Mediating social anxiety and disordered eating: the role of expressive suppression.

Social anxiety and disordered eating frequently overlap, and evidence suggests that emotional suppression may be an important mediating factor. The present study examines the relationships among social anxiety, emotional suppression, and disordered eating in a non-clinical sample of 160 undergraduate women. Participants completed self-report measures for social anxiety, disordered eating, expressive suppression, depression, and negative affect. Results from mediation analyses indicate that the relationship between social anxiety and disordered eating is fully mediated by expressive suppression

Exploratory and displacement behavior in transgenic mice expressing high levels of brain TNF-alpha.

Studies reported recently have shown that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) a cytokine released by macrophages and monocytes plays a key role in inflammatory processes and immune and neuro-endocrine regulation. TNF-alpha is also produced in the central nervous system (CNS). However, the role of this cytokine in the CNS is largely unknown, although evidence indicates that it is involved in various neurobehavioral manifestations. Using transgenic mice expressing high amounts of murine TNF-alpha transgene in the neurons of the CNS, we investigated the stereotyped, exploratory, and displacem

Displaced aggression predicts switching deficits in people with temporal lobe epilepsy.

This study examined the relationship between task-switching abilities and displaced aggression in people with temporal lobe epilepsy (PWE). Participants (35 PWE and 35 healthy controls) performed emotion and gender classification switching tasks. People with temporal lobe epilepsy showed larger switch costs than controls. This result reflected task-switching deficits in PWE. People with temporal lobe epilepsy reported higher anger rumination, revenge planning, and behavioral displaced aggression compared with controls. Displaced aggression was a significant predictor of the task switch costs.

Primate displacement activities as an ethopharmacological model of anxiety.

Using a within-subject cross-over, vehicle-controlled design, we investigated the acute effects of benzodiazepine receptor ligands with different mechanisms of action on the displacement activities (scratching, self-grooming, and body shake) of seven male macaques living in social groups. Our aim was to test the discriminative validity of displacement activities as an ethopharmacological model of anxiety. Subjects were given i.m. lorazepam (0.10, 0.20, 0.25 mg/ kg) and FG 7142 (0.1, 0.3, 1.0 mg/kg). The frequency of displacement activities was decreased by the anxiolytic lorazepam and increase

Spinal cord stimulation in the treatment of chronic pain: from evidence to clinical practice - part 1.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. Pharmacotherapy remains the primary treatment for this condition, although non-pharmacological modalities such as physical and psychological therapy are also recommended. STATE OF THE ART: Due to the limited efficacy of conventional therapies, interventional modalities such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) are increasingly used. Several theories have been formulated to explain the analgesic mechanism of SCS. These include the gate control theory, neurochemical and immunological mechanisms, syn

Children and youth seeking asylum in the United States: Reported challenges, supports, and future aspirations.

Children and youth seeking asylum encounter a range of unique experiences and obstacles in their efforts to secure protected immigration status. This study used a consensual qualitative research approach to analyze data that centered lived experience voice gathered from first-person interviews with 12 adults, six men, and six women aged 18-29 years, who entered the United States as minor asylum seekers. Results indicated that they experienced premigratory exposure to violence or harm, psychological distress, financial instability, and obstacles to health care. Participants also reported fear,

Understanding the contextual determinants, barriers and facilitators of mental health for adolescent girls and young women in Burundi: Insights from lived experiences.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Burundi face substantial mental health risks stemming from trauma, displacement, bereavement, and sexual violence, compounded by poverty, social upheaval, and limited mental health services. Stigma and marginalization further constrain help-seeking. This study examines the distinct mental health challenges faced by AGYW in Burundi, exploring how socio-cultural and structural factors shape their psychological well-being and identifying key barriers and facilitators to accessing mental health support. Seven focus group discussions (FGDs; total n = 55; 7

Adolescent Refugee Potential Traumatic Experience and Mental Health in Gambella Region in Ethiopia: A Model Examining Mediating Effects of Coping and Resilience.

Background: Refugees often experience multiple traumatic events due to persecution, conflict, and displacement, which can result in poor mental health outcomes. Objective: The current study examined whether coping and resilience mediate the relationship between traumatic experience(s) and mental health outcomes and whether these indirect effects were moderated by age, gender, and refugee camp duration. Method: A cross-sectional, correlational study design was employed. Data were collected from 14 July 2019 to 28 August 2019. A sample of 414 adolescent refugees from two refugee camps in the Gam

Trauma history and psychopathology in war-affected refugee children referred for trauma-related mental health services in the United States.

There is an increasing need to deliver effective mental health services to refugee children and adolescents across the United States; however, the evidence base needed to guide the design and delivery of services is nascent. We investigated the trauma history profiles, psychopathology, and associated behavioral and functional indicators among war-affected refugee children presenting for psychological treatment. From the National Child Traumatic Stress Network's Core Data Set, 60 war-affected refugee children were identified (51.7% males, mean age = 13.1 years, SD = 4.13). Clinical assessments

Benign symmetric lipomatosis of the tongue in Madelung's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Madelung's disease is characterized by benign, non-encapsulated accumulations of fat in a symmetrical manner. Although rare, symmetrical lipomatosis involving the tongue exclusively has been previously reported. Here another case is presented of Madelung's disease involving the tongue. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old woman was referred with the diagnosis of Madelung's disease, with slight difficulty in swallowing, dysarthria and dyspnoea while sleeping due to tongue swelling. Clinical examination revealed multiple, large disfiguring soft masses involving neck, upper arms and hips. Th

The surgeon's role in chronic peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis has been the mainstay for children with end-stage renal disease until a successful renal transplant is accomplished. Chronic peritoneal dialysis has been a second choice and, in special circumstances such as for small infants, children without vascular access, or patients unstable on hemodialysis, it is the only alternative. Recent refinements in peritoneal catheters and dialysis have added to the many medical, psychological, and economic advantages, resulting in the displacement of hemodialysis by peritoneal dialysis as the most frequently used modality. Forty-six patients were f

Refugee social network growth post-resettlement: Impact of a learning, advocacy, and social support intervention.

Understanding and supporting social network growth among forcibly displaced people is vital as they rebuild their lives. This study examined data from a randomized controlled trial of the Refugee Well-being Project (RWP), a 6-month community-based intervention involving university students and refugees working together to reduce psychological distress and expand social networks. Multilevel growth curve analyses were conducted across four time points over 12 months among 290 recently resettled Afghan, Great Lakes African, Iraqi, and Syrian refugees in the United States. Results showed that inte

Long-term follow-up study on the Maquet procedure with special reference to the causes of failure.

Thirty-nine patients with symptomatic osteoarthrosis (OA) of the patellofemoral joint were treated with 42 anterior tibial tubercle elevations, also known as the Maquet procedure. The patients all had symptomatic OA of the patellofemoral joint that fell into one of three categories: old patellar fracture, chronic patellar subluxation, or postpatellectomy pain. In the latter group, the OA was manifested by erosions of trochlear articular cartilage from the articulating quadriceps tendon-patellar ligament suture line. All 39 patients had a 1.5-2.5-cm tibial tubercle elevation with medial displac

A series of tibial fractures treated conservatively.

Two hundred and two fractures of the tibia have been reviewed. They were treated by a standard, conservative method; with a Phemister graft when union was delayed and a pseudarthrosis threatened. The classifications of Charnley (1968) and Nicoll (1964) have proved to be useful in assessing results and these complement each other. The factors that influence bony union include damage to the interosseous membrane, the degree of the displacement and comminution of the fracture, and injury to soft tissues. Infection has a very unfavourable influence on bone union and leads to the majority of bad se

Arts as a resource in global mental health: a mixed-methods exploratory study of therapeutic arts, photography and cultural archiving with formerly captured Yazidi women.

OBJECTIVES: The 2014 genocide perpetrated by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) against the Yazidi community resulted in widespread psychological trauma, mass displacement and targeted destruction of cultural heritage. This exploratory study examined a therapeutic arts and photography intervention with formerly captured Yazidi women, alongside the participatory development of a cultural archive, as an integrated approach to supporting mental health, cultural resilience and survivor authorship in a postconflict setting. DESIGN: Mixed-methods exploratory study using a pre-post quantitative

Psychological and pharmacological interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder and comorbid mental health problems following complex traumatic events: Systematic review and component network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex traumatic events associated with armed conflict, forcible displacement, childhood sexual abuse, and domestic violence are increasingly prevalent. People exposed to complex traumatic events are at risk of not only posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also other mental health comorbidities. Whereas evidence-based psychological and pharmacological treatments are effective for single-event PTSD, it is not known if people who have experienced complex traumatic events can benefit and tolerate these commonly available treatments. Furthermore, it is not known which components o

Mitigating Psychological Problems Associated with the 2023 Wildfires in Alberta and Nova Scotia: Six-Week Outcomes from the Text4Hope Program.

Background: In 2023, wildfires led to widespread destruction of property and displacement of residents in Alberta and Nova Scotia, Canada. Previous research suggests that wildfires increase the psychological burden of impacted communities, necessitating population-level interventions. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-based text message interventions, Text4HopeAB and Text4HopeNS, were launched in Alberta and Nova Scotia, respectively, during the 2023 wildfire season to support the mental health of impacted individuals. Objectives: The study examines the effectiveness of Text4HopeNS and Text4

Ultra-processed Foods, Cancer, and Early-onset Cancer: A Comprehensive Review.

The classification of foods according to their degree of processing, and particularly the concept of ultra-processed foods, is relatively new. Consumption of ultra-processed foods has increased markedly worldwide in recent decades. Their growing consumption has coincided with a rising global burden of cancer, including marked increases in several cancers diagnosed before age 50 years. In this comprehensive review, we summarize trends in ultra-processed food consumption and the sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral characteristics associated with higher intake. We further review the e
