T cell involvement in persulfate triggered occupational contact dermatitis and asthma.

BACKGROUND: Ammonium and potassium persulfates may induce a variety of cutaneous and respiratory diseases. The precise underlying mechanisms, however, are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To describe a hairdresser, who developed contact dermatitis, rhinoconjuntivitis, and bronchial asthma of delayed onset after occupational exposure to hair bleaches containing persulfate salts and to provide evidence for a common T-cell mediated mechanism responsible for the clinical manifestations. METHODS: We performed skin testing, routine histologic and immunohistochemical examination of the skin reaction after prick

Occupational dermatitis in Danish gardeners and greenhouse workers (II). Etiological factors.

The aim of the study was to assess the distribution of different types of occupational eczema among employees in floristry and detect the allergens most commonly involved. Based on a postal questionnaire, 253 gardeners and greenhouse workers with occupational skin symptoms and 52 randomly-selected without symptoms were examined and patch tested. Routine tests comprised the standard series, the Compositae mix, feverfew and 3 fungicides, with additional testing based on case records. 184 persons from the symptom group and 1 from the random group had occupational eczema. Irritant occupational con

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by diethylenetriamine in carbonless copy paper.

Carbonless copy paper, or 'no carbon required' (NCR) paper, has often been implicated as the cause of skin, respiratory, or general symptoms, but allergy has been verified in only a few cases. A 43-year-old machinist whose work involved the manufacture of NCR paper developed occupational dermatitis on the hands. On patch testing, both the NCR paper and 1 of the chemicals used to produce the microcapsules of the NCR paper, namely diethylenetriamine (DETA), provoked an allergic reaction. Analysis of the paper showed that it contained enough DETA to induce allergic contact dermatitis. People who

Occupational contact dermatitis in painters: an analysis of patch test data from the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group.

BACKGROUND: Painters are among the occupational groups that most commonly experience occupational contact dermatitis, but few investigations exist concerning this occupation. OBJECTIVES: To characterize painters with contact dermatitis and identify the most common allergens associated with the occupation. Materials and methods. All patch test results of 219 painters and 1095 matched controls registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group between 2001 and 2010 were analysed. RESULTS: Hand eczema (p < 0.0001) and occupational contact dermatitis (p < 0.0001) were observed significantly more

[A case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by sinomenine hydrochloride].

Sinomenine hydrochloride is an alkaloid preparation commonly used in clinical practice in traditional Chinese medicine, and allergic reactions induced by occupational exposure to it are relatively rare in clinical settings. This article analyzes a case of allergic contact dermatitis in a medical worker after occupational exposure to sinomenine hydrochloride. The patient developed generalized skin rashes with the fingertips as the initial site three months after exposure to sinomenine hydrochloride. The treatment effect was poor without cessation of exposure, while symptoms significantly improv

[Assessment of the Mathias criteria for establishing occupational causation of contact dermatitis].

BACKGROUND: Dermatoses account for up to 30% of occupational diseases. Of these, 90% correspond to contact dermatitis, a disease associated with a marked economic burden and considerably impaired quality of life. In 1989, Toby Mathias proposed 7 criteria to assess the relationship between contact dermatitis and occupation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the Mathias criteria for establishing occupational causation of contact dermatitis in patients with dermatoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive study of 103 patients with dermatoses, attended consecutively between January and March of 200

Occupational dermatitis in a milk industry worker due to Kathon CG.

The allergenic properties of the preservative Kathon CG have been well known since 1980. Kathon CG is regularly used in many industrial processes because of its germicidal powers. The most common sources of exposure for people are cosmetics and toiletries. Occupational contact dermatitis is unusual among milk industry workers because of the high level of factory automation.

Occupational hand dermatitis in a tertiary referral dermatology clinic in Taipei.

Occupational skin disease is one of the most common occupational diseases. The hand is the most frequent site of involvement in occupational skin disease. We interviewed and examined patients seen in the Contact Dermatitis Clinic of the National Taiwan University Medical Center, a tertiary referral center in Taipei City. For patients suspected of having allergic skin diseases, patch testing was carried out using the European standard series and suspected allergens. Occupational hand dermatitis (OHD) was diagnosed according to medical history, work exposure, physical examination, and patch test

Barrier creams in the prevention of occupational contact dermatitis--an experimental study.

Experimental evaluation of two barrier creams has been carried out. One of these creams was composed of hydrocarbon components; the other had, in addition, silicone oil and cetaceum. The protective properties of these creams on rats and guinea pigs have been examined. It was found that investigated creams exerted an inhibiting effect on the absorption of chromium and nickel through the skin of rats from aqueous solutions. Moreover, the creams demonstrated a pronounced protective action on guinea pigs sensitized to chromium.
