PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to determine the indications and contraindications for balloon dacryocystoplasty.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: So far 85 patients with severe epiphora because of relative stenosis (n = 47) or occlusion (n = 38) of the nasolacrimal duct have undergone dilation. The success rates were evaluated during the acute phase and the follow-up period of 6-12 months. Treatment failures and recurrence of stenosis were analyzed and compared to the clinical and dacryocystographic indications prior to treatment.

Anal dilatation is used as a simple method of treatment and has been used for both anal fissure and haemorrhoids. This study examined longer-term results among a cohort of 162 patients, 132 of whom responded to a detailed questionnaire, an 82% response (66 patients were male; age range 17-75 years, median 42 years). Balloon valvuloplasty of pulmonary stenosis has become the treatment of choice in children and adults. This is a report about the long term results in adult patients. Forty-six patients (mean age 37 +/- 17 years) with pulmonary stenosis were treated between 1984 and 1994 by this method. A 31 year old man was hospitalised with general fatigue and epigastric pain. Choledochal cyst is a rare pathology in western countries and the typical signs and symptoms are not always present at the onset. The diagnosis is often difficult and it needs a long time to be clear. In this paper we review our recent experience with this pathology (8 patients) and particularly we point out the problems of the delate in the diagnosis and the best choice to study these patients.

During the period 1987-92, seven patients (two girls and five boys under one year of age) were dilated for strictures following oesophageal atresia operation. The total number of dilatations was 47. Six out of seven patients were treated successfully. No sedation/anaesthesia was used. There was one episode of cyanosis and brief respiratory arrest, and two incidents of intramural tears. None of these episodes required surgical intervention. Fluoroscopically guided balloon dilatation of oesophageal strictures is considered a safe and efficient treatment, also for outpatients.

Two adult Hampshire rams, unrelated and from separate farms, were examined for the cause of intermittent bloat and, or anorexia which lasted for three to six weeks and caused depression and cachexia. After resection of a cardia carcinoma a gastric obstruction was observed. Because of a severe esophagitis the planned operation could not be … s both, under endoscopic and fluoroscopic control and inflated. No complication was observed. After dilatation of pylorus the patient was able to take food as usual. In the following weeks the esophagitis was treated and the pyloroplasty was performed successfully.

Dilatation in the upper limb of a duplex ureter is usually secondary to obstruction and may be associated with a ureterocele. By contrast, vesicoureteric reflux is the usual cause of a dilated lower moiety ureter. We report 3 cases in which unusual or complex causes of dilatation of 1 limb of a duplex ureter were demonstrated.

The paper reports on a case of congenital cystic dilatation of the main bile duct in a female patient, 3 years old, with a clinical evolution of the disease from 2 years old. The history of rigid ureterorenoscopy and the development of the Ureteromat are briefly described. The technical principles of the Ureteromat, the technique for its use, and the basic principles for performing ureterorenoscopy aided by this irrigation system are described.
