OBJECTIVES: Understand the prevalence of vestibular symptoms in US children. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis. SETTING: 2016 National Health Interview Survey. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Responses from the 2016 National Health Interview Survey for children ages 3 to 17 years were examined to determine the prevalence of vestibular symptoms and provider-assigned diagnoses. RESULTS: Dizziness or imbalance was reported in 3.5 (95% confidence interval, 3.1-3.9) million patients (5.6%) with a mean age of 11.5 years. Dizziness was reported in 1.2 million patients (2.0%) with a mean age of 12.7 ye…

Cervical spine radiographs in patients with vertigo and dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of cervical radiography in the study of patients with vertigo and dizziness. PATIENTS: This is a retrospective single-institution case series study of 493 patients suffering from vertigo and dizziness who were referred (from January 2011 to December 2012) to the hospital to study those symptoms. METHODS: We studied cervical radiographies, CT and MRI of the cervical spine made in the sample and the radiological findings. We analyzed demographic characteristics, presence of psychiatric pathology and emergency assistance due to ver…

Relationship of physical distress to dizziness in patients with fibromyalgia.

CONCLUSIONS: The feelings of dizziness and unsteadiness of the patients with fibromyalgia supposed specifically amplified by the hypersensitivity mechanism of CSS (central sensitivity syndrome) of them. The severity of subjective pain and physical distress according to the questionnaires were not correlated with the objective body sway on the stabilometer. OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia manifests primarily as chronic pain of the entire body, but is also often associated with a variety of physical symptoms including dizziness and unsteadiness. This study assessed whether objective measures of body s…

Prevalence and correlates of dizziness in the Ibadan Study of Ageing.

Dizziness is common among older people, but little is known about its prevalence and risk factors in the sub-Saharan population. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of dizziness and its sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical correlates in 1,299 subjects--551 men (42.4%) and 748 women (57.6%), aged 65 years and older (mean: 77.3 ± 6.3)--who lived in the Yoruba-speaking areas of Nigeria. Among this group, 318 persons reported dizziness, which represents a prevalence of 24.5%. Univariate analysis of sociodemographic and lifestyle variables revealed that low economi…

Predictive capability of historical data for diagnosis of dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: The study examines categorical responses to questions on a comprehensive dizziness questionnaire, to find the overall predictive power of the questionnaire, and to identify which question(s) are most predictive of each diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTING: Specialized dizziness and balance center at a tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 619 patients (aged 19-89 yr, of whom 60% are women and 40% are men) diagnosed with 1 of 23 types of dizziness or postural instability. INTERVENTION: All patients were administered a standard 163-item dizziness que…

[An oto-neurological approach to the acutely dizzy patient].

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuronitis and Menière's disease cause most cases of acute vertigo. However, doctors must consider central neurological reasons to vertigo. If it is determined that a patient has oto-neurological vertigo, the next task is to determine whether the patient has a peripheral or a central cause of vertigo, if the condition is potentially lethal and if there is a need for acute radiological imaging and/or medical intervention. This review highlights the oto-neurological approach to the dizzy patient with particular focus on the patient's history, clin

[Somatic symptoms in those hospitalized for dizziness or vertigo].

Anxiety and depression greatly affect the prognosis of and burden on subjects seen for dizziness or vertigo, who usually report multiple somatic symptoms. We studied the prevalence of these symptoms in 145 subjects hospitalized for dizziness or vertigo and taking part in 4-day group vestibular rehabilitation. Questionnaires given to determine the prevalence of somatic symptoms assessed headache, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, stomachache, chest pain, palpitations, dyspnea, general fatigue, and stress. Quantitation used aerical rating scale (NRS). Anxiety and depression were assessed using t…

[Causes and diagnostics of dizziness of central origin in children].

Dizziness and vertigo are symptoms caused by several etiological factors, they are result of general diseases, within anemia. They are associated with several diseases of the organ of hearing and balance, which are under laryngological care, and one of most important tests to distinguish vertigo of central and peripheral origin is videonystagmography. Several diseases of the central nervous system cause instability of posture and gait. Psychogenic feeling of being insecure and unsafe makes the diagnostics more complicated. Vertigo of central origin in children can be a first symptom of severe …

[Incidence of vertigo and dizziness disorders at a university hospital].

Subjects were 626 patients reporting vertigo or dizziness seen at the University Hospital Department of Otolaryngology from April 2001 to September 2003. Patients were diagnosed based on diagnostic criteria prescribed by the Japan Society for Equilibrium Research. The most common peripheral vestibular disorder was benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (32%), followed by Meniere's disease (12%). All peripheral vestibular disorders accounted for 65%. Central vestibular disorder accounted for 7%, of which space-occupying lesions in the posterior fossa accounted for 1.0% and cerebral infarction 1.9…

Prevalence of dizziness and vertigo in an urban elderly population.

The prevalence of balance symptoms (vertigo, dizziness, and dysequilibrium) was investigated in an epidemiological study of elderly people, the longitudinal and cross-sectional gerontological and geriatric population study from Göteborg, Sweden (H70). Three different age cohorts were studied, one at age 70, one at age 75 and one at ages 79, 82, 85, 88 and 90 years. Altogether 2011 participants answered the questionnaire at 3197 occasions. The overall prevalence of balance problems at age 70 was 36% (women) and 29% (men). Balance symptoms were more common among women than men, and increased wit…

A clinical taxonomy of dizziness and anxiety in the otoneurological setting.

Dizziness can be associated with otologic, neurologic, medical, and psychiatric conditions. This paper focuses on the interface between otologic and psychiatric conditions. Because dizziness often is situation specific, concepts of space and motion sensitivity (SMS), space and motion discomfort (SMD), and space and motion phobia (SMP) are needed to understand the interface. We present a framework involving several categories of interactions between balance and psychiatric disorders. The first category is that of dizziness caused by psychiatric disorder (psychiatric dizziness), including hyperv…

Dizziness and headache: a common association in children and adolescents.

Vertigo has long been recognized by the clinician as a frequent accompanying symptom of the adult migraine syndrome. This association has no … nal diagnosis. The most common justification for vestibular testing referral was the combination of dizziness and headache. Other less common reasons were "passing out" episodes, poor balance, and blurred vision. Normal test results were obtained from 70% of patients (n = 22). The most common abnormal test outcome was unilateral vestibular dysfunction (n = …

Stabilometry in balance assessment of dizzy and normal subjects.

Normal adults and patients referred to the Dizzy Clinic at the Medical College of Ohio had their standing balance assessed during combinations of normal and altered visual and somatosensory orientation conditions using a fixed-force platform to measure center-of-pressure translations. Significant differences were identified between normal subjects and dizzy patients, depending on the particular diagnostic category, the sensory condition tested, and the particular sway component being measured. Patients with central and peripheral vestibular dysfunctions had significantly greater sway than all
