Gastro-esophageal barotrauma in diving: similarities with Mallory-Weiss syndrome.

Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS) is a well-defined entity in clinical medicine. However, the development of such a syndrome as a result of overpressure barotrauma of the stomach after repeated shallow-water scuba dives is rare. Also rare is the delayed onset of the MWS, approximately 20 hours after the dives. The causes of development of MWS in connection with scuba diving are discussed. The main causes seem to be the repeated changes of gas volume in the stomach with subsequent pressure forces toward the cardia in the course of repeated dives. The possibility of serious diving accident due to ove…

Pulmonary oedema in healthy persons during scuba-diving and swimming.

The prevalence of pulmonary oedema during scuba-diving is unknown. In our referral centre for diving accidents we have observed several episodes of pulmonary oedema in four previously healthy persons while scuba-diving or swimming. Four events were documented by physical findings, typical chest radiographic changes, and arterial hypoxaemia. Four additional episodes were identified in one of the individuals by a suggestive history. No technical problems with the diving equipment were detectable and none of the individuals reported aspiration of water. In order to gather information about the in…

Alveolar and peripheral venous gas changes during breath-hold diving.

Two fit young men were tested in a laboratory pool at 22 degrees C and 1 m depth before and after hyperventilation/breath-hold diving lasting 90 seconds. The percentages of alveolar oxygen and carbon dioxide were determined on a Polygas analyser and converted to partial pressures (PAO2 and PACO2) at an atmospheric pressure of 86 kPa at 20 degrees C, room temperature. PAO2 and PACO2 values were cross-checked by collecting expiratory gas in a Douglas bag and using the Haldane gas analyser. Peripheral venous blood was 'arterialized' and analysed for CO2 (PVCO2) using the Radiometer ABL1 gas analy…

Humpback whales match song production to dive patterns.

Understanding the function and origin of a complex animal display requires a holistic study of its performance. For example, movement is linked to sound production1,2,3,4,5,6 by enhancing or biomechanically facilitating displays,7,8 exploiting additional sensory channels,9,10 or affecting signal development and perception.1,11,12 Among animal displays, humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) song is remarkable for its hierarchical structure, syntax, and cultural transmission,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 but it has been challenging to study the whole performance. Using temporarily attached sound and mo

Ultrasound detection of lymphatic bubbles in a porcine dive model.

Ultrasound is currently the optimal imaging modality in the decompression research field for assessing intracorporeal gas. Decompression sickness (DCS) is triggered by excess gas bubble presence in the body; however, the relationship is not well understood. Presently, the decompression physiology field does not have a strong predictive DCS biomarker. In this study, we explore the presence of lymph node decompression bubbles in a porcine model after a provocative hyperbaric exposure. Porcine test subjects (n = 37 subjects) underwent an aggressive decompression profile as part of a larger study,

A Deeper Dive into the Anatomy of the Frontal Branch of the Facial Nerve.

The frontal branch of the facial nerve innervates several muscles in the upper face and is essential for facial expression and eye closure. Injury to the frontal branch can result in functional and aesthetic issues; therefore, a thorough understanding of the anatomy and course of the frontal branch is essential for safe surgery in the lateral face and temporal region. The course of the frontal branch is variable, but certain anatomic landmarks can be used to locate the nerve. Preoperative planning, careful dissection, and intraoperative monitoring are critical to minimize nerve injury in tempo

A deep dive into monogenic lupus: insights on DNASE1L3 mutation.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aim to describe the largest cohort of monogenic lupus caused by DNASE1L3 yet reported, describing its phenotypic characteristics and outcomes. METHODS: We performed a multicentre retrospective chart review for enrolled patients with childhood-onset SLE (cSLE) followed in paediatric rheumatology tertiary centers in the Sultanate of Oman. We included cSLE patients with genetically confirmed DNASE1L3 mutation. The demographic, clinical and laboratory data of the monogenic lupus cohort was compared with sporadic cSLE cohort. RESULTS: We recruited 33 patients from 15

Beyond fission and fusion-Diving into the mysteries of mitochondrial shape.

Mitochondrial shape and network formation have been primarily associated with the well-established processes of fission and fusion. However, recent research has unveiled an intricate and multifaceted landscape of mitochondrial morphology that extends far beyond the conventional fission-fusion paradigm. These less-explored dimensions harbor numerous unresolved mysteries. This review navigates through diverse processes influencing mitochondrial shape and network formation, highlighting the intriguing complexities and gaps in our understanding of mitochondrial architecture. The exploration encomp

A Deep Dive Into Retroesophageal Major Aortopulmonary Collateral Arteries.

Background: The anatomy of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs) can be highly variable with regard to number, anatomic origin, course, and relationship to the native pulmonary arteries. Some MAPCAs travel behind the esophagus (retroesophageal) and bronchus before entering the lung parenchyma. The purpose of this paper was to review the anatomy, physiology, and surgical characteristics of retroesophageal MAPCAs. Methods: This manuscript summarizes the data from a series of three papers that have focused on the subject of retroesophageal MAPCAs from our institution over the past ten

Vomitus as a cause of fatal diving accident of a commercial diver.

The forensic expertise of the victim of fatal diving accident (commercial diver), who died in depth of 41 mts due of unknown reasons, had been realised by the authors. One of the authors of the paper was present on site of the diving accident as a diving medicine specialist. The autopsy revealed, that the cause of death of the diver was suffocation due to vomitus and massive aspiration of gastric content to the airways. The commercial diving technology (full-face diving mask with oro-nasal inner mask) was used. The authors point out some peculiarities in interpretation of such a fatal diving a…

[Severe vertigo after a scuba-dive to 29 meters].

A 27-year-old flight instructor experienced 5 to 10 minutes after a scuba-dive to 29 m, which lasted totally 50 minutes, dizziness, nausea and severe vertigo. The symptoms lasted about an hour. The patient vomited several times and noted sudden onset headache and vertigo lasting the following three days. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was started 30 hours after the event because decompression sickness was suspected. Transthoracic echocardiographic evaluation showed a patent foramen ovale. Diving accidents may be caused by decompression sickness, the formation of a free intravascular gas phase (bubb…

Role of central and peripheral chemoreceptors in diving responses of ducks.

Using techniques of vascular isolation and subsequent perfusion we have investigated the effects of altering blood gas tensions, in the cerebral and carotid body circulations, on some cardiovascular responses to diving in unanesthetized ducks. After denervating the right carotid body, perfusion of the innervated left carotid body with hyperoxic blood significantly reduced diving bradycardia and reduced the increase in hindlimb vascular resistance (HLVR) in 1-min dives compared with dives in which the innervated carotid body was autoperfused. Denervation of systemic arterial baroreceptors reduc…

A dive into the untapped potential of marine compounds in counteracting neurodegeneration.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis, are characterized by the progressive breakdown and eventual loss of synapses and neurons, primarily driven by the accumulation of pathologically altered proteins within the brain and spinal cord. These diseases have complex and multifactorial etiologies, involving a broad spectrum of pathophysiological mechanisms, many of which remain incompletely understood. Nonetheless, several key pathways are consistently implicated across these conditions, including oxidat
