Antibacterial activity of an acellular extract from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (AEP) was assessed in mice infected with bacteria including extracellular and intracellular bacteria. It was shown that AEP strongly increased resistance of mice to bacterial infections. The protective effect was maximal between days 2 and 5 after inoculation of AEP, and subcutaneous inoculation was most efficient. The lethal effects of Africanized honey bee venom depend on the absorption of venom delivered during simultaneous sting attacks by large numbers of bees. The hypothesis that antibodies to whole bee venom and bee venom components could neutralize the lethal effect of bee venom was tested. RATIONALE: Membranous glomerulonephritis (MN) is the leading cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults and is classified as primary or secondary. Secondary MN accounts for 20% to 30% of all MN cases and can arise from a number of conditions, including autoimmune diseases. We describe a case of severe dermatomyositis (DM) complicated by rhabdomyolysis, acute tubular necrosis, and hemophagocytosis. The case failed to respond to corticosteroids, but showed rapid and significant improvement after the addition of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). While the prognosis of DM is poor when it is complicated by rhabdomyolysis, the early administration of IVIG has the potential to be the cornerstone of its management.

The steps to produce, purify and control an immunogenic Brazilian conjugate vaccine against group C meningococcus (MenCPS-TT) using hydrazide-activated tetanus toxoid were developed. The conjugation methodology reduced the reaction time easily allowing scale-up.
