BACKGROUND: Small bowel bezoar obstruction (SBBO) is a rare clinical condition characterized by hard fecal masses in the small intestine, causing intestinal obstruction. It occurs more frequently in the elderly and bedridden patients, but can also affect those with specific gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Diagnosing SBBO is challenging due to its clinical presentation, which mimics other intestinal obstructions. While surgical intervention is the typical treatment for SBBO, advancements in endoscopic techniques have led to increased use of non-surgical methods, such as endoscopic lithotripsy.

Hookworm infections are widely prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in low income regions. In the body, hookworms parasit … ests or stool examinations as well as esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy or double-balloon enteroscopy. All of the patients lived in hookworm endemic areas and were not screened for hookworm infection using sensitive tests before the final diagnosis. The patients recovered after albendazole treatment, blood transfusion, and iron replacement, and none …

Until the end of the 20th century, push enteroscopy (PE) was the most commonly used method for the endoscopic investigation of the small bowel. However, PE has been almost completely replaced by double balloon enteroscopy (DBE). Undoubtedly the major endoscopic breakthrough of the last decade, DBE has contributed to the better diagnosis and understanding of diseases of the small bowel, opening-up this obscure part of the gastrointestinal tract to visualisation. Modern diagnostic and therapeutic DBE allows for a deeper and more thorough evaluation of the small bowel than PE, enabling the detect

An 80-year-old man was examined with esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy because of digestive tract hemorrhage;however, no specific cause was found. Small intestinal capsule endoscopy revealed a reddish elevated lesion in the ileum. This lesion was also detected using double-balloon endoscopy as a 5-cm reddish elevated lesion covered with normal villous architecture in the 95-cm part of the Bauhin valve on the oral side. The lesion was laparoscopically resected and diagnosed as inverted Meckel's diverticulum based on pathological examination. This was a rare case where Meckel's divertic

We present the youngest patient reported to date with chronic nonspecific multiple ulcers of the small intestine (CNSU) diagnosed by double-balloon endoscopy (DBE). A 3-year-old girl was referred to our department with a 2-year history of iron-deficiency anemia. Failure to thrive and hypoproteinemia were also noted, and stool occult blood tests had been persistently positive. However, the C-reactive protein level and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were not elevated. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and double-contrast enema revealed no abnormality in the colon and terminal ileum. Retrograde DBE was

The case of a postmenopausal woman with a congenital aortic stenosis is presented. She presented with severe iron deficiency anemia. After negative extensive gastrointestinal analysis, she was treated with octreotide for six months. After cessation of octreotide, anemia rapidly recurred. A second capsule endoscopy and a double balloon enteroscopy were performed, and an intestinal vascular malformation was found. After surgical segment resection, the patient had stable, normal levels of hemoglobin and no complaints after 14 months of follow-up.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Small bowel tumors (SBTs), either benign or malignant, are rare, accounting for 3-6% of all digestive neoplasms. Videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of patients with small bowel diseases, including SBTs. A novel method using the single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) has recently been developed. The aim of present study was to present our preliminary experience with SBE in patients with suspected SBTs on VCE examination.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients in whom VCE showed one or more lesions suggesting …

The development of bacterial endocarditis as a result of endoscopic interventions within the gastrointestinal tract is exceedingly rare. Antibiotic prophylaxis for endoscopic procedures is generally not warranted, except for certain high-risk patients. Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is a common endoscopic procedure for evaluation of the small bowel. Bacterial endocarditis secondary to DBE has not been previously described. We describe the first case of enterococcal endocarditis attributed to DBE in a patient with a history of stage 1 primary biliary cholangitis.

A 17-year-old boy, with a background of haemophilia A, presented to hospital with an episode of brisk and painless per rectal (PR) bleeding. Initial investigation with gastroscopy and colonoscopy revealed no source of bleeding. Examination of the small bowel including MRI, CT angiogram and capsule endoscopy revealed no abnormalities. Double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) from an antegrade position was attempted, with no abnormalities noted. The symptoms persisted and DBE was attempted again from a retrograde approach and a diverticulum was subsequently noted. Laparoscopic surgery was performed iden

An 18-year-old male experienced a first episode of Crohn's disease with inflammation of the colon, stenosis of small intestine and a fistula of the anal sphincter. After resection of the fistula and 30 cm of proximal ileum the patient remained free of symptoms under medication with azathioprine and mesalazine for 6 years. Then, blood in the stool occurred. Diagnostic work-up - gastroscopy and colonoscopy 2004 and 2006, magnetic resonance enteroclysis 2004 and 2006 and wireless capsule enteroscopy 2006 - revealed slight inflammation in the ileum but no bleeding source. The bleeding ceased, but

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) plays a critical role in evaluation and treatment of small bowel disorders, with double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) being the most widely used technique. Sedation strategies for enteroscopy remain a topic of debate, with conscious sedation (CS) and general anesthesia (GA) both being utilized. Our aim was to assess patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) for DAE, comparing CS and GA to determine their impact on patient satisfaction, procedure success, and pain perception.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: PREMs were prospectively collected fr…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Enteroscopy (wireless or wired) is the reference standard for small-bowel (SB) diseases, and it has been applied to detect SB malignancies in complicated celiac disease (CD) with heterogeneous results. The aim of this meta-analysis was to obtain a diagnostic yield (DY) by pooling the data of studies that investigated the use of enteroscopy to detect SB adverse events in CD.
METHODS: We performed an online search for studies estimating the DY of wireless and wired enteroscopy in predicting the presence of SB premalignant and/or malignant lesions. The DerSimonian and Laird
