Control of heart rate by carotid body chemoreceptors during diving in tufted ducks.

Previous work has shown that during forcible submersion of domestic ducks there is a gradual reduction in heart rate to 10-20% of its predive value after 45-60 s. Bilateral denervation of the carotid body chemoreceptors abolishes most of this bradycardia. By use of implanted radio transmitters it has been shown that in free-swimming tufted ducks, Aythya fuligula, there is an immediate reduction in heart rate, on spontaneous diving, from an elevated predive level. It then increases for a few seconds before it stabilizes at a level similar to that recorded when the duck is swimming fairly vigoro…

Pathological changes in chickens, ducks and turkeys fed high levels of rapeseed oil.

Rations containing 25% of either regular rapeseed oil (36% erucic acid), Oro rapeseed oil (1.9% erucic acid), soybean oil or a mixture of lard and corn oil were fed to chickens, ducks and turkeys. The regular rapeseed oil ration caused growth depression, increased feed conversion and anemia in all species. All the ducks and some of the chickens fed the regular rapeseed oil ration died. These dead birds were affected with hydropericardium and ascites. No deaths in the turkeys could be attributed to the regular rapeseed oil ration but some turkeys fed this ration had degenerative foci characteri…

Fatty acid composition and genetic associations in breast muscle of Kaijiang Sheldrake ducks.

1. Fatty acid (FA) composition determines the nutritional value of duck meat. Systematic characterisation of FA profiles in indigenous breeds, such as the certified Kaijiang Sheldrake, is essential for genetic improvement of meat quality.2. This study used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to comprehensively analyse the fatty acid composition in the breast muscle of 60 Kaijiang Sheldrake ducks and explored their potential genetic basis using genome-wide association analysis (GWAS).3. The GC-MS detected 51 FA, with saturated FA (SFA) accounting for the largest proportion (49.45%). Pa…

A transition toward flightlessness in Mallards, Indian Runner Ducks, and their hybrid offspring.

Many studies have explored wing function in volant birds, and how flight is gained over ontogeny and evolution. However, flight is often secondarily reduced or lost, and how birds transition from wing- to leg-dependence is unknown. Most losses occurred long ago, so stages of wing reduction have never been functionally evaluated or even observed. Here, we assess the anatomical changes and locomotor consequences of a transition toward flightlessness in a unique group: flying Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), flightless Indian Runner Ducks (Mallard-derivative), and their experimentally produced hybr…

Astragaloside IV mitigated cadmium-induced glandular gastric injury in ducks by inhibiting PANoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd), a nonessential heavy metal, threatens poultry health through environmental bioaccumulation; however, its adverse effects on the glandular stomach (GS), a critical digestive and immune organ in waterfowl, remain understood. The present study was designed to assess the gastroprotective potential of astragaloside IV (AS-IV), a naturally occurring triterpenoid saponin from Astragalus membranaceus with known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, against Cd-induced glandular gastric injury in ducks. METHODS: Ducks received long-term dietary AS-IV pretreatment prior…

Comparative pathology of ducks experimentally inoculated with three different recombinant Newcastle disease viruses.

Although velogenic Newcastle disease viruses (NDVs) generally show low pathogenicity in waterfowl such as ducks, lethal infection by NDVs has been reported sporadically. A previous study revealed that a serially-passaged NDV isolate showed increased virulence in ducks, and that the viral proteins harbored a total of 11 amino acid substitutions. Among them, the fusion protein (F), matrix protein (M), and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) were suspected to be involved in enhanced virulence. The present study aimed to clarify the association between genetic mutations in NDVs and pathogenicity in d…

Dietary resveratrol alleviates liver and intestinal injury in ducks under cage rearing system.

Cage rearing is a promising farming method. However, our previous studies have demonstrated that changes in farming practices induce oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver and duodenum of ducks. Resveratrol (RES), a natural plant polyphenol, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. This study evaluated the alleviating effects of RES against cage-rearing-induced duck health problems, emphasizing the involvement of redox imbalance, inflammatory response, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis, and PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK pathways. A total of 120 health…

PHB1 and PHB2 positively regulate IFN-β production by targeting MAVS in ducks.

PHB1 and PHB2, two subunits of the mitochondrial prohibitin complex, are critical regulators of antiviral innate immunity. Ducks, as natural reservoirs for RNA viruses, exhibit unique antiviral mechanisms. RIG-I is a key receptor for recognizing RNA viruses in ducks. However, the roles of PHB1 and PHB2 in the RIG-I-MAVS-IFN-β signaling pathway remain unclear. Here, we characterized the duPHB1 and PHB2 structure and functional domains, which contains similar N-terminal transmembrane domain, PHB domain and coil-coiled C-terminal domain, revealing high conservation with avian and mammalian orthol…

Molecular Characterization of Avulaviruses Isolated from Mallard Ducks in Moscow in 2008-2024.

Species of the orders Charadriiformes and Anseriformes serve as the primary long-distance disseminators of various avulaviruses. The most economically significant among them is Newcastle disease virus (NDV), or Avian orthoavulavirus 1 (AOAV-1), which causes diseases of varying severity in both domestic and wild birds. Other avulaviruses have been studied to a much lesser extent, and for most of them, only single isolates are known, which does not allow a comprehensive assessment of their potential threat. To evaluate the biological diversity and potential risks posed by avian paramyxoviruses s

Meat ducks as carriers of antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli harboring transferable R plasmids.

IMPORTANCE: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious public health threat. AMR bacteria and their resistance determinants in food can be transmitted to humans through the food chain and by direct contact and disseminate directly to the environment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the AMR characteristics and transferable R plasmids in Escherichia coli isolated from meat ducks raised in an open-house system. METHODS: One hundred seventy-seven (n = 177) commensal E. coli were examined for their antimicrobial susceptibilities and horizontal resistance transfer. The plasmids were examined by PC…

mtROS-mediated mitophagy is involved in aflatoxin-B1 induced liver injury in ducks.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is highly toxic to the liver and can cause excessive production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) in hepatocytes, leading to oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. The overproduction of mtROS can induce mitophagy, but whether mtROS and mitophagy are involved in the liver injury induced by AFB1 in ducks remains unclear. In this study, we first demonstrated that overproduction of mtROS and mitophagy occurred during liver injury induced by AFB1 exposure in ducks. Then, by inhibiting mtROS and mitophagy, we found that the dama…

Ileal Microbiota Alters the Immunity Statues to Affect Body Weight in Muscovy Ducks.

The ileum is mainly responsible for food absorption and nutrients transportation. The microbes in its intestinal lumen play an essential role in the growth and health of the host. However, it is still unknown how the ileal microbes affect the body weight of the host. In this study, we used Muscovy ducks as an animal model to investigate the relationship between the ileal microbes and body weight and further explore the potential mechanism. The ileum tissue and ileal contents of 200 Muscovy ducks were collected for mRNA extraction and real-time quantitative PCR, as well as DNA separation and 16…

Diversity and Reassortment Rate of Influenza A Viruses in Wild Ducks and Gulls.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) evolve via point mutations and reassortment of viral gene segments. The patterns of reassortment in different host species differ considerably. We investigated the genetic diversity of IAVs in wild ducks and compared it with the viral diversity in gulls. The complete genomes of 38 IAVs of H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, H3N6, H3N8, H4N6, H5N3, H6N2, H11N6, and H11N9 subtypes isolated from wild mallard ducks and gulls resting in a city pond in Moscow, Russia were sequenced. The analysis of phylogenetic trees showed that stable viral genotypes do not persist from year to year …
