UNLABELLED: Carvacrol (5-isopropyl-2-methylphenol) is a monoterpenic phenol present in the essential oil of many plants. It is the major component of the essential oil fraction of oregano and thyme. In this study, the effect of carvacrol was investigated in two behavioral models, the forced swimming and tail suspension tests in mice, to investigate the possible antidepressant effect of this substance. Additionally, the mechanisms involved in the antidepressant-like effect of carvacrol in mice were also assessed. Carvacrol (cvc) was administered orally at single doses of 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg.

Primary cardiogenic shock is a common condition with a high mortality rate. In this indication, mechanical assist plays an important part and has improved a lot over the last decade. The authors report their experience with the same assist device in patients with primary cardiogenic shock. Nineteen patients (9 dilated cardiomyopathies, 7 myocardial infarctions, 2 myocardities, 1 undetermined) were treated with an external mechanical ventricular assist device (Thoratec, Berkeley, U.S.). Fourteen patients received a biventricular assist and 5 had a uni-left ventricular assist device. Four of the

Pregnant female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated from day 12 through day 15 of gestation with procarbazine, an antineoplastic drug, and their offspring were subjected to tests of locomotor development and behavior. Treatment levels ranged from 0.5 mg/kg/day, a dose that produced no abnormalities, to 10 mg/kg/day, a dose that caused a marked micrencephaly in the absence of other teratological changes. Despite marked morphological brain changes, preweaning locomotor development, as assessed by open-field swimming activity and vertical grid climbing, was normal in all offspring. Post-weaning pass

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic arthropathy is characterized by rapidly progressive bone destruction in the setting of impaired nociceptive and proprioceptive innervation to the involved joint. It is seen most commonly in the foot and ankle, secondary to peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. Other less common sites of involvement may include the knee, hip, shoulder, and spine, depending on the underlying etiology. Neuropathic arthropathy can be associated with tabes dorsalis, a unique manifestation of late, tertiary neurosyphilis that may arise in individuals with untreated syphili

Presentation A 20 year old female attended the Emergency Department by ambulance following a collapse at a concert. On arrival she was complaining of generalised muscular pain. She had not eaten for over 12 hours and had been dancing for approximately 6 hours. The patient was known to have Very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCAD). She had a normal exam, and normal vital signs. Diagnosis A diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis was made after her creatinine kinase (CK) was found to be >100000 units/litre (Normal range < 170U/L). Her urine was dark brown with urinalysis positive for blood.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a degenerative process that is extremely frequent in today's aging population. It can result in impingement on the nerves of the cauda equina or on the thecal sac itself, and lead to debilitating symptoms such as severe leg pain, or restriction in the perimeter of ambulation, both resulting in dependency in daily activities. The impact of the disease is global and includes financial repercussions because of its involvement in the active work force group. Risk factors for the disease include some comorbidities such as obesity or smoking, daily habits such as an active

"Tug-of-war" may cause a variety of sports injuries, which has rarely been reported previously. This report described an uncommon case of a previously fit 64-year-old male who presented with abrupt onset of loss of consciousness after falling down in a game of massive tug of war including 1,500 participants as the rope snapped apart. Computed tomography (CT) scan of his abdomen revealed liver and spleen rupture. Spinal cord injury due to traumatic herniation of intervertebral disc at C5-6 level and bilateral brachial plexus injury were also noted after exploratory laparotomy with primary repai

BACKGROUND: The effect of transdermal glyceryl trinitrate (GTN, a nitrovasodilator) on clinical outcome when administered before hospital admission in suspected stroke patients is unclear. Here, we assess the safety and efficacy of GTN in the prespecified subgroup of patients who had an ischaemic stroke within the Rapid Intervention with Glyceryl trinitrate in Hypertensive stroke Trial-2 (RIGHT-2).
METHODS: RIGHT-2 was an ambulance-based multicentre sham-controlled blinded-endpoint study with patients randomised within 4 hours of onset. The primary outcome was a shift in scores on the modifie

Background and Purpose- Pilot trials suggest that glyceryl trinitrate (GTN; nitroglycerin) may improve outcome when administered early after stroke onset. Methods- We undertook a multicentre, paramedic-delivered, ambulance-based, prospective randomized, sham-controlled, blinded-end point trial in adults with presumed stroke within 4 hours of ictus. Participants received transdermal GTN (5 mg) or a sham dressing (1:1) in the ambulance and then daily for three days in hospital. The primary outcome was the 7-level modified Rankin Scale at 90 days assessed by central telephone treatment-blinded fo

Individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 3 are able to walk but they have weakness, gait impairments and fatigue. Our primary study objective was to examine longitudinal changes in the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and to evaluate whether age and SMA type 3 subtype are associated with decline in ambulatory function. Data from three prospective natural history studies were used. Seventy-three participants who performed the 6MWT more than once, at least 6 months apart, were included; follow-up ranged from 0.5-9 years. Only data from patients who completed the 6MWT were included. The mea

BACKGROUND: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a clinically relevant factor in glaucoma progression. As a dynamic parameter the IOP depends on various internal and exogenic influencing factors. Therefore, we analysed intraindividual IOD variations between ambulant care and 24-h home-monitoring using self-tonometry.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study is based on paper-based glaucoma cards of 25 patients with primary open angle glaucoma. Additionally, all patients participated in a telemedical home-monitoring study with self-measurements of IOP and blood pressure stored in an electronic patie

The aim of this study was the separate measurement of reflux of food and acid into the oesophagus in 37 healthy, ambulant subjects. This was performed by radiolabelling the food and monitoring its reflux with a small directional gamma detector, which was placed externally over the oesophagus, and connected to an ambulatory data recorder. The pH was measured with a conventional oesophageal pH electrode. This method permitted the separate characterisation of acid and neutral (food) components of gastro-oesophageal reflux. The gastric emptying characteristics of the test meal were also monitored

For many older persons, hospitalization results in functional decline despite cure or repair of the condition for which they were admitted. Hospitalization can result in complications unrelated to the problem that caused admission or to its specific treatment for reasons that are explainable and avoidable. Usual aging is often associated with functional change, such as a decline in muscle strength and aerobic capacity; vasomotor instability; reduced bone density; diminished pulmonary ventilation; altered sensory continence, appetite, and thirst; and a tendency toward urinary incontinence. BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease experience walking impairment that is incompletely explained by large-artery atherosclerotic occlusive disease and abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI). Microvascular dysfunction is associated with adverse outcomes, including amputation, but its effect on ambulation is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that skeletal muscle microvascular function directly associates with walking distance, is a more sensitive indicator of walking distance than conduit artery blood inflow, and correlates with ambulatory improvement following peripheral artery dis

INTRODUCTION: Functional ability is often impaired as a direct consequence of severe obesity. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for severe obesity.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of weight loss after bariatric surgery on patients with impaired functional ambulatory abilities due to obesity.
SETTINGS: A high-volume university-affiliated bariatric surgery center in India.
METHOD: We conducted a prospective study in a cohort of nonambulatory patients with functional disabilities (bedridden, wheelchair-bound, or walker-dependent) who underwent bariatric surgery. Data on sex, b

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that ambulation after major lower extremity amputation (LEA) is low and mortality after LEA is high. Successful prosthetic fitting after LEA has a significant quality of life benefit; however, it is unclear if there are benefits in post-LEA mortality. Our objective was to examine a contemporary cohort of patients who underwent LEA and determine if there is an association between fitting for a prosthetic and mortality.
METHODS: We reviewed all patients who underwent LEA between 2015 and 2022 at two academic health care systems in a large metropolitan city. The expos

BACKGROUND: Neonatal respiratory distress (NRD) requiring continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a common indication for inter-hospital transfer of late preterm and term neonates. The optimal composition of the inter-hospital team transfer - involving an advanced neonatal nurse and an ambulance driver or a complete team, which also includes a paediatrician - remains uncertain. Particularly when clinical interventions are required.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the occurrence of clinical interventions necessitating a complete transport team during the inter-hospital transfer of neonates with NR
