Dietary antioxidant intake and the risk of developing Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: We investigated in a cohort study, for the first time using 7-day food diaries (7-DFDs), for age-dependent inverse associations with antioxidants, which have anti-carcinogenic properties, and development of Barrett's oesophagus (BO) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC). METHODS: A total of 24,068 well individuals completed 7-DFDs and donated blood. Vitamins C and E, carotenes, zinc and selenium intakes, and plasma vitamin C were measured. Participants were monitored for 15 years for BO and OAC. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated for: quintiles of intake and in participants younger

Factors associated with Mediterranean diet adherence in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Little is known about the importance of the Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) and dietary intake as environmental neuroprotective factors in Huntington's disease (HD); so, we evaluated and analyzed the prevalence and factors associated with MeDi adherence, and dietary intake in HD. METHODS: Spanish participants of the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN) Registry study diagnosed with HD or premanifest HD gene carriers were included from June 2012 to August 2013. Self-reported dietary intake was collected by 3-day dietary record, MeDi adherence was assessed by 0-9 range (propo

Dietary patterns and risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus in Fijian, Japanese and Vietnamese populations.

Diabetes mellitus is now a serious and increasing problem in Asian countries, where dietary patterns have shifted toward Westernized foods and people are becoming more sedentary. In order to elucidate the relationship of dietary habits to the development of diabetic risk factors, the dietary patterns of 200 Fijian, 171 Japanese and 181 Vietnamese women of 30-39 years of age were investigated using 3 day-24 h recall or dietary records. Anthropometric measurements and glycosuria tests were also conducted. The dietary trends of Fijians and Japanese have changed drastically in the past 50 years, w

Fat, caloric intake, and obesity: lifestyle risk factors for breast cancer.

Dietary fat is a likely important determinant of postmenopausal breast cancer as part of an intricate and inseparable interaction of lifesty … nderestimate their usual dietary intake, measured by either food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) or diet records. A dietary measurement model that accounts for this underreporting demonstrated that FFQs and diet records may not be able to detect a dietary fat-breast cancer association because of measurement error biases. Although meta-analysis of epidemiologic …

Differences in the Concentration of Vitamin D Metabolites in Plasma Due to the Low-Carbohydrate-High-Fat Diet and the Eastern European Diet-A Pilot Study.

Vitamin D deficiency is a global problem with many health consequences, and it is currently recommended to supplement vitamin D. Change of diet should also be considered to ensure adequate vitamin D in the human body. The aim of this study was to assess the concentration of vitamin D metabolites in two different groups: one group on the low-carbohydrate-high-fat (LCHF) diet and the other group on the Eastern European (EE) diet. In the first stage, 817 participants declaring traditional EE diet or LCHF diet were investigated. Nutrition (self-reported 3-day estimated food record) and basic anthr

Diet quality in patients with stroke.

OBJECTIVE: A healthy diet is associated with reduced risk for stroke, myocardial infarction, cancer and death. We examined the prevalence of a healthy diet in patients with a recent stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). METHODS: We recruited a convenience sample of 95 patients with a recent ischaemic stroke or TIA. Using information from a 125-item Food Frequency Questionnaire, we calculated dietary quality and the percentage of patients meeting recommended daily intake (RDI) for common macronutrients and elements. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 66 years (SD: 16) and 46% were wo

Diets high in n-3 fatty acids are associated with lower arterial stiffness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a latent profile analysis.

Supplementation with n-3 fatty acids can influence inflammation and markers of arterial stiffness that are increased in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it is unknown whether specific patterns of dietary fatty acid intake are similarly associated. In a longitudinal study, eighty-six RA patients reported their dietary intake and had arterial stiffness measured using the augmentation index (AIx) at baseline and 8 months. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was performed to characterise patterns of fatty acid intake using sixteen major fatty acids. Models for two to six profiles were c

Association between diet and gallstones of cholesterol and pigment among patients with cholecystectomy: a case-control study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cholesterol gallstones is high in Western populations, while pigment gallstones are common in Asian populations. Dietary factors are suggested to be associated with gallstone risk, but their relationship with gallstone type has not been evaluated. This study investigated the association between diet and risk of cholesterol gallstone or pigment gallstone in a Korean population whose dietary pattern and type of gallstone were changed during the last 30 years. METHODS: Patients with cholesterol (n = 40) and pigment (n = 59) gallstones were recruited after laparoscop

Evidence of high sugar intake, and low fibre and mineral intake, in the gluten-free diet.

BACKGROUND: The only therapy for coeliac disease (CD) is a long-term gluten-free diet (GFD). Little is known about the detailed composition of such a diet. AIM: To clarify the nutritional composition of a GFD and to compare it with a non-GFD diet in representative non-CD populations. METHODS: A total of 139 consecutive patients with CD were invited to fill in a prospective validated 5-day food diary, of whom data from 93 were analysed. Results were compared with data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of Adults and the UK Women's Cohort Study (UKWCS). RESULTS: Individuals consuming

Dietary intervention with emphasis on folate intake reduces serum lipids but not plasma homocysteine levels in hyperlipidemic patients.

Hyperlipidemia and hyperhomocysteinemia are regarded as major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Medical nutrition therapy (MNT), which involves a combination of nutritional diagnosis, therapy, and counseling for at-risk patients, has been proposed as a protocol to control these risk factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an intensive MNT, specifically tailored to Korean hyperlipidemic patients, on levels of serum lipids and plasma homocysteine. Forty hyperlipidemic patients with blood levels of total cholesterol > or = 200 mg/dL or triacylglycerol > or = 150

Adverse events and tolerability of ketogenic diets - a systematic literature analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ketogenic diets (KDs) are becoming increasingly popular in the treatment of various diseases, not just pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Despite the growing use of this dietary approach and its economic rationale, a systematic overview of the associated adverse events remains conspicuously absent. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines in the electronic database PubMed. Prospective interventional studies documenting adverse events associated with ketogenic diets published between 2019 and 2024 were included. The recorded adverse events

Neuroleptic-induced striatal damage in rats: a study of antioxidant treatment using accelerometric and immunocytochemical methods.

RATIONALE: Investigators have postulated that neuroleptic medications may affect the motor system through the creation of free radicals. Also, structural brain changes related to oxidative damage may disrupt normal striatal function. OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study were to examine whether an antioxidant diet reduced the abnormal movements caused by long-term neuroleptic exposure and to examine structural effects within specific striatal regions in rats. METHODS: Rats were given a basal diet or a diet high in antioxidants for 4 months, and treated with 10 mg/kg fluphenazine decanoate or se

Influence of vitamin deficiency and level of dietary protein on the incidence of leg problems in broiler chicks.

Diets containing either 22 or 30% protein were supplemented with a vitamin mix where one of 11 added vitamins were singly eliminated from the mix. Male, day-old broilers were fed these diets to 3 weeks of age, and weight gains, feed utilization, and leg problems were recorded. In general, the higher protein diet did not result in a greater incidence of leg problems; however, it did alter performance of several of the vitamin-deficient diets as compared to the lower protein diet. Of the 11 vitamins studied only nonsupplementation of riboflavin markedly reduced weight gain and feed utilization d
