Seasonal clustering of sinopulmonary mucormycosis in patients with hematologic malignancies at a large comprehensive cancer center.

BackgroundInvasive Mucorales infections (IMI) lead to significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. The role of season and climatic conditions in case clustering of IMI remain poorly understood.MethodsFollowing detection of a cluster of sinopulmonary IMIs in patients with hematologic malignancies, we reviewed center-based medical records of all patients with IMIs and other invasive fungal infections (IFIs) between January of 2012 and August of 2015 to assess for case clustering in relation to seasonality.ResultsA cluster of 7 patients were identified with sinopulmonary IMIs (

Latent profile analysis of fear of progression in Chinese hematologic malignancy survivors.

Fear of disease progression (FoP) is a multidimensional concept that refers to the fear or worry about disease progress. Little is known about the distinct FoP profiles and their determinants in culturally specific contexts, especially among hematologic malignancies (HM) patients in China. This study aimed to identify heterogeneous profiles of FoP and their associated predictors among Chinese patients with HM. A convenience sample of patients suffering from HM were enrolled from March 2023 to February 2024. To gather multidimensional data from the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (

Recommendations for the management of the haematological and onco-haematological aspects of Gaucher disease.

Current knowledge of the haematological and onco-haematological complications of type 1 Gaucher disease has been reviewed with the aim of identifying best clinical practice for treatment and disease management. It was concluded that: (i) Awareness of typical patterns of cytopenia can help clinicians distinguish haematological co-morbidities. (ii) Red blood cell studies and complete iron metabolism evaluation at baseline are recommended. (iii) Haemoglobin levels defining anaemia should be raised and used in Gaucher disease treatment and monitoring. (iv) Surgeons should be aware of potential ble

The roles of Cryptochrome-1: the circadian clock as a control point in cancer therapy.

In this review, we carefully describe the composition and operation of cryptochrome-1 (CRY1). We introduce four related signaling pathways, namely cAMP/PKA/CREB signaling way, HIFα signaling way, NF-κB signaling way, STAT3 signaling way, FOXO signaling pathway and Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway. We also emphasize the current understanding of the complex roles CRY1 plays in the progression of various solid tumors. We propose that its function represents a novel therapeutic target that could pave the way for new cancer treatments. Additionally, we summarize three emerging therapeutic strategies

ENPP1/CD203a-targeting heavy-chain antibody reveals cell-specific expression on human immune cells.

ENPP1/CD203a is a membrane-bound ectonucleotidase capable of hydrolyzing ATP, cGAMP and other substrates. Its enzymatic activity plays an important role in the balance of extracellular adenine nucleotides and the modulation of purinergic signaling, in soft tissue calcification, and in the regulation of the cGAS/STING pathway. However, a detailed analysis of ENPP1 surface expression on human immune cells has not been performed. Here, we selected VHH domains from human ENPP1-immunized alpacas to generate heavy-chain antibodies targeting ENPP1, and analyzed cell surface expression on all circulat

Adjuvant breast cancer treatments cardiotoxicity and modern methods of detection and prevention of cardiac complications.

The most common cancer diagnosis in female population is breast cancer, which affects every year about 2.0 million women worldwide. In recent years, significant progress has been made in oncological therapy, in systemic treatment, and in radiotherapy of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the improvement in the effectiveness of oncological treatment and prolonging patients' life span is associated with more frequent occurrence of organ complications, which are side effects of this treatment. Current recommendations suggest a periodic monitoring of the cardiovascular system in course of oncological t

Innovative therapeutic concepts of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is an opportunistic viral disease of the brain-caused by human polyomavirus 2. It affects patients whose immune system is compromised by a corresponding underlying disease or by drugs. Patients with an underlying lymphoproliferative disease have the worst prognosis with a mortality rate of up to 90%. Several therapeutic strategies have been proposed but failed to show any benefit so far. Therefore, the primary therapeutic strategy aims to reconstitute the impaired immune system to generate an effective endogenous antiviral response. Recently, an

Health inequalities in cancer care: a literature review of pathways to diagnosis in the United Kingdom.

This literature review discusses current health disparities in cancer care in the United Kingdom, spanning access to services, diagnosis, and outcomes. These inequities stem from a complex interplay of factors such as health literacy, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender, geography, and lifestyle choices. Health literacy plays a crucial role in timely healthcare seeking and diagnosis, while cultural beliefs significantly shape perceptions and behaviours. Socioeconomic barriers often result in delayed diagnosis and inferior outcomes due to limited access to preventive measures and high-

Targeting mutant p53 in cancer: from mechanistic insights to therapeutic strategies.

The tumor suppressor p53, often referred to as the “guardian of the genome,” is mutated in more than half of human cancers. These mutations have a significant impact on cancer biology and response to therapy. p53 mutations involve a range of changes that interfere with DNA binding, eliminate tumor suppressor functions, and, in many cases, confer dominant-negative or gain-of-function characteristics that actively promote oncogenesis. These mutations are closely linked to poor clinical outcomes and resistance to standard treatments. This review examines the impact of p53 mutations on cancer ther

Developments in Point-of-Care Diagnostic Technology for Cancer Detection.

Cancer is the cause of death for one in seven individuals worldwide. It is widely acknowledged that screening and early diagnosis are of vital importance for improving the likelihood of recovery. However, given the costly, time-consuming, and invasive nature of the many methods currently in use, patients often do not take advantage of the services available to them. Consequently, many researchers are exploring the possibility of developing fast, reliable, and non-invasive diagnostic tools that can be used directly or by local physicians at the point-of-care. Herein, we look at the use of estab

Yoda1 Enhanced Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Vibration on Osteocytes in Regulation of MDA-MB-231 Breast Cancer Cell Migration.

Low-magnitude (≤1 g) high-frequency (≥30 Hz) (LMHF) vibration has been shown to enhance bone mineral density. However, its regulation in breast cancer bone metastasis remains controversial for breast cancer patients and elder populations. Yoda1, an activator of the mechanosensitive Piezo1 channel, could potentially intensify the effect of LMHF vibration by enhancing the mechanoresponse of osteocytes, the major mechanosensory bone cells with high expression of Piezo1. In this study, we treated osteocytes with mono- (Yoda1 only or vibration only) or combined treatment (Yoda1 and LMHF vibration)
