OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of physical and psychological abuse of pregnant women in an Australian population.
DESIGN: All women attending the public prenatal clinic of the Royal Women's Hospital (Brisbane) between 23 November and 18 December 1992 were interviewed and asked to complete a self-report questionnaire on their history of abuse.
RESULTS: Of 1014 women eligible to enter the study, 301 (29.7%) reported a history of abuse. Fifty-nine (5.8%) had been abused during the pregnancy. The proportion of women admitting to abuse rose over the duration of pregnancy to 8.9% at 36 weeks.

The opportunistic character of deep-seated mycoses depends on granulocyte-based defense in candidosis and aspergillosis. Therefore, haematological, patients represent the group of highest risk. Infection with Pasteurella multocida can induce pyoendometritis, pyosalpingitis, and ovarian abscesses in rabbits. The likelihood of rabbits developing clinical pasteurellosis is predisposed by factors such as buildup of ammonia fumes, ambient temperature changes and drafts, reproduction, older age, existence of carriers, and poor sanitation. Traditionally, prevention of pasteurellosis in rabbits has focused on identifying suspected carriers and culling those animals from the rabbitry.

Fascioliasis (Fasciola hepatica infection) was diagnosed in a herd of domestic goats in Montana. Twenty-eight goats died after a month-long clinical course of anorexia, weight loss, depression, lethargy, and decreased milk production. Clinical laboratory findings included anemia, low hemoglobin content, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, eosinophilia, and high hepatic enzyme activity. The livers of affected goats had extensive parenchymal necrosis, fibrosis, and biliary hyperplasia. Results are presented of a serological examination of 1,547 domestic animals (cattle, pig, sheep, horse, goat, dog, cat) from 9 Tyrolian districts (Austria), performed in order to disclose the incidence of leptospirosis. Completely significant titres were domonstrated by means of the MAL test in the serotypes icterohaemorrhagiae or copenhageni, sorex-jalna, bratislava, sejroe and saxkoebing.
