permanent posterior teeth with pulpitis. The study included 105 permanent posterior teeth clinically diagnosed as reversible or irreversible pulpitis in 92 patients aged 18-82 years. All teeth underwent a full pulpotomy using mineral trioxide aggregate as a capping material and were recalled for clinical and radiographic evaluation at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. The overall success rate after the 12-month review was above 90%, and failed cases mainly occurred during the first 12 months afte

Cross-sectional study to evaluate variations in attached gingiva and gingival sulcus in the three periods of dentition.

The dimensional differences of the attached gingiva and gingival sulcus in the primary, mixed and permanent dentition were studied clinically in normal gingivae of 382 children, aged 4-15 years. The depth of the gingival sulcus and the width of keratinized gingiva were also measured. Shallow gingival sulcus was observed in the primary dentition as compared to that in permanent dentition. However, in the mixed dentition deeper sulcus was observed around the newly erupted teeth. This was attributed to deeper penetration of the instrument, at the time of eruption. The widest zone of attached ging
