Racial discrimination, racial trauma, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder: the role of emotion dysregulation as a mediating factor in Black, African, and Afrodiasporic people in Germany.

Background: Little is known about how racial discrimination affects the mental health of Black, African, and Afrodiasporic people in Germany. Empirical evidence has begun to point to racial trauma and (complex-)post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a possible consequence of experiencing racial discrimination, but knowledge on how individual psychological processes may influence the development of racial trauma and PTSD is scarce. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the influence of racial discrimination on racial trauma and symptoms of PTSD and complex PTSD in Black, African, a

A visual analog scale to measure psychological and physical pain: A preliminary validation of the PPP-VAS in two independent samples of depressed patients.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological pain lies at the heart of human experience. However, it may also be abnormally intense and/or prolonged in pathological states, with negative outcomes. A simple and reliable measure of psychological pain for clinical use would be useful. In this study, we present a preliminary validation of a simple visual analog scale jointly measuring psychological and physical pain. METHODS: Two samples of adult (non elderly) depressed patients and healthy controls were independently recruited in two locations in Canada and the USA (N = 46/48 and 200/20, respectively). Six dimensio

Sexual risk as an outcome of social oppression: data from a probability sample of Latino gay men in three U.S. cities.

Based on data from a probability sample of 912 Latino gay men in 3 U.S. cities, a multivariate model of sexual risk was tested, including experiences of homophobia, racism, and poverty as predictors. Participants reported multiple instances of verbal and physical abuse, rude mistreatment, and discrimination on account of their sexual orientation and their race or ethnicity. Many reported experiences of poverty, such as inability to pay for basic necessities of food or shelter. Men who reported more instances of social discrimination and financial hardship were more psychologically distressed a

Empirical psychological modeling of chest pain: a comparative study.

In this study the psychological profiles of 67 patients with noncardiac chest pain (NCA) and 47 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) were analyzed to construct an empirical-psychological model that would be able to discriminate these two groups. All patients were suffering from chest pain at the time of referral by their general practitioner. The noncardiac patients were significantly younger, more often female, single, and nonsmokers. The two groups differed significantly on anxiety, somatization, obsessive compulsive behavior, psychoneuroticism, and hyperventilation. Logistic regressi

Perirhinal cortex lesions impair feature-negative discrimination.

The role of the perirhinal cortex in inhibitory eyeblink conditioning was examined. In Experiment 1, rats were given lesions of the perirhinal cortex or control surgery and subsequently trained with a feature-negative discrimination procedure followed by summation and retardation tests for conditioned inhibition. Perirhinal cortex lesions impaired, but did not prevent acquisition of feature-negative discrimination. Results from the summation test showed that rats with perirhinal cortex lesions could not generalize feature-negative discrimination to a new stimulus. There were no group differenc

Psychological distress, stigma, and intersectional marginalization in lesbian and bisexual cisgender women in Chinese higher education: a thematic analysis guided by minority stress theory.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian and bisexual cisgender women in Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs) face compounded psychological distress at the intersection of gender- and sexuality-based stigma. Despite growing evidence of mental health disparities among LGBTQ populations in China, the mechanisms through which structural marginalization is internalized in educational settings remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To identify how structural stigma is translated into internalized psychological harm among lesbian and bisexual cisgender women in Chinese HEIs, through specific, theoretically specif

Reinforcing and discriminative stimulus effects of 4-fluorobutyrfentanyl, 4-fluoroisobutyrfentanyl, and isobutyrfentanyl in male rats.

RATIONALE: 4-fluorobutyrfentanyl (4F-BF), 4-fluoroisobutyrfentanyl (4F-iBF), and isobutyrfentanyl (iBF) are isomers of butyrfentanyl. Despite these fentanyl analogs being directly involved in numerous fatal overdoses, their abuse liability profiles have yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the reinforcing effects of 4F-BF, 4F-iBF, and iBF on drug self-administration and their relationship to the interoceptive effects of heroin via drug discrimination. METHODS: Rats were trained to self-administer heroin (50 μg/kg/inf) under a fixed ratio (FR) 1 schedule. After 10 days

The effects of hippocampal dentate gyrus lesions on categorical face perception.

Traditionally considered a memory structure, the hippocampus may contribute to visual perception in fundamental ways. Recent evidence suggests that the ability to differentiate highly confusable unfamiliar faces could involve pattern separation, a mnemonic process mediated by the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Hippocampal involvement, however, may be influenced by existing face memories. We tested BL, an individual with rare selective bilateral dentate gyrus lesions accompanied by compromised pattern separation, and 34 control participants to investigate these possibilities. Participants were admi

Symbol-string sensitivity and children's reading.

In this study of primary school children, a novel 'symbol-string' task is used to assess sensitivity to the position of briefly presented non-alphabetic but letter-like symbols. The results demonstrate that sensitivity in the symbol-string task explains a unique proportion of the variability in children's contextual reading accuracy. Moreover, developmental dyslexic readers show reduced sensitivity in this task, compared to chronological age controls. The results suggest that limitations set by visuo-spatial processes and/or attentional iconic memory resources may constrain children's reading

An analysis of a group teaching procedure for persons with developmental disabilities.

This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. Three teachers and three groups of students participated. Results showed that the teachers increased their rates of questions and instructions, positive feedback, and use of functional materials, but they reduced their rate of prompts to almost zero. The pentylenetetrazole-cue antagonist actions of bretazenil (Ro 16-6028) as compared to midazolam.

In order to compare the potencies of bretazenil (Ro 16-6028) and midazolam (MDZ) to antagonize the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) cue, rats were trained to discriminate between 15 mg/kg IP PTZ and saline (FR10, food reinforced). Additionally, other rats were trained to discriminate between 1.0 mg/kg IP MDZ and saline in order to investigate the degree of generalization of bretazenil to MDZ, and to test for the antagonizing effects of PTZ. Both bretazenil and MDZ were able to block the PTZ cue. Bretazenil was about 60 times more potent than MDZ in this respect. In tests for response generalization, b

[The problem of insuring the diagnosis of psycho-organic syndrome. A comparison between medical judgments and psychometric test results (author's transl)].

A comparison was made between diagnostic decisions made by psychiatrists about memory and affective disturbances which are assumed to be typical of Psycho-Organic Syndrome and the results of psychometric evaluations of mental functioning. Some correlations could be demonstrated, especially for memory. However, the classification of individual patients showed a high percentage of different assignments between inferences of psychiatrists and test results; very often the patient was categorized as disturbed by the psychiatrist but not by tests. The claim to replicate the medical diagnosis by mean

Psychological profiles among people with HIV: A latent profile analysis and examination of the relationship with interpersonal personality.

People living with HIV (PWH) often experience an increased vulnerability to psychiatric disorders as a result of social stigma and discrimination. This study utilized latent profile analysis on a sample of 3040 Chinese PWH to identify distinct psychological profiles. Furthermore, the study investigated the relationships between these profiles with interpersonal personalities, demographic characteristics, social variables and disease-related variables using a three-step regression (R3STEP). The findings from the latent profile analysis revealed that the psychological symptoms of PWH can be cate

Psychosocial impact and stigma on men who have sex with men due to monkeypox.

BACKGROUND: The recent Monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak has disproportionately affected men who have sex with men (MSM), amplifying stigma and discrimination. While prior research examined media portrayals and public perceptions, little is known about MSM's direct experiences. To address this gap, we assess discrimination, stigma, and psychosocial impact across social and healthcare settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using a structured, pilot-tested survey to assess discrimination against MSM in media, family, socio-occupational, and healthcare environments. Prevalence and correlates of substance use among trans female youth ages 16-24 years in the San Francisco Bay Area.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is highly prevalent among transgender (trans*) females and has been associated with negative health outcomes, including HIV infection. Little is known about psychosocial risk factors that may influence the onset of substance use among trans*female youth, which can contribute to health disparities during adulthood. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of a study on HIV risk and resilience among trans*female youth (N=292). Prevalence of substance use was assessed and multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between postt

Experiential Avoidance and Emotion Dysregulation as Mediators in the LGBTQ Minority Stress Model.

Gender and sexual minorities are at increased risk for psychological disorders compared to the general population. The minority stress model has been proposed to explain these elevated rates of psychological distress. Per this model, minority stress factors (e.g., prejudice, discrimination, rejection, internalized homophobia/ transphobia) combine to create a unique stress which negatively impacts the mental health of gender and sexual minority individuals. With support for the general minority stress model established, attention has turned to investigating possible mediators in this model. In

Perceived discrimination, social support, and perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Perceived stress among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) was associated with severe mental health problems and risk behaviors. Discrimination toward PLWH in China is prevalent. Both perceived discrimination and social supports are determinants of the stress level among PLWH. Psychological support services for PLWH in China are scarce. It is unknown whether social support is a buffer between the perceived discrimination and perceived stress. With written consent, this study surveyed 258 PLWH recruited from multiple sources in two cities in China. Instruments were validated in previous or the p

Influence of training history on ethanol discrimination in rats.

The compound stimulus hypothesis of ethanol discrimination predicts that a history of training to discriminate drugs that mimic individual elements of the ethanol stimulus should attenuate stimulus control by other stimulus elements (associative blocking). Rats were trained initially to discriminate either chlordiazepoxide (5 mg / kg s.c., n = 10) or dizocilpine (0.08 mg / kg i.p., n = 10) from vehicle in two-lever procedures with food reinforcers presented on a tandem variable-interval fixed ratio schedule. Control rats received 'sham training' (vehicle injections only, n = 9). All subjects w
